APRIL NEWSLETTER - ST. GREGORY CHURCH AND SCHOOL

I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and peace.

The big financial event this month is our annual festival which will be on Sunday, April 17th from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. All the proceeds of this event will go towards our school to help with expenses. Please note, on this day, there will only be an 8:00 am and 10:00 am Mass. There will be no 12:00 noon

Mass. I am asking everyone to please support this event by inviting family and friends to come and enjoy the great food, rides, and festivities. Like most Catholic festivals, we will also be having a raffle of fabulous prizes, so please buy some tickets --- you just might be one of the lucky winners. There will also be a live and silent auction in the gym. Last year the school worked almost the entire event and this year I am asking more parish individuals and organizations to get involved. I am very grateful to our Holy Name Society who volunteered to be in charge of the turkey leg booth. They will take care of everything involved with this booth. If you would like to volunteer your time please contact the school office and they will get you in touch with someone who can help you. The more workers we have the better it is for all of us. It bothers me when I hear people say they are not going to attend or support the festival because it is a school event and they do not have any relatives attending the school. I think this “us” and “them” mentality is a dangerous attitude to have. We need each other. We are not a separate school community and separate church community, we are one community. We cannot afford to work for our own needs and not be concerned about the needs of the other. We ALL belong to the St. Gregory the Great family and we all need to do what we can to help and support each other. I want us to think this way and do whatever we can to bring this concept to fruition. My hope is to see a greater cooperation amongst everyone in future fiestas. By working together as one community there is a lot we can accomplish for the good of all.

As I have said before, I am very proud of our school. We are currently taking registrations for next year so please tell everyone you know with grade school age children to consider sending their kids to our school. I know it is a sacrifice to send children to a Catholic School but take it from me, a person who has received a Catholic School education from grade school to college, it is well worth it. Our school principal, Mr. Martinez, and I have goals for our school and we are asking your assistance in helping us achieve them. We want our school to be one of the best, if not the best grade school, in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. In order to do this it must continue to maintain its high academic standards along with its Catholic Identity in a family-friendly environment where students feel loved and are respectful to one another. We must do all we can to ensure our pupils reach their God-given potential and are ready to serve the community through acts of service as commanded by our Lord. This vision calls for us to upgrade our campus, from time to time through improvements to our programs and facilities. Together we have already accomplished a lot, but more is still needed. This kind of talk may sound ambitious, but I feel it is attainable. I am sharing this with you because I need your support to make it happen. I am respectfully asking you to support our school in whatever way you can. One easy way to do this is to pray for the administration, teachers, and students and support its fundraisers. We need the school and it needs us. I feel these goals can be easily achieved if we work together as one parish family. If you want more information on our school or how you can help it fulfill its mission please call the school office at 210-342-0281. You will not be disappointed!

During the month of March we had many blessings. The completion of the first phase of our church renovations is definitely one we will remember and enjoy for many years to come. I am sure you will agree with me that these renovations really had a positive effect on the environment of our church. Everyone has been commenting on how beautiful the Stations of the Cross, statues, and tabernacle are. It is hard to believe they are the same ones we had before. The total cost for these renovations was $75,250.00. The total amount of donations was $38,506.00, parishioners $21,559.00, altar society $11,375.00, Fr. Rudy’s birthday money $5,360.00, and school children $500.00, which left the final cost to the church at 36,456.00. The Holy Name Society and ACTS Core also wanted to make a donation but since we already had a substantial amount of money committed, I asked them if they could do something else that would benefit the church. They agreed to this and the ACTS Core donated $2,500.00 towards phase two of our church renovations which will be the painting of the interior of the church and upgrading the lights. The Holy Name Society said they would contribute towards the repair of the sinking pavers at the front entrance of the church. This work started on March 17th and completed on March 19th. I am so grateful to Mr. Slavin for helping me find a contractor to do this work. The workers did an outstanding job and I know we will not have to worry about the pavers sinking again. Another blessing we had last month was the parish penitential service on March 4th and the Holy Week services. The parish penitential service was well attended. It made me happy to see so many people avail themselves of this sacrament. Continued next page.

Holy Week was a special time for me. At times I was very tired but it was a good feeling. It is special times like this that make me grateful I am a priest. I am sorry I was not able to schedule a parish mission this Lent. I do have one set for next year, which will be March 11 – 14, 2017 with Fr. Pat Martin.

There have been many good things happening in our community lately. Our CYO board has been working very hard and has made a lot of improvements which have made a positive effect on our parish property. The number of kids wanting to play in the program and the number of adults wanting to help out have increased. New equipment has been purchased that will enable them to keep our property in great shape. The Holy Name and Altar Society continue to attract new members, and our ministry to the Spanish speaking continues to grow. This time two years ago I had asked you to please consider increasing your financial contributions to the church. At that time our finances were not good. Your response has been great and our finances have continued to grow. I am very grateful to you for your generous support to our church. Please keep it up. Thank you to the Lozano family for cleaning the church the month of March.

In closing, I just want to thank you for your kindness to me and support of our parish. As mentioned in other newsletters, our community will always be facing some sort of challenge from time to time. We do not live in a vacuum. When something unfortunate happens in our country, state, or city it is just a matter of time before we feel its effects. Challenges are part of life, and we all have them. If we face them together as one united community, then they are not overwhelming. If we think we don’t need one another and can do it all by ourselves, then we are in serious trouble. We may from time to time have trials in our life but God is so good and will always help us make it through the tough times. Let us resolve to be faithful to our Catholic beliefs and to each other. Let us look at one another as family and be ready to help one another. We are a diverse community, something to be embraced and celebrated. Please know you can always count on me to be honest with you even when the news is not good. I take seriously my position as Pastor of St. Gregory Church and School. If there is anything you want to ask me or need something clarified please feel to see me. If I am available, I will be happy to discuss any concern you may have. This is one way I can be accountable and transparent to you and our community.

May the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph watch over all of us and keep us in their care. Remember, God loves you and so do I. Father Rudy T. Carrola, Jr., Pastor, St. Gregory the Great Church and School

Second Sunday of Easter. John 20:19-23. In today’s Gospel, we hear that after the resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and offered them the gift of his peace.

What do you think Jesus is telling us about believing without seeing?

A prayer to share with your children: Lord Jesus, just as you shared your peace with us, help us to share it with each other; so that our world may be filled with love and friendship. Amen.

Welcome to the community of faith!!!

All who were baptized are now called neophytes in this last period of the journey of faith, until the anniversary of their initiation next Easter. The final period of regular weekly formation extends through the Easter season. This post-baptismal catechesis is called mystagogy.

Mystagogy is a time for deepening the Christian experience, especially in appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life and unity of the Catholic community. The neophytes now share with Christ, and his Body in the parish community, the intimate communion of the Eucharist. Now they have access to all the means of sanctification. We as a parish community pledge to help them grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop a genuine Catholic world view.

Let us all as the St. Gregory the Great community share their joy that they be strengthened by our prayers for their new life in Christ.
