Parish Mission Statement:St. Josaphat Catholic Parish, with faith in a loving God, joyfully welcomes all who wish to come together as a community of shared faith in Jesus Christ, to give glory and praise to God.

We commit to making Christ’s love apparent on our journey of faith by striving to support, comfort, forgive, challenge and inspire each other in our homes, schools, neighborhoods, community and world.

We are energized through the celebration of the sacraments and the proclamation of the Gospel. Through our ongoing formation and education, outreach to those in need and hospitality to all,

we come to know Christ and make Christ known.

The Philippines Need YOUJust a few days ago, a storm of tremendous size and impact, Typhoon Haiyan, has passed over the Philippines, killing nearly 10,000 of our Filipino brothers and sisters and with more than 600,000 displaced. Unfortunately, the region is barely recovering from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake just three weeks ago and there is a shortage of supplies.Typhoon Haiyan is the equivalent to a category 5 hurricane and the impact from the storm has left the Philippines and nearby islands with no water, shelter, or electricity. Catholic Relief Services will prioritize emergency shelter, water and sanitation, household relief items (blankets, kitchen items, cookware), potable water, and toilets in this time of emergency. Catholic Relief Services is working with the local government, Caritas and local parishes to maximize response and recovery efforts to reach those most affected by this destructive storm. To support CRS respond to this emergency in the Philippines, your donation can be sent to: ATTN: Typhoon Haiyan Philippines Emergency Appeal Catholic Relief Services, 3525 S. Lake Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60653

This weekend we welcome two different guests who will speak to us about their own experience with gun violence here in Chicago. In the bulletin this weekend is a four-page supplement from our Point Blank committee about gun violence, which includes some steps each of us could take to help address this epidemic in our city and nation. Please welcome Julian, a young man touched by gun violence, at the Saturday 5:00 and Sunday 10:00 and 12:00 masses, and Jose Gonzalez, involved in a movie project on gun violence, who will be speaking at the Sunday 8:00 mass.

Next weekend’s second collection is for the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This outreach from the Catholic church here in the United States helps millions of people help themselves ending poverty, unemployment and homelessness and helps people work for justice in our communities. Please be generous for this very important work.

The Giving Tree is coming! Next weekend the Giving Tree will be in the back of church, loaded with its special ornaments listing gifts being sought by some of our less fortunate brothers and sisters this holiday season. Please consider taking an ornament and purchasing the gift or gifts described to bring some happiness to others this Christmas. Complete details will be in the bulletin, and available at the back of church next weekend. All gifts are due back no later than Noon on Saturday, December 14th.

This past Tuesday a team of educators from the State of Illinois came to our parish school for their every-five-years visit for state recognition. I am happy to report that we received

the state recognition and they were very complimentary of the entire school. Our success can be attributed to our wonderful faculty, administration and staff, engaged parents and a wonderful student body! Congratulations to everyone who continues to make St. Josaphat School such a beacon of excellence in education and faith formation!

Thanksgiving is only 11 days away! Please be sure to mark your calendars to join us for our annual Thanksgiving Mass at 10:00 am. When we gather to thank God for our many blessings throughout the year, we also honor some of the outstanding parishioners who model Christian service in their generous donations in time and talent as we present them with our St. Josaphat Parish Service Awards.

The Facilities Committee is meeting Thursday to review a number of projects and concerns in our parish facilities. As I mentioned earlier, while I am away on sabbatical we are planning on renovating part of the 2nd floor in the rectory to put a kitchen and breakfast room there so that we can turn the rectory Dining Room and kitchen over for general parish use. This will allow us to separate the living space and the office space in the rectory, but even more importantly, it will create a new meeting space to help take up the slack when the lower level of the Parish Hall becomes two classrooms this summer in preparation for the new school year.

Next weekend is the Feast of Christ the King, which brings to a glorious end another year in the liturgical calendar. Our readings today anticipate that end, foretelling the end of all things. We might call this, “Chicken Little Sunday,” for it is all about what many perceive as the end of the world.

But the readings from scripture which speak of the end times are never anywhere near as concerned with the actual end of the world as those who spend a lot of time frightening people with the idea seem to imply. It is much more about providing a template of justice with which to evaluate how things are going today – here and now. As well as encouraging each and every one of us to ask ourselves, “What am I doing today to make the world a better place for all my sisters and brothers?” Sometimes asked this way, “If you died today, would your life have been worthwhile?”

All of us have heard the musing of those who have reached retirement and are nearing the end of their lives offering variations on the “No one has ever expressed the regret, when facing death, that they didn’t spend enough time at the office.” The challenge is in finding some way to achieve the worldly success we crave without selling our souls in the process.

So this is a worthwhile process for us to undertake, at least once a year, for ourselves and our goals and our priorities.

As a possible opportunity for some reflection, here is a simple ten point questionnaire which might provide some fodder:

1. When it comes down to ‘job vs. family’, how often do I make sure family wins?

2. Do I still feel guilty at times with how fortunate I am and how unfortunate so much of the world seems to be?

3. Am I grateful for my life, my family, my good fortune? Do I thank God for all this?

4. Does the growing disparity between those who have and those who have little cause me increased concern?

5. When friends, co-workers or family members speak unfairly and belittle those of a different ethnic, racial or sexual orientation, do I speak up to defend them?

6. How often do I try to find ‘the common ground’?

7. Am I teaching my children to respect and care for those who are different, marginalized, or disadvantaged in life?

8. Could I do with a little less so that those who have nothing might have a little?

9. What is stopping me from reaching out to an estranged family member or friend?

10. When I die, am I more likely to be greeted with, “Welcome home!”, or “Who are you?”

The Boomers Plus Club Clothing Collection

The members of the Boomers Plus Club would like to thank all of the parishioners of St. Josaphat for their generous donations in regard to the clothing drive. The items collected filled six vehicles. The staff at Marillac Social Center could not believe the large amount of donations they received. The recipients of the clothing items will be very appreciative. Since then, thank you notes have been received and a special story was shared. Shortly after the donations were delivered a young man arrived at Marillac Social Center. He explained to one of the nuns that he was very excited that he finally had a job interview. The only problem was that he did not have the appropriate attire to wear to the interview. The nun told the young man that it was his lucky day. She mentioned that a group of generous parishioners from

St. Josaphat Parish just filled the conference room with clothing items. When the man walked out of the conference room he was dressed in a sport jacket, shirt and tie, slacks, and dress shoes. It was his lucky day and he was very grateful. Thank you for your generosity!

Recently at school:Histories for Kids entertained students in grades K-8 in an assembly entitled, George Washington: Mt. Vernon to Washington, D.C. The presenter geared his stories to the age groups he was speaking to: K-4 and 5-8. We were not only impressed by the things he told us, but also by the questions our students asked. It was truly an informative morning.

We were overwhelmed by the number of student artists who participated in our annual Art Show. We are proud of all of our young artists and encourage them to continue creating.

The SJS Academic team competed in an all-girls competition at Trinity High School. They had great fun and represented SJS very well. We are proud of them.

Looking ahead:Our next Tour and Coffee for prospective parents will be held at 9 am on December 11. If you are interested, please call the school office to register for one of these tours.773-549-0909. We are currently accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year.

Parents spend a lot of time sorting. We sort the laundry and the silverware, toys and coupons, junk mail and bills. We sort through which invitations and opportunities will make it onto the family calendar and which ones we’ll decline. There’s often too much to do, and it can be hard to keep sane. So how do you decide how your family will spend its precious time and energy?

Jesus says, “seek ye first the kingdom of God,” which means put God’s will in the center of your life. Prudence, the virtue that helps us make decisions based on wisdom rather than impulse, can help you sort. When your family is feeling overbooked, exercise prudence by asking, “Which activities bring us closer to one another and to Christ, and which simply make us busy?” —Tom McGrath

The Year of the Catholic FamilyPlease join us for our

We supply the materials AND clean up the mess! The entire experience lasts approximately one hour. We are asking for a donation of $20 per wreath to help defray costs. Religious Ed. Students Learn to Give and be GratefulLast weekend half of our Religious Education students made lunches for our homeless outreach program. The Rel Ed Families donated all of the food and supplies needed to give out lunches for over a month. As we made the sandwiches and packed the brown lunch bag with goodies we prayed for homeless people. We then took all of the lunches over to the rectory and the children learned how and where we give out the lunches each day.

In March the other half of our students will do the same.

Thank you students for your loving and hard work!

Thank you parents for your generous donations!

F r o m t h e C a r d i n a lDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) collection is the primary source of funding for the CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Committed to addressing the root causes of poverty, the CCHD has provided access to invaluable resources for those who struggle in poverty and has made positive impacts throughout Chicago and the United States. The organizations the CCHD supports coordinate

programs that help to change the lives of those less fortunate by creating jobs, providing training for adults and educational opportunities for children, and helping to stabilize neighborhoods. Inspired by Catholic social teachings, the CCHD’s mission is respect for human life from conception to natural death, recognizing that all human beings are created in the image and likeness of God and are endowed with certain inalienable rights.Organizations assisted by the CCHD include the Latino Union of Chicago. Started in 2000 by immigrants, the Latino Union has worked to ensure that low-income immigrant workers have the tools to improve economic and social conditions for themselves and their communities by moving legislation and developing leaders in our communities who arise to break the cycle of poverty and injustice. Earlier this year, the Latino Union led the effort to pass the new wage-theft ordinance in Illinois. For their witness to the social teachings of the Church, which embody Christ’s love for the poor, the Latino Union was recognized nationally by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with the 2013 Sister Margaret Cafferty Development of People Award. For more information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the groups it funds, please visit www.chicagopeaceandjustice.org/cchd or visit www.usccb.org and search “CCHD Collection Resources.”Help us get poverty “off the map,” and support the CCHD in the upcoming collection on November 23 and 24. Please remember that 50 percent of the collection’s proceeds stay here in our archdiocese to fight poverty in our own communities and to defend the dignity of our neighbors.Thank you for your generous consideration of this important call to help our brothers and sisters in need, especially during this season in which we give thanks to God for our many blessings. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Last weekend we blessed and started using our new Gather hymnals. Just a few items to help us get the best use with this new worship aid.

Because the Gather hymnal contains all the new translations of the various parts of the mass, we no longer have the cards available that had the recent changes in wording. Also, many of the most-often recited prayers can be found on the very first page of the hymnal. Additionally, all the congregational prayers can be found in the hymnal, including the Apostle’s Creed we frequently use (found at # 175).

The Gather hymnals each have 3 ribbons which provide an easy way to mark the hymns we will be singing, or the Creed or the scripture readings.

We also no longer have the Seasonal Misallettes available because all the scripture readings for each Sunday can be found in the Gather hymnal. Each week the Hymn

Board in the front of church will list in the first position on the Board the number for this Sunday’s readings. (For example, this week it is the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – C cycle, and the readings can be found at #1190.) Most Sundays you will find the Responsorial Psalm at that place. But in some seasons (e.g. Advent and Lent) we use seasonal psalms which the Cantor will announce at the regular time.

Finally, on the inside front cover of every hymnal is the book plate indicating who donated the hymnal and in whose name or memory the gift was given. Please offer a silent prayer each time you open the book in thanksgiving for the gift, and in memory of those for whom the gift was given.
