Dear Parish Family, The Easter is celebrated for seven days and Easter season stretches from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, making up what is known as “The Great 50 Days.” This is a season in

which the Church rejoices in and with the resurrected Christ. It is cer-tainly the most festive season of the year as the Church proclaims the Easter Alleluia. Spring flowers adorn the church and the baptismal font and the paschal candle is prominently displayed. The lighting of the paschal candle, which took place at the Easter Vigil Mass, is a remind-er of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is lit at every Sunday Mass throughout Easter. It stands as a sentry; one light of hope in a world that is still filled with despair and sin. The readings of the season are from the Acts of the Apostles in which the Church is reminded of its earliest days and called to recommit to the same faith even in the face of trial and persecution. Faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is much more than simply be-lieving in an amazing fact. Each of this Sunday's readings reminds us that belief in Jesus' resurrection is accepting and participating in a rela-tionship that can enliven every part of our lives—now and forever. The disciples were locked in we are told as they were in fear. There was a lack of peace; perhaps there was confusion, pain, and division. It is into that unsettled disquiet that Jesus came through the closed doors. Even then the Apostles were not able to experience fully the joy of his presence without entering the mystery of his wounds. Once they saw his hands and side, the remnants of pain and sorrow, they could re-joice. The experience of faith is not the absence of pain or sorrow or loss. It is, rather, the bearing of pain or sorrow in faith. Faith does not take away the wounds; it transforms them. In faith, flaws are not obliterat-ed; they are refined and purified. Excepting Thomas the other disciples had a first-hand experience of the risen Jesus. But when Thomas re-joins them after Jesus has vanished, he is highly skeptical. A week later, Jesus appears to all eleven of them and invites Thomas to make good on his skeptical challenge: Put your finger in my wounds and believe, Jesus tells him. St. Augustine thinks that, without touching Jesus, Thomas believes. The Gospel does not say that Thomas did touch Jesus, Augustine says; and Jesus says that Thomas saw and be-lieved, not that Thomas touched and believed. But, of course, this is just what the other ten apostles did in the first appearance of Christ, when Thomas was absent: They saw and believed. “I’ll not believe” without entering the wounds. How right he is! Faith must be found as much in the wounds of life as in the glories. And from the wounds a faith might most amazingly emerge. “My Lord and my God,” that skeptic is reported to have said. There is a subtext to Jesus’ comment that while Thomas became a be-liever in the seeing, those who do not have the joy of seeing offer something far more splendid in their act of sightless faith. We are told that Jesus did other signs. The ones scripture records are meant to help us believe that Jesus is the Messiah. That belief, that faith, is finally felt and expressed not in sheer joy alone, but in arduous trial, in the plague of worry or doubt, in the grip of fear. Our faith at times might take a hit or two in the face of illness and pain, death of a loved one or the betrayal of another. The deep knowledge of the divine presence at these trying times brings with it a faith that assures us in the voice of Christ, ‘I have conquered the world!’

To all who received Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. May you continue to grow in faith and be blessed with God’s grace and Spirit.
