~PASTOR’S NOTES~

We are still in need of teachers for our Religious Education (CCD) program on Saturday and Sunday morning and Monday evening. It is important that our children be formed in the faith. Classes are held once a week

and all materials and instructions will be provided. Couples can team teach and learn together as they instruct children in the faith. College students can earn service hours for passing on the faith. I taught religious ed. before I went into the seminary and while I was in the seminary. Because of my schedule and cur-rent bout with cancer I cannot teach regularly but I still visit both Rel. Ed. and St. Columbanus School classes. At the end of Mass we are commissioned to go forth to spread the Gospel. God will give the graces needed to accomplish any-thing. Contact Mrs. Arroyo and offer to teach a class. It is a way to both pass on and deepen our own knowledge of the true faith of Jesus Christ necessary to save our souls. The clean-up portion of Dillon Hall is completed. However, no one can go downstairs until all the work of retiling, waxing and re-carpeting the floors is completed. This work should be done in another couple of weeks.

St. Robert Bellarmine, Patron Saint of Catechists

I wish to thank everyone for adjusting to the new Mass schedule. Since we have fewer Masses, it is nice to see more people at the Masses that we do have. I hope it will foster parish unity in our worship. Occasionally someone will ask about why I say Mass facing the tabernacle and crucifix. Before starting to say Mass ad orientem I wrote several columns on it. So I will cite two quotes from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (then Cardinal Ratzinger) from his book The Spirit of the Liturgy, “Despite all the variations in practice that have taken place far into the second millenium, one thing has remained clear for the whole of Christendom: praying toward the east is a tradition that goes back to the beginning. (pg. 75) The turning of the priest toward the people has turned the community into a self-enclosed circle. In its outward form, it no longer opens out on what lies ahead and above, but is closed in on itself. The common turning to-ward the east was not a "celebration toward the wall"; it did not mean that the priest "had his back to the peo-ple": the priest himself was not regarded as so important. For just as the congregation in the synagogue looked together toward Jerusalem, so in the Christian liturgy the congregation looked together "toward the Lord".... They did not close themselves into a circle; they did not gaze at one another; but as the pilgrim People of God they set off for the Oriens, for the Christ who comes to meet us.... [A]common turning to the east during the Eucharistic Prayer remains essential. This is not a case of something accidental, but of what is essential. Look-ing at the priest has no importance. What matters is looking together at the Lord.” (pp. 80-81) Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, made the following comments during the keynote opening address of the Sacra Liturgia conference in London from July 5 to 8, 2016. “It is legitimate and conforms to the letter and the spirit of the Council. In my capacity as the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, I continue to remind all that the cele-bration toward the East (versus orientem) is authorized by the rubrics of the missal, which specify the mo-ments when the celebrant must turn toward the people. A particular authorization is, therefore, not needed to celebrate Mass facing the Lord. Thus, in an article published by L’Osservatore Romano June 12, 2015, I pro-posed that the priests and the faithful turn toward the East at least during the Penitential Rite, during the sing-ing of the Gloria, during the Propers and during the Eucharistic Prayer.” In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
