The QuestionnaireThe questionnaire is presented in 3 parts.

Part A – A Picture of Our Community – provides the opportunity to gather, explore and present facts and figures about a wide range of facets of parish life.

Part B – Reflective Questions – key questions under 10 main headings for open discussion by your parish community, and the opportunity to highlight existing good practice.

Part C – Our Community’s Initial Thoughts and Ideas about the Future – where your parish community is asked to provide its first thoughts about how it might move forward.

Ultimately, we would like all parishes to provide their final responses using an on-line questionnaire as this will allow us to collate and analyse responses efficiently – and we will be providing information later in the year about how to do this. However, while drafting and sharing your responses within the parish, you may find that the electronic version of the questionnaire proves to be the best way of recording and storing your responses. The e-version of this document is available to download under “resources” on the diocesan website, www.dioceseofbrentwood.net/departments/evangelisation.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or if you have any comments or suggestions to make.

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 2

This questionnaire provides a framework for each parish community in the Diocese to explore its vitality and future direction. The prayer, consultation and reflection that lead to your responses are of central importance to this whole process; the questionnaire is simply the document for systematically recording the outcomes of your deliberations.

Part B - Reflective QuestionsWhen Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee and called his first disciples (Mt 4:18), they must not have had a clue what they were getting into. Four fishermen became ‘apprentices’ to an itinerant leader, teacher and healer, overnight. In Mark’s Gospel (Mk 1:21) the first thing they did was to accompany Jesus into the Synagogue in Capernaum, where he proceeded to break the Jewish law by healing a possessed man on the Sabbath.

There is something exciting about being a disciple, an ‘apprentice’ of Jesus. There is so much to learn and discover. Jesus walked around the countryside with his followers, both women and men; they were a community, a community on the move. The disciples were formed and shaped within this community.

Once Jesus died and rose from the dead, the disciples were terrified. They ran away (to Emmaus) or hid in an upper room or reverted to their previous job – seven of them went back fishing. Time after time Jesus came among them and reassured them. They were totally taken over by the Holy Spirit and began their work as missionaries; they are instructed to go out into the world and proclaim the Gospel.

We live in a very different world today. But as a result of our Baptism, we are called, gifted and sent. We too are sent into the world. We are missionaries within our local population, disciples among all the residents in our neighbourhood.

The local priest looks after the flock. We are immersed in the world; and we engage with each other, with those hurt by the Church, those separated from the Church for whatever reason and those beyond the institution of the Church. Every one of us has a particular pathway of discipleship to follow, and many of us discover it through the communities within which we live.

It is only right that we pray for more men to respond to the call of God to become ordained priests. It is also true that we all need to explore how God is calling us to make a difference in the world we live in. This calling (or vocation) may be to marriage, parenthood, the single life, nursing, policing… . God has an infinite imagination; there is a unique calling for each one of us. We become disciples when we learn

to look at our world through the eyes of Jesus.

This questionnaire will help us to look at our community and discover how it can help each and every one of us become an apprentice of Jesus.

We have heard the facts and figures, the prospect of having 50 priests in our Diocese in 2030, the need for a wider variety of leadership in the Church and the very basic need to become more open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit who is leading us into the future.

Pope Francis gives us clear guidance when he says in Evangelii Gaudium (para 20):

With this call in mind, let us begin to explore the questions before us.

The Christian Faithful are the heart of every worshiping community. If it is to flourish, a community needs a core of members who are committed to the Gospel of Christ and are willing to make the community a priority, giving generously of their time, imagination, gifts and other resources. A viable parish needs a healthy number of active members.

a) How can your community look to sustain and increase the number of people worshipping with you towards 2030?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 42

Young PeopleAs a parish we have the challenge of finding out and addressing the needs of young people from pre-schoolers all the way through to university students. We are aware that many of our young people do not attend Mass. CommunicationWe are working on increasing our communication and making it more transparent, through, for example, using social media, our website, email and asking group leaders to communicate well to their parish groups.MissionWe would like to see mission and evangelism both within our parish and beyond the parish into our surrounding community. Some have suggested that we plan a parish mission and use this as a focus for developing many aspects of parish life. Social eventsWe would like to put on a variety of social events to help people to feel included and part of a friendship group. Some would like to see a parish football team.Music and worshipWe would like to increase the variety of music and worship styles within masses to reflect different tastes.Involvement of peopleWe need to work on more laity involvement, encourage and embracing volunteer opportunities and work on having a more bottom-up hierarchy.Family groups have been successful in the parish before and are a good way of connecting people. This is something that could be explored.Welcoming new and existing parishionersWe would like to work on extending the welcome ministry for both newcomers and existing parishioners and build up a team of people who visit others within the parish. A start is being made on building up a team to welcome new parishioners. We would like this welcoming ministry to have a message of love and acceptance to all. We would like to be a parish that reaches out to others, especially people in the parish who find it difficult to belong.

It is certain that in the future even more communities will be sharing a priest with other worshipping communities. Priests and deacons will be working more collaboratively with people. The prospect of having around 50 active priests in our Diocese in 15 years’ time (2030) certainly sharpens the mind. While we must continue to pray that men will respond to the call of discipleship as ordained priests and deacons, we also need to look carefully at the development of other forms of leadership in the Church.

a) What lay leadership is currently viable and effective in your community?

b) For what other areas of your community life could trained lay men and women assume responsibility?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 43

We have a committee system in place, headed by the Parish Council who meet quarterly. This is supplemented by the Finance Committee and the Liturgy Committee. The Finance Committee respond to the agenda set by the Parish Council. The Liturgy Committee oversees the organisation of liturgy, readers, minsters of communion, welcomers, music and the sacramental programmes. We have effective, well-organised and meaningful preparation for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation which are led by lay people under the direction of the Priest. We also have effective programmes for First Holy Communion preparation and RCIA, again led by lay people and being directed by the Priest. We have a strong team of Eucharistic Ministers who take communion to approximately 20 sick parishioners, weekly at home and fortnightly in nursing homes. There are very strong and well-organised groups within the parish that feed into many areas of community life such as the SVP, youth club, choir, CWL, Catenians, Knights of St Columba, Social Club Committee, the Welcome Committee for new Parishioners and Eucharistic Ministers who visit people at home. These groups are all lead by the laity and serve parishioners, often in a very practical way. There have been questions asked about the ages of the leaders of some of these groups and how we can start planning for effective succession to ensure groups continue to thrive and develop.

Lay leaders could help to recruit and co-ordinate volunteers to ensure that ministries continue going forward and that new people are brought in, trained and enabled to develop their gifts. When we look at the age profile of our involved laity, it is clear that we need to invest in succession planning to ensure that ministries continue to be effective. It is suggested by a number of parishioners that we need to intentionally recruit future leaders and train them through observing and working with existing leaders otherwise we will hit a crisis point where groups are unable to continue to function. Lay leaders could be trained to assist the Priest with specific pastoral issues such as welcoming new parishioners, visiting the sick, prayer ministry, spiritual direction, adult spiritual formation. Although many of these things are addressed through our groups such as the SVP, Eucharistic Ministers, Healing Prayer group, RCIA.The main concern in this area is the age profile of leaders and that not enough active planning for the future is being undertaken.

3

Page 44: St Joseph's Catholic Church - Welcome to St Joseph's€¦  · Web viewThis questionnaire provides a framework for each parish community in the Diocese to explore its vitality and

In parishes where the same small, ageing group of parishioners has served the community extremely well over very many years, there may be some real anxiety about the future. As that small group retires and withdraws from active involvement, the community is at risk of floundering if younger parishioners are unable or unwilling to take their place.

a) How diverse and active are parishioners within the community?

b) How can the parish community invite and prepare more people to support it?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 44

There are many thriving groups within the parish. They range from prayer groups through to the SVP and serve the parish and wider community in spiritual and practical ways. Sometimes people find it difficult to break into these groups and feel as though it is the same people doing many things. Parishioners have suggested increased communication about opportunities to get involved in areas as a positive way of addressing this. This is a concern for our parish and something that we need to actively address.

More communication is needed about the groups and opportunities that are available as often lack of knowledge can stop participation. It would be useful to have a skills pool and a way to coordinate this with needs within the parish. Some parishioners have suggested having a Volunteer Coordinator who can look at people’s skills and put them in touch with areas that have a need. It would be useful to keep an up to date parish register with email addresses and communicate using a variety of methods including social media. This links with our concerns about our young people who are not well represented at Mass numerically. There is a desire to reach out to them. Some feel that activities or timings of events such as coffee mornings, Sunday evening mass, football team, bible studies could make a difference. Some feel that the issue that parish activities are not a priority in the lives of parishioners and the issue is how to encourage them to make it a priority through strengthening their faith or having a renewed encounter with the love of God.

Page 45: St Joseph's Catholic Church - Welcome to St Joseph's€¦  · Web viewThis questionnaire provides a framework for each parish community in the Diocese to explore its vitality and

A flourishing community has worship at the centre of its life. The ultimate goal is to make Jesus Christ known and loved. This is why Jesus Christ is at the heart of every worshipping community. The Eucharist is the principal means in which we celebrate this. The Holy Spirit may well be leading us to discover a variety of forms of worship and devotion in the future. For this very reason a living community makes every effort to encourage parishioners of all ages and backgrounds to participate fully in prayer, devotion, worship and study.

God loves us individually. We respond to God’s love in our own ways. When we come together for worship we all need to have a sense that our relationship with God is strengthened and affirmed.

a) Are there aspects of your community’s regular worship together at Mass that are working particularly well and deepen the spiritual life of those present?

b) Is there anything your community can do to encourage a deeper prayer life and engagement with Scripture?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 45

It would be positive to have a coordinated approach to spiritual life, such as prayer groups, family groups, bible study, evangelism, adult formation, lent and advent groups. Adult formation could explore areas such as how to pray and there could be more opportunities for praying with and for each other. It would be helpful to know who to ask for prayer in emergency situations.Music and singing could be more varied in style across different masses to appeal to different tastes and this could lead to a richer and maybe deeper worship experience. Some fee that regular exposition of the Blessed Sacrament would be a good addition to spiritual life. Some are looking at developing groups that focus on social justice and encourage people to get involved in initiatives (especially young people) in this area. To work towards addressing the needs of our young people some would like to have a specific Youth Mass with opportunities for the young people to participate and to socialise together afterwards.

Sunday worship is warm and inviting, especially during the sign of the peace and blessings. The homily is practical and engaging. Many people enjoy playing a role in Mass, such as the welcome team, the Eucharistic ministers, musicians, children’s liturgy helpers , altar servers and readers. Teams of welcomers greet parishioners and keep the church well ordered with hymn books and newsletters. Some feel there is a need for welcome teams to be more proactive in identifying and engaging with new parishioners. In response to this there is a team being established to visit new parishioners. Some have suggested that it would support our spiritual lives to have a prayer ministry after Masses where people could pray with others in times of need. There is a small group that pray the Rosary after weekday Mass. There are enthusiastic teams of catechists who help to prepare candidates for the sacraments and help with special masses such as First Communion and Confirmation. There are people of different ages at Mass and many families present, although we are aware of a lack of younger people in their teens and twenties.

4

Page 46: St Joseph's Catholic Church - Welcome to St Joseph's€¦  · Web viewThis questionnaire provides a framework for each parish community in the Diocese to explore its vitality and

A flourishing community will be able to show that the Catholic faith is handed on to children, young people and adults by means of regular programmes of religious education and Christian Formation.

a) What good experiences has your community had in the past and what opportunities would you like to see for ‘continuing formation’ in the faith for members of your community?

b) How can closer relationships be developed between the worshipping community, the school(s) the young people attend, and the families that belong to both?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 46

The parish could be more proactive in getting involved in our secondary schools to reach teenagers and possibly their families who don’t go to mass anymore.Catholic schools should encourage and support students in participating in sacraments in the parish. To help with this communication between schools and the parish needs to be strengthened to avoid classes between school and parish activities. It would be really helpful to have a strengthened attitude of working together. We would like to include more students in many aspects of Mass, such as reading, playing instruments, singing and help them to feel valued and as if they have a role. Some have suggested a specific Youth Mass on a Sunday evening, aimed at and participated in by young people, with an opportunity to socialise afterwards. Others have suggested a mission aimed at the whole parish with specific outreach to primary and secondary age children and their families. There are attempts at organising social events linking the parish and schools such as a St Joseph’s walk, an annual welcoming or hospitality evening.School events such as Open Evenings and Fetes are advertised in the parish for parishioners to attend. Some have suggested the Canterbury Walk dates to be changed to accommodate school students.

Good past experiences have been missions, Alpha courses and Alpha follow up courses, the Canterbury Walk particularly for young people, Sunday evening youth mass seemed to give a focus for young people attending mass and then socialising afterwards. Many successful attempts have been made at fundraising for specific needs in the immediate and wider community which have helped people to think about being involved with others in need. People would like to address the lack of involvement by the youth and people in their twenties and some people feel there should be some specific spiritual and social provision for the youth and twenties. Some people would like more adult faith formation in a variety of formats that will be accessible to a range of people at different times in their lives. Others have expressed a desire to pray together more and to learn about different ways of praying. Our parish does not have an overall plan for continuing formation at the moment and there is an opportunity to develop this and help people to grow in their faith and support each other with this.

A flourishing community extends a spirit of hospitality and invites people to become members. It also looks way beyond itself to discover how the spirit of Jesus can be brought to bear on everything that concerns us in the world: our relationship with other Christian Churches, women and men of other faiths and all men and women of good will in our world.

Under this heading we include: hospitality; Ecumenism; Interfaith relationships; involvement in local social and political issues and much more. It explores the practical ways we have of becoming ‘missionary disciples’.

a) What good experiences has your community had regarding our call to be involved with other Christians, other faiths, all men and women of good will?

We have an active Churches Together representative and we participate in their annual week of prayer, culminating in a service. Many of us join the Good Friday procession through Upminster and service in the park. We take part in the Churches Together carol service at Thames Chase. Some feel we could promote Churches Together more and reach out to other faith groups more proactively. We have recently run Alpha courses at the Upminster Baptist Church and Upminster Methodist Church which lead to positive interaction with their staff, church members and some of their congregation joining the Alpha course and other faith formation courses.

Five members of the parish recently attended a presentation by the Diocese of Plymouth about setting up evangelisation teams to reach out to lapsed Catholics and into the local community. We advertise our events and services on Facebook. The SVP are very active in helping people in need in the local community and caring for others with visits. Our local CWL is formed of many of our parishioners and they provide a weekly meal for older people and some of our parishioners who are in Year 12 and 13 at Sacred Heart assist. Some parishioners feel that St Joseph’s needs to get more involved in local community initiatives to let people know we care about the community. Some have suggested that a St Joseph’s school reunion could be used to reach out to lapsed Catholics.

A sustainable community must have an annual income that is sufficient to cover its expenses. There needs to be a reliable level of stewardship among the faithful who willingly give of their time, gifts and energy to sustain the work of the community.

We could do more to increase the average weekly offertory donation by encouraging people to Gift Aid by explaining process regularly and discussing the principle of tithing. There is agreement that the Social Centre needs to have money spent on it but we don’t have a vision for how the land should be used or approximate costs. Parishioners have suggested setting up a Trust to fund capital projects connected with St Joseph’s and using this as an aim for fundraising.Investment into church infrastructure may demand more funds and therefore targeted fundraising would be a good way to achieve this.People in the parish are unclear about exactly what their offertory donations are spent on and lack confidence in making decisions about parish resources for the future without guidance from the Diocese.

People feel that we already share our resources with poorer parts of our Diocese through money we give to the Diocese and charity events. We would like more understanding about where this money is going and a breakdown of what it is used for and this needs to come from the Diocese. It is hard for us to understand the bigger picture of where need is within the Diocese with the limited information available. Many parishioners feel strongly that we should provide better for our priests when they retire and give a realistic pension. Parishioners feel that we need to share our resources with needy people overseas as well as closer to home.

A flourishing community needs good facilities which need to be well maintained. It cannot undertake any building projects, renovations or improvements unless it has the resources to pay for them. It may be that in some places, there is a need for a plan for the community and a plan for the buildings, and they may be separate plans. It is also true to say that our buildings can be a witness to the presence of the Church in our world, or a drain on resources and energy.

a) What sort of use can your community foresee for any unused or underused parish facilities in the future?

b) How can the community develop the capacity to look after its facilities in the future?

Parishioners feel that we need a full premises audit and overview to ensure we are using all facilities to their full potential now and to prepare for the future. Some feel that our parish facilities are unfit for purpose but at the moment there is no single vision for the future. Many feel this should be undertaken by the whole parish rather than a committee. There are many ideas about the shape of the facilities in the future including re-establishing St Peter’s as a Mass Centre with a visiting priest coming to say mass, rebuilding the Social Centre, looking at the balance between the school and parish facilities, merging some of the school and parish facilities and making it easier to use school and parish facilities in a more interchangeable way. The parish is actively making use of St Peter’s now it is not used as a Mass Centre for Formation Courses and for parish social events. St Joseph’s Social Club has an active committee who plan regular community and social events and work hard to make the club attractive to parishioners and lettings. Both facilities are used widely by parishioners for coffee mornings, Guiding groups, youth club, parties, baptismal celebrations, First Communion and confirmation celebrations.

Parishioners have many ideas about developing and looking after facilities in future including employing a Business Manager to manage facilities and build up revenue streams, set up a Trust fund for capital projects connected with St Joseph’s and use this to plan for future projects. This would link in with many other ideas such as improving or redesigning the whole church and school site, improving the Social Centre, making buildings more efficient by insulation and fitting solar panels, and coordinating and increasing the lettings potential. There is a need to take action in the longer term about our facilities to ensure they can serve our parish effectively in the future. Parishioners feel that more people need to be involved in looking after facilities through wider communication and possibly reinstating a Premises Management Committee to have an overview and share regularly with parishioners. Many people would like to be able to provide accommodation for our retired parish priests.

A flourishing community may be influenced by its location. The proximity of neighbouring parishes can have a real impact on the vibrancy of a community. If several communities are in close proximity with large, ageing buildings that are only half-full, this will need to be taken into account when considering the future.

Our basic question is about how we can enable communities to flourish in order for us to deepen our sense of discipleship and service. Our parish churches are not private chapels maintained simply because the community has enough money to cover the expense.

a) How does your community feel about the possibility that the only way to ensure flourishing in the future is to become part of a new parish community?

b) Are there ways in which your community can serve and support neighbouring communities?

Our parishioners have many questions around this issue over the practical organisation of it as most of our masses are full and we feel we don’t have capacity to merge or incorporate another parish community. There are also questions around how we would reorganise our parish if we didn’t have a resident priest and issues relating to this such as how priests would then be supported if they did not live within the parish community. We are concerned that we look after the people of the church, the body of Christ and that we don’t confuse the community with buildings when we talk about the Church. The parish feels uncertain and unsure of the implications of becoming part of a new parish community.

Our parish could look at ways of supporting other communities by opening up and sharing sacramental programmes and welcoming others into parish groups.

c) If applicable, what is the relationship between different churches or Mass centres within the parish or between linked parishes?

d) Is/are there neighbouring parishes which would lend themselves to being linked to your parish or to becoming part of a partnership or “cluster”?

St Peter’s no longer operates as a Mass Centre.

Our primary school, St Joseph’s is served by the parishes of St Joseph’s and English Martyrs and this leads to some working together between the parishes.

Young people are not just the ‘future’ of the Church; they are very much part of the present. We all need to look at how actively young people are encouraged and affirmed in their contribution to the community throughout the year. The enthusiasm and energy of young people can sometimes be daunting to those who are older, but they are also signs of the Holy Spirit within us and among us.

a) What good experiences regarding Church life do the young people have in your community?

b) How can the presence and witness of young people be more encouraged and supported in the community?

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 52

10Young People

We have young people who enjoy altar serving at all of our masses and there are regular courses to train new altar servers, which are always popular. We have a thriving Youth Club that meets regularly during term time and organises many, popular sporting and social activities for our young people. Our young people enjoy the confirmation programme, which runs every year and covers a range of though provoking and enjoyable formation. We also have the resource of Brentwood Catholic Youth Service to draw on. We have a very popular children’s liturgy programme with many children and parents involved during term-time. The children enjoy the First Communion programme and we have committed catechists who lead the children through several months of preparation. Some of our young people benefit from trips to Lourdes organised by BCYS and HCPT.In the past the Canterbury Walk was very popular amongst teenagers.

There is concern about our young people falling away from the community after confirmation and there are many ideas about changing this. The confirmation programme is the only spiritual input that we provide for our young people. Although the Youth Club is very popular and active, it centres around sporting and social events. People feel it would be helpful to speak to our young people and ask them what they want. Other ideas are: youth services structured and run by young people, a mission focused on the youth and their parents, revitalise the Canterbury Walk, provide a forum for young people’s questions about faith to be answered, improved communication including social media, creating a youth parish council and a youth social committee, more links between the parish and schools, fun days, family days, youth choir and other musical opportunities, children’s liturgy at both Sunday masses, extend confirmation activities beyond the programme.

The priorities for our parish over the next years are:to engage in conscious and intentional succession planning within our groups to enable them to move forward and continue to support the priest in sacramental programmes and other ways;to enable each member of our community to find their vocation or charism within the church community to enable each one of us to fulfil our call of discipleship;to develop our parish so we have a structure lead by the priest and the Parish Council that can function effectively through times of change;to reach out as missionary disciples to our surrounding community and spread God’s love in a spiritual and practical way.

There is no doubt that there are some really innovative things going on within our worshipping communities from Parish Fun Days which bring together the whole community to imaginative liturgies during Holy Week; from exciting Confirmation programmes to pilgrimages and vigils.

a) Is there something your community is involved in which will be of interest to others in the Diocese? Please use as much space as you need.

Thank you for completing Section B. The final section is brief but does need serious thought.

We have many strengths in our parish:a developing Parish Council, a growing Finance Committee, sacramental preparation programmes that work as supportive teams reporting to the Priest,a variety of groups that work together to help and support many people in the parish and wider community in practical and spiritual ways such as CWL, SVP, Eucharistic ministers, toddler group and many others, many caring parishioners who quietly share their faith and help others.

We have some areas for development that we would like to address in the short and long term:we would like to engage and keep our young people in their teenage years and early twenties and keep them as active and cherished members of our community,we would like to have effective and proactive succession planning in our groups and sacramental preparation,we would like our groups to be more cohesive and communicative and work together for the good of the parish,we would like to be more inclusive and welcoming and help everyone to become a valued member of the community,we would like to provide for the older members of our community and help alleviate any loneliness or isolation that comes from being alone or less mobile,we would like all members of our parish to receive appropriate formation to encourage their individual prayer life and spiritual gifts,we would like to develop our worship practice, we would like to increase our commitment to working with other denominations to gain strength and solidarity as Christians in a secular world,we would like to be an outward looking parish who makes it our mission to help the least, the last and the lost both in our community, our country and in the World.

b) The Consultation Process

Stewards of the Gospel – Parish Questionnaire – May 2016 56

Our initial thoughts and ideas (continued)We would like to introduce a structure that enables the laity to complement the Priest and to ensure our parish is moving from maintenance to mission (as urged by Pope Frances in Evangelii Gaudium):our laity need to be trained to understand their role, empowered to act as directed by the Holy Spirit and commissioned to take God’s love into our parish and our communities, our laity need to be encouraged into a mindset that expects each one of us to have a role or vocation within the parish and wider community, our laity need to fulfil our baptismal calling as ‘missionary disciples’our laity need to ensure our Priests are fully supported, loved and cared for by the whole community, our laity need to have structures that can enable the parish and community to function in times of transition and change in the years ahead, both short and long term, our laity need the ability to actively encourage and support more vocations.
