ATTENTION PLEASE - GARBABE DISPOSAL St. John’s has been having a problem with our (very
appreciated) volunteer help disposing of garbage into the
wrong dumpster. Please take note when taking out
garbage/recyclables that regular garbage should be
thrown into the larger dumpster and
recyclables into the smaller
dumpster which is marked for recyclables.
Thank you always for your help.
Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds
At one "me or another, we’ve all
dreamed of a perfect world. Imagine a country
where everyone is employed, a government
full of honest poli"cians, a Church whose
members are all saints. While imagining
about such things is natural; expec"ng or demanding such
things is dangerous. Why? Because unrealis"c expecta"ons
can easily lead to discouragement, despair, even cynicism.
And that would be bad enough. The expecta"on that the
Church is only for the holy, has led people to embark on some
very misguided projects throughout history.
Jesus Himself was cri"cized by the Pharisees for
dining with the unclean and He accepted tax collectors and
sinners as His disciples. He knew the flaws in Peter and the
other Apostles including Judas, but He called them anyway to
give them the opportunity to make a choice to do good. And
just in case His own ac"ons weren’t enough to get His point
across, He told His followers today's Gospel of the parable of
the wheat and the weeds.
All this is not to say that Jesus was so# on sin. He
commanded the adulteress to go and sin no more and He
corrected the apostles numerous "mes for their lack of faith
and their poor choices. But He did not reject them even a#er
their numerous failures and even betrayals. He had come for
the sick, the weak and those who needed conversions in their
life.
His Church was to be a hospital for sinners and not
just a club for saints. Of course, a hospital exists not to keep
people sick, but to help people get well and whole. If pa"ents
want to be admi$ed, they must be willing to accept
treatment, at "mes even occasionally difficult and painful
treatment.
And the Church similar to a good hospital is required
by charity, which is true love, to point out to a person when
they are living in serious sin, not to do so would be a lack of
charity. Which doctor would you want, one that says "you
have cancer and this is what we need to do to help you get
be#er" or a doctor who lies and tells you: "you're healthy and
all is good!”
Everyone here has heard the phrase "tough love."
Genuinely concerned parents refusing to financially support
their drug/alcohol addicted child, un"l he or she enters a
drug/alcohol rehabilita"on center are prac"cing tough love,
because they want the best for their children.
While there will be "mes for each one of us to
prac"ce "spiritual tough love" towards others, our main
responsibility will be how to uproot the evil within our own
hearts. If we are always worrying about how to separate the
weeds from the wheat in the Church, we may find ourselves
neglec"ng our own improvement, a task, if we are honest,
that will keep most of us quite busy!

AIR CONDITIONING
The subject of installing air condi"oning into St. John’s
church was brought up at the July 11th Finance Council
mee"ng. The council is asking for some feedback from St.
John’s parishioners as to whether or not this idea should be
explored further and if parishioners will be agreeable to
fund this project. An es"mate of approximately $40,000 to
cover the cost of air condi"oning installa"on has been
acquired. If anyone has sugges"ons/opinions and will be
willing to donate toward the cost, please contact one of the
council members, Fr. Tom or the rectory.
