~PASTOR’S NOTES~

Congratulations to all those involved in our first Vacation Bible Camp. Although small in number, we have laid the foundation for more families to participate in future years. Remember next Sunday, September 2, begins the new Mass schedule at both churches. There are posters in the church-es with the changes and we have also posted the new schedule in the bulletin. Basically, the changes are: No Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass at the Martyrs; the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses are combined into one Mass at 11:45 a.m. Reli-gious Ed. on Sundays will begin at 10:00 a.m. There will be no 7:30 a.m. Mass on Monday Mornings. So the Mass schedule is: St. Columbanus: Vigil Mass Saturday 6:00 p.m. Sunday Mass at 8:00, 11:45 a.m. & 3:00 p.m. (Latin) Weekday Masses: Monday: 9:00 a.m. Mass; Tuesday thru Friday: 7:30 & 9:00 a.m.; Saturday 8:30 a.m. Martyrs Church: Vigil Mass Saturday 5:00 p.m., Sunday Mass at 11:00 a.m. The reality of our need to reduce Mass occurred last Sunday when Msgr. Keenan was taken to the hospital. We were left with two priests to say 8 Masses. School also begins next week. It’s not too late to sign up for St. Columbanus for a faith filled education. I’m sure everyone has heard of and are following the clergy abuse scandal. Despite the revelation by the Pennsylvania Grand Jury, many in the church hierarchy refuse to acknowledge the fact that the problem stems from active homosexual activity. The Vatican has always forbidden the ordination of homosexuals but this discipline has gone unheeded. As Bishop Morlino from Madison, Wisconsin wrote to the people of his diocese,

“It is time to admit that there is a homo-sexual subculture within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the vineyard of the Lord. The Church’s teaching is clear that the ho-mosexual inclination is not in itself sinful, but it is intrinsically disordered in a way that renders any man stably afflicted by it unfit to be a priest.” The scandal should open peoples’ eyes to the fact that homosexual acts are disor-dered, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches. Yet a majority of Catholics think that homosexuals should be allowed to “marry."

Lot and his Family leaving Sodom (Peter Paul Rubens 1625) Again, it is a disorder that is harmful to all involved and in no way can be equated to the marriage relationship between a man and a woman. No one living the homosexual lifestyle really is happy with it. Many with this disorder are trying to lead chaste lives as all people are called to do whatever their state of life. As I wrote a few weeks ago, Pope Paul VI predicted the harmful effects of artificial contraception. The abuse scandal is symptomatic of the rejection of the natural law instilled in us by God. Will Catholics and the world finally admit to this divine truth or will the denial of Paul VI’s teaching continue? All Catholics need to examine their consciences and seek the source of the fullness of truth who is Jesus Christ. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
