MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were recently bap-tized: Liam Beslic son of Goran & Irena; Izumi Rosalie Celis Hara daughter of Michael & Vanessa; Benjamin Bryce Cardali son of Salvatore & Mollie; Kelby John Gassman, II son of Kelby & Lauren; Jax Andrew Johnson son of Kenneth & Elizabeth; Declan Benjamin Westfall son of Joshua & Kimberly

St. Joseph School is accepting applications for Grades 3-7 for the 2015-2016 school year. Please visit www.sjschoolva.org or call the school at 703-880-4350 for more information and to schedule a tour.

Once a Saint, always a Saint!

Peace and good! As we gather to celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension, we celebrate the truth that Jesus has ascended and entered into glory - or as the words of today’s gospel state, “Jesus was taken up to heaven and sat down at God’s right hand.” Jesus says to the disciples, “Go out to all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole of creation.” As we know, there are many ways to give witness to the gospel and our belief in Jesus. Marian month: as we continue to celebrate the Marian month, I invite you to join our parishioners praying the Novena of the Miraculous Medal after the Saturday 8:00 a.m. Mass. Saint Catherine Labouré offers us a method of prayer as we come before our Lord. She shares:

When I go to the Chapel, I place myself before the good God and I say to Him: ‘Lord, here I am, give me what you will.’ If He gives me something, I am very pleased, and I thank Him. If He gives me nothing, I still thank Him because I do not deserve anything. And then again, I tell Him all that passes through my mind; I recount my pains and my joys and … I listen. If you listen to Him, He will speak to you also, because with the good God it is necessary to speak and to listen. He will always speak to you if you go to Him simply and sincerely.

For further information on Saint Catherine Labouré and the devotion to the Miraculous Medal, please visit the Miraculous Medal web site: http://cammonline.org/. Prayer and Thanksgiving: We offer our congratulations and blessings to our First Communicants! On May 16th, students in our Spanish Religious Education program celebrated their First Holy Communion. We are blessed to have these children joining with us at the Eucharistic Table. Let us continue to pray for each child as they continue their faith journey. I would like to thank the parents; the Religious Education staff, catechists, and Father Alberto; and all those who prepared these children for this Sacrament. Your own witness and example inspires these children and enriches their faith journey. Throughout this Marian month we reflect upon the role which Mary plays in salvation history. Her “yes” to God’s invitation forever changed the course of history. Mary offers us three essential pathways for living our faith: *Mary shows us how to listen; *Mary shows us how God’s word must be shared with others; and *Mary shows us how to live in God’s word. As faithful Catholics we observe Mary’s month through many different devotions and traditions. Please join us in one or several of these devotions and traditions.

Year of Consecrated Life

Each week we will have insightful quotes and reflections on consecrated life. Sometimes we need a little help seeing clearly. Various devices aid our focus, from eyeglasses and contact lenses to microscopes and telescopes.

Sometimes seeing clearly means shifting our perspective, too. Take the example of Saint Gertrude (the only female saint to earn the title “the Great”), correcting her vision came about by changing the direction she was facing. A brilliant young Benedictine sister, she excelled in the study of philosophy and literature. Then she received a vision of Jesus, urging her to

trade in her pursuit of the humanities for divinity studies. Gertrude’s heart was ignited with a new flame, and she became a profound mystic.

—Take Five for Faith

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish ministries: SJC Religious Education Program: We thank Reyes Ruiz, Rosalind Murphy, the Religious Education staff, Catechists, and all those who assisted in educating our students in the SJC Religious Education Program. As we conclude another year of catechesis, we thank these individuals for their commitment to sharing their faith, gifts, knowledge, and time with the youth of our parish. We also thank the students and their parents for their commitment to learning more about their Catholic faith. Youth Ministry: We thank the members of our Youth Ministry program who spoke and ministered at the Masses this weekend as they shared their commitment to Work Camp 2015. For more information, please contact David Bristow at [email protected] or at 703.880.4309. The Ladies’ Society: We thank the organizers and volunteers participating in the outreach programs in our local community. Once again, we wish to thank the organizers and volunteers who prepared and staffed the religious goods stand with First Communion accessories and gifts for our Spanish and English speaking parishioners. The Men’s Society: We thank the organizers and volunteers for preparing the celebration of Italian night at the parish this weekend. Buon Appetito! Grazie!! The SJC Facilities Staff: The facilities staff at St. Joseph’s is maintained by exceptional workers who prepared the Church, Parish Hall, and grounds for the celebrations of First Communion, meetings, and gatherings throughout the year.
