Reflection on Today’s Readings

The disciple of Christ is called to witness to the new life in Christ – to testify, both by word and example, that Jesus has overcome sin and inaugurated the kingdom of God. As He explained this calling, Jesus also warned His disciples that the new life they were to manifest was radically different from life apart from God. The division Jesus spoke of occurs as the light in us becomes brighter, and the darkness around us and within us is more fully exposed.

If we want the light of Christ to shine, the darkness must give way—and this can sometimes be painful. Nevertheless, it is the calling of a disciple to maintain his or her allegiance to the Lord, and to let Christ’s word, like a two-edged sword, separate darkness from light. At the same time, Jesus never leaves His disciples without the consolation of His love. They are comforted by knowing that as they share in His cross, they also share in His resurrection—both now and at the end of the ages.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor who was imprisoned and put to death by the Nazi regime in Germany because he opposed its policies, put it this way:

“The final decision must be made while we are still on earth. The peace of Jesus is the cross. But the cross is the sword God wields on earth. It creates division. The son against the father, the daughter against the mother, the member of the house against the head—all this will happen in the name of God’s kingdom and His peace. That is the work which Christ performs on earth.

“God’s love is altogether different from the love of men for their own flesh and blood. God’s love for man means the cross and the way of discipleship. But that cross and that way are both life and resurrection. ‘He that loves his life for My sake will find it.’ In this promise we hear the voice of Him who holds the keys to death, the Son of God, who goes to the cross and the resurrection, and with Him takes His own.” (The Cost of Discipleship, 25)

But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness.” “Comfort” puts me first. “Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why settle for comfort when you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, ask Jesus for guidance on using your gifts and live the life God intended for you!

Invitation to Validate a Civil Marriage If you were married civilly, that is not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage in the eyes of the Church. Some couples believe that a marriage before a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with 2 witnesses.
