Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,

Today is the Commemoration of All Souls. While our annual Mass of Remembrance at 10:30am specifically recalls those who have had a funeral through our parish auspices during the past year, all the Masses dispose us to remember all those of our families and friends who have died. By our prayers, may we assist them in their journey to heaven, from where they then will assist us with their prayers and intercession with God. We also remind you of the Community Health Fair in Conlon Hall today from 10am to 4pm. Please feel free to stop by to take advantage of what will be offered. A Benefit Concert for the Ongoing Recovery efforts for the Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines will be presented in the Main Church on Sunday, November 16th at 4pm, featuring the Accordion Pops Orchestra, led by Al Terzo, Conductor. This is an experience not to be missed! Advance Tickets at $10 each may be purchased from members of the Filipino Apostolate outside church this weekend and next weekend. If you cannot attend the concert but wish to make a donation, please leave it with one of the ticket sellers. If you notice our ushers slowly walking up and down the side aisles during the month of November during homily time, they are not checking to see if you are awake or asleep! They are conducting the semi-annual Mass Count required by the Archdiocese. This week, I will be away on retreat, directed by Archbishop Hebda, so I ask your prayers and I assure you of mine.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

On the one hand, death seems to be a natural part of life. Every living organism that we know of undergoes death. It seems to be built into biological life. At the same time, we human beings reel against death as something profoundly unnatural; we seem to have a deep-seated sense that death violates a profound truth about the meaning of our existence. It is a power that oppresses us; a “veil that veils all people.” And yet we also believe that it is for us a necessary part of the journey toward eternal life; the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago, facing terminal cancer, spoke of the need to see death as a “friend.” Perhaps the key to reconciling all our conflicting feelings regarding death is our faith that God and God’s love are stronger than death. According to St. Paul, God will raise the dead in the same way that God created everything from nothing: “with a word of command.” It is our faith that the God who promises a reward that is great in heaven is powerful enough to bring that about. And yet, despite our faith, we still mourn those who have died. Perhaps this is only natural, since they have passed from our sight and we no longer relate to them as we once did. Jesus does not tell mourners to stop mourning immediately; rather, he promises that they shall one day be comforted. Yet while we mourn, we do not mourn as those without hope. On this day we celebrate the fact that we are still united with the dead within the embrace of God’s love.

“God of life, all peoples are in your hands. Hold gently those who have died, and bring them to the perfection of your kingdom, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love,

because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.” - Wisdom of Solomon 3: 9

Here’s the ironic thing about people who are generous. Those that give freely and cheerfully do not do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their love for God and their neighbors. Yet, because of their generosity, they typically are given more than they gave away!
