COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

WINTER UNIFORM During Term 2 and 3 all students are expected to wear the winter uniform which includes a tie for both boys and girls. Staff are constantly working with students to ensure that our uniform is worn well. We also appreciate the support of parents who make sure their sons/daughters have the correct uniform and wear it well. Could I also remind you that we have second hand uniforms available and we are committed to assist families if they need financial help with the purchase of uniforms. Could I ask that you take note of the following:

• Girls’ skirts must be worn KNEE LENGTH. If girls choose to wear slacks they must be the approved SAPSS style available through Joprim.

• School shoes must be plain black, polishable, lace up leather school shoes. • Sport shoes must be of the jogger or cross trainer type (not a casual canvas type). • Long hair must be tied back off the face. • Sport shorts must be plain black medium length fine mesh basketball type from Joprim. • Boys must wear their school grey socks above the ankles with the coloured bands showing. • Boys’ school shirts must be worn tucked in. • School ties must be worn by boys and girls in Terms 2 and 3.

Full school uniform must be worn correctly to and from school. We appreciate the support of all in helping us maintain a high standard of uniform at all times. ANZAC DAY This year ANZAC Day falls on the second Thursday of the school holidays. We have a great tradition of students and staff representing our schools in the ANZAC Day march in Port Macquarie and at the commemoration following. Our student leaders are expected to attend and other students are also welcome to march. All students marching are asked to assemble outside Beau Thai Restaurant at 9.30am. The SAPSS drum band will lead us in the march down Horton Street. The following summary of the origin and significance of ANZAC Day was delivered by teacher Jason Warneken, at a recent school assembly. “ANZAC Day commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand Troops at Gallipoli on 25th April, 1915. The date, 25th April, was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. In 1917, the word ANZAC meant someone who fought at Gallipoli and later it came to mean any Australian or New Zealander who fought or served in the First World War. During the Second World War, ANZAC Day became a day on which the lives of all Australians lost in war time were remembered. In recent times it has come to include all theatres of war in which Australians have served. The spirit of ANZAC recognises the qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice which were demonstrated at the Gallipoli landing.”

St Joseph’s Feast Day Mass and Centenary Celebrations

Friday 3rd May

9:30 am

St Joseph’s Regional College

Parents, family and friends are invited to join us for Mass,

followed by morning tea on this special occasion.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As we move to the Term I break at St Joseph’s Regional College, I would personally pay tribute to both teaching and support staff who have worked so conscientiously in their respective vocations. Given that this has been my first term at St Joseph’s, I can only say that I am both humbled and enthused by the significant support I have been given in settling in to my role as Principal here at the College. I would particularly like to acknowledge, Assistant Principal, Mrs Cath Eichmann, Coordinating Principal of SAPSS, Mr Jim O’Brien and Lismore Catholic Schools Office Education Consultant, Mrs Tonia Flanagan for the extra time they have devoted in assisting me. In addition, I would especially mention our College Office Manager, Mrs Michelle Reynolds and Staff Assistant, Mrs Wendy Welsh for their untiring work here at St Joseph’s Regional College. To our Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation, Ms Nora Swain, our School Chaplain, Fr. James Forster and Parent Assembly Cluster Organiser, Mrs Peta Rourke thank you for your commitment to our community and your support in my role as Principal in my first year. Finally thank you to the most important part of the College, our students, your commitment to your studies and fundraising activities this term for Caritas has been outstanding.

ANZAC Day - Special contribution by students of St Joseph’s Reg ional College

This year we encourage all students to represent the College Community on ANZAC Day. Not only is this a great opportunity to show respect for the men and women who served our country to help preserve our democratic way of life, but also a wonderful opportunity for students to be recognised for their citizenship and sense of loyalty to St Joseph’s Regional College. The time spent representing the College can be counted towards students’ Community Service Record and on the Principal’s Reference for Year 11 and 12 students. All students marching will meet outside Beau Thai Restaurant on the corner of Horton Street and William Street between 9.15am and 9.30 am . Students are asked to wear their full winter uniform, including the College tie and bring their school hat or cap. St Joseph’s Feast Day and Centenary Celebrations .

In the first week of Term 2 our school community will celebrate our Parish Schools Centenary at our annual St Joseph Feast Day Mass. (Friday 3rd of May, 9.30) You are most welcome to attend this important occasion in our College’s and St Agnes’ Parish’s history. At St Joseph’s Regional College, we often talk to students about the importance of building tradition and holding fast to our Mission as a Catholic College. Our Mass will certainly affirm our ongoing, service thanks and commitment to St Agnes’ Parish in the ongoing formation of a strong Catholic Education in our region.

2014 Primary School Visits Conclude

This week I had the pleasure of visiting St Joseph’s Regional College’s remaining feeder schools. I would like to particularly thank Mrs Nicole Prior, and Year 7 students, Lily Smith and Torren Hunter who addressed students at St Agnes Primary. Also to Mrs Lisa Freeman and Year 7 students, Mackenzie Adams and Tarran Marr-Harris who visited St Joseph’s Primary. We should feel very proud of the wonderful job done by our Year 7 students in explaining many of the aspects associated with transition from the Primary to Secondary school. Year 7 2014 Information Evening

As I have communicated in last week’s Newsletter, St Joseph’s Regional College Year 2014 Year 7 Information Night will occur on Tuesday 7 th of May commencing at 6.30 pm . At this gathering, parents will have an opportunity to book an interview time. I therefore encourage families to be aware of this date if they are intending to enrol their son or daughter in the school next year. A parental interview must occur for every student’s family intending to enrol their son or daughter into Year 7 at St Joseph’s Regional College next year. Fee Reminder

Statements were issued early this term with a due date of 26 th April 2013. Thank you to families who have already made payments, if you have not as yet paid your account it would be appreciated if you could finalise this early in Term 2.

A reminder to Year 9 & 10 that all Term 1 elective sport must be paid before students can select a Term 2 sport. All excursion costs should also be paid prior to the excursion taking place.

Our preferred method of payment is via Bpay. EFTPOS, cheque or cash are accepted through the front office. Finally, I would like to wish all staff, families and supporters of St Joseph’s Regional College a well-earned holiday break. I have witnessed so many examples of us working together to assist young people while on their journey during this most precious time in their lives.

Thank you for your anticipated support in this area. God Bless

Exams Term 2

A reminder to all parents’, exams will take place for Year 11 students in Weeks 4 & 5 of Term 2, and for Year 7-10 students in Week 6. It is imperative that students do not have planned absences during this time, or in the weeks leading into exams. Study tips, study guides and exam timetables will be available early in Term 2.

STUDENT'S LEAVING SCHOOL SICK Just a reminder that students in Years 7-10 are not permitted to use their mobile phone between the hours of 8.15am-3.15pm. The school rules clearly state this and it is school policy that students using the mobile will have it confiscated until parents can pick it up and the student will be given an afternoon detention.

We have an increasing incidence of students phoning parents to pick them up sick, without going through the correct channels of going to the front office where an office staff member or teacher will contact the parents, or allow a student to phone home using a College phone.

If your child does contact you from a mobile phone we would ask that you contact the front office prior to coming out to the College in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation for all concerned, and detentions having to be issued. Please note that regular late arrivals and early departures are detrimental to your child's overall attendance rate and education. Thanks for your ongoing support.

Cath Eichmann Assistant Principal

SCHOOL FEES

Many thanks to all of those families who have paid their school fees and to those who are committed to an ongoing Direct Debit system for paying their fees.

To operate our schools efficiently and with the best possible facilities, school fees are the most critical component of the means of resourcing our schools. Any payment of outstanding fees would therefore be most appreciated. Our Fee Assistance Program is available to anyone who is experiencing financial difficulties and I would urge families in this situation to discuss it with the Principal or myself at Parish Administration – 6588 7444.

John McQueen Director Parish Education

ATTENDANCE REMINDER

A reminder to all parents, notes must be in within 7 days of your child's absence or the absence will be reported on your child's report as UNEXPLAINED.

Students who have more than 15 days leave in a year must have supporting documentation from a doctor or make written application to the Assistant Principal. This may also require an interview with the Principal or Assistant Principal.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION

CENTENARY BOOK After many months of research and preparation, the Centenary Book is almost ready for print. This comprehensive historical document will be professionally printed and will include photos and stories of Catholic education in St Agnes’ Parish. It will include St Joseph’s Family Services and all Parish schools and will be very reasonably priced at just $20. How many books should we have printed? A very good question. We are very keen to find out how many people are interested in purchasing a copy of the Centenary Book which is anticipated to be available in May this year.

We would really appreciate your expression of interest to help us gauge the demand. All expressions of interest to Parish Administration – 6588 7444 or email: [email protected]

CARITAS - PROJECT COMPASSION Macquarie House Fundraising BBQ - sausage sizzle and drink was on the menu. Thank you to students and staff who supported this cause.

Senior Rice Fast and VOLUNTEER out of uniform day

How would it feel to live on only a cup of rice a day? On Wednesday this week our senior students participated in the last of our Caritas fundraising events, raising an outstanding $540.00 Students were given the opportunity to experience what it might be like to only eat rice for the day, like many others throughout the world. Ninety eight of our senior students ate only a cup of rice at recess and another cup at lunchtime. They certainly developed a strong sense of empathy for those less fortunate, who don’t have enough food to eat each day. Our seniors certainly embraced the volunteer theme of our out of uniform day. A fantastic reminder of how people regularly give of themselves for the benefit of the community. We had volunteers dressed as surf life savers, ironman aide station workers, Vinnies staff, RSPCA volunteers and even Katniss from The Hunger Games. Well done seniors, you truly represented college spirit.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL-

This festival will be held in Melbourne in December and is aiming to gather 3000 young people from around Australia. Young people from Year 9 to young adults are invited to the event. St Agnes’ Parish is intending to take a team of youth to this National Youth Event. Students who are interested are asked to see Ms Swain this week.
