This weekend I have a chance to taste some of the home baked goodies made by our parishioners. Thank you very much to our Women’s Club for sweetening our fall days for us! I hope all of you will have a chance to stop by our Social Hall to buy some cakes and cookies and in the process support our Women’s Club. I am excited to announce to you that we will host Late Nite Catechism here at St. John’s on January 21st at 6 PM. The Fellowship Committee is preparing this fun night filled with food, drinks and laughter. Even though the event will take place in a couple of months, I am letting you know so you may mark your calendars and let your families and friends know about it. More details will follow in the upcoming

bulletins. Next month Pope Francis will conclude The Year of Mercy by closing The Holy Doors of St. Peter Basilica in Rome. The Archdiocese of Chicago has partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago to create a tour that explores art works featuring themes of compassion and forgiveness. I invite you to join me on November 5th at 10 AM. We will take the Metra Train from Homewood to The Art Insti-tute and after viewing the exhibit and lunch we will make our way home. Please call the parish office if you are interested and to receive more details. In less than two weeks we will celebrate All Saint’s and All Soul’s Days. These celebrations call to our mind those who have gone before us. This weekend we welcome Catholic Cemeteries with their presentation to our parish. Next weekend is the 5th Sunday of the month. Our Knights of Columbus will lead us in praying the rosary after the 8 AM Mass. If the weather permits the rosary will be prayed by Mary’s Grotto. With prayers, Fr. Karol

All Souls’ Day Celebration

On Wednesday, November 2nd, the church celebrates the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. There will be 7:00 p.m. Mass in our church in memory of our faithful departed. The memo-rial service will take place immediately following the homily of the Mass. At that time, the names of parishioners and those buried from St. John Church since November 1, 2015 will be read. Upon your arrival for Mass on All Souls Day you will receive a candle having the name of your deceased loved one. As the name of your loved one is read during the memorial service, you and your family will bring the candle up to the front to be lit, and placed in front of the altar. If you would also like to have a photo of your loved one placed in the sacred space during November, you may bring the photo ahead of time to our office. Please be sure to put the name on the back. You may also bring the photo as you come to the service on November 2nd. We invite you, your family, and anyone who wishes, to please join us in praying for and remembering our deceased loved ones. While we no longer experience their physical presence with us, our faith tells us we will one day be reunited. Life has changed for them, their earthly journey is completed, and they are at peace. In communion with them, we journey forward in faith. For any questions, clarifications, or concerns, please call Church Office: 708-758-5098

ARE YOU READY FOR BUBBA???

Leaves are turning gorgeous colors, children are back in school, pumpkins are starting to appear slowly and the days and nights are getting cooler. This means that somewhere “BUBBA” is getting ready to break out of hiding and make his appearance in Saint John’s vestibule. He is looking for his feathers, so once again it is time to get ready for turkey shoot season and to “feather that bird.” BUBBA is hoping to earn all 15 of his feathers, each valued at $1,000, for a plume of $15.000. In his lifetime, BUBBA, has never reached his goal. His fervent hope is to become fully feathered this season. Please do whatever you can to help him reach his goal. Prizes will remain the same. First prize is $1,000, Second prize is $500, Third prize is $250, and there are 5 prizes of $100 each. Winning tickets will be drawn, in the Social Hall, Sunday, November 20th after 10:00 Mass. Tickets are still a great bargain, $10 each or 3 for $25. Since this is our only Parish wide fundraiser, each family is asked to buy or sell $50 worth of tickets, if their circumstances permit. This is an ideal time to approach all the people whose causes you support throughout the year. Additional tickets can be obtained from the Parish Office. Thank you for your consistent support of your Parish. Tickets will be mailed out shortly. In the past, we have had some parishioners who did not receive their tickets. If you do not receive your tickets by October 31st, please contact Eileen or Karen at the Parish Office. They are available Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If you don’t get answer they are assisting other parishioners.

YEAR OF MERCY INSPIRED TOUR

AT THE ART INSTITUTE

The Archdiocese of Chicago is very pleased to invite you to participate in the Year of Mercy Art Tour created in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago. The tour will run from October through December 2016.

This tour includes seven works of art which will pull you through the Art Institute and two millennia. These works reflect the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy – those acts of compassion we offer to help our neighbors with their spiritual and emotional needs. It is our hope that these beautiful works of art will allow those who attend to encounter the living Christ and experience God’s mercy. www.jubileemercy.org

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Imagine the frustration of bishops who work strenuously over their ad limina reports, directing study committees, assembling data, honing the texts, traveling to Rome “to the threshold,” only to have it all collapse into a fifteen-minute group meeting with the pope. More than a few have grumbled at the weight of this “treasure” from our tradition, yet from the pope’s vantage point, they are essential to his ministry. Pope John Paul II recalled his own experience as the Bishop of Kraków, visiting with Pope Paul VI in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The memory of those individual visits caused him to strengthen the for-mat, assuring each of the world’s 2,744 bishops a privileged fifteen private minutes with the pope every five years. If you wonder what the pope does all day, the thought of dealing with five hundred bishops a year and reading their detailed reports on diocesan life should help fill up the calendar. Pope John Paul II used to say that he approached each individual meeting with the personal goal of learning something new about the Church, and his lively interest made the visits immensely worthwhile. The content of the private meetings remains under a privilege of secrecy, or as Cardinal Theodore McCarrick once said, “You’re only supposed to quote the pope if he tells a joke.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co
