  • The Birthday of our Church

Today is the Solemnity of Pentecost; the

Birthday of the Church, the Day our Lord fulfills

His promise to send upon the whole Church His

gi' of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost has a number

of symbols a"ached to it, lets look at just two of

them; wind and flame. In the Acts of the Apostles we read,

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong

driving wind, and it filled the en"re house.” And in the Acts of

Apostles also we read, “And there appeared to them tongues as

it were of fire, which parted and it came to rest on each one of

them.” When we celebrate the birthday of someone we

normally present a birthday cake with lit candles on it for the

birthday person to blow out. Flames and wind are always part

of this simply but loving family tradi#on.

Fire is a wonderful symbol of the work of the Holy

Spirit. The Spirit is like a fire in at least three ways: He brings

God’s presence, God’s passion, and God’s purity. The Holy Spirit

is the presence of God as He indwells the heart of the believer.

In the Old Testament, God showed His presence to the Israelites

by covering the tabernacle with fire. This fiery presence

provided light and guidance. In the New Testament, God gives

light and guidance to His adopted children by covering the

tabernacle of their bodies with the same fiery presence of the

Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit creates the passion of God in our

hearts. A'er the two disciples traveling to Emmaus talk with the

resurrected Jesus, they describe their hearts as “burning within

us”. A'er the apostles receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, they

have a passion which impels them to speak the word of God

boldly. The Holy Spirit produces the purity of God in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is the agent of our sanc#fica#on. As fire purges

the dross from precious metal, so the Holy Spirit removes our

    sins to refine us.

Wind or breath is also a wonderful symbol of the work

of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit breathes into our hearts and

minds. As a ship is moved through the water by wind in its sails,

so we can be moved along in our life by the Spirit’s impulse.

This sacred breath of the Holy Spirit directs, guides, comforts,

and influences us as it imparts newness of life. The song

Breathe on me, Breath of God sums the workings of the Holy

Spirit under this symbol of wind or breath: Breathe on me,

Breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love the way

you love, and do what you would do. Breathe on me, Breath of

God, un"l my heart is pure, un"l my will is one with yours, to do

and to endure. Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never

die, but live with you the perfect life for all eternity.

On our birthdays we use our breath to blow out the

flames so as to enjoy the cake. On the birthday of the Church,

our Lord sends out His Holy Breath, to ignite the flames within

the hearts of His disciples, so they may enjoy His life dwelling

within them. Happy Birthday to all the members of the Church!
