COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

FAITH AND MISSION As Catholic Schools we are committed to the holistic development of each student entrusted to our care. Therefore, we strive for excellence in teaching and learning, spiritual formation, pastoral care, sport and in the creative and performing arts. Our focus on pastoral care is central to our mission as a Catholic school. Pastoral care is wellbeing in action. It relies on clear, open communication and building strong relationships among staff, students and parents to ensure the wellbeing of each student. Students who attend St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools (SAPSS) “belong to a community which promotes active witness, values, respect and kindness, cherishes truth and fairness and commits to personal excellence” to quote Pastoral Coordinator Nicole O’Connell. The other dimension which differentiates us as Catholic schools is the religious dimension. Students study Religious Education, engage in prayer, liturgies, retreats and reflection days, community service and social justice activities. They also have the opportunity, when in Years 9 and 10, to join the Catholic Schools’ Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) network program. The CSYMA program is a new initiative this year that enables students to join a Youth Ministry class. As well as the regular Religious Education curriculum, students learn about youth ministry and develop skills in peer to peer ministry. This enables them to work within their own school and with students in our local primary school communities as leaders of student faith formation. Youth Ministry Officers, who are Gap Year Trainees, play an important role in assisting teachers with the delivery of this very practical program. Our schools are fortunate to have a Parish Priest like Father Donnelly and a Chaplain in Father James who are both so committed to supporting youth in their faith and life journey. Within our schools we are also blessed with very committed Leaders of Evangelisation and Catechesis in Nora Swain and Helen Gilbert at St Joseph’s Regional College, Joan Lancaster and Daniel Blackman at St Paul’s High School/MacKillop Senior College and Steve Hall at Newman Senior Technical College. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Special Achievement I would like to congratulate Hannah Reynolds for achieving a High Distinction in Year 9 for the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) in English. This is a fantastic result Hannah, keep up the great work.

Display Night On Wednesday evening the College community joined to celebrate learning of our Years 7 to 10 students in Creative Arts and Technology and Applied Studies. I was very impressed by the calibre of students’ work in all learning areas. The great work done by the TAS and Creative Arts Faculty certainly affirmed that great sense of support we show one another in our community. In addition to these faculties, there were many other staff members from other faculties who assisted right up to the very end of the evening. Thank you also to the many Support staff who did so much preparation work today. Thank you for being great stewards of all our students who participated this evening. The quality of the practical - artistic work, hospitality, performances and renditions was of a excellent standard. So thank you everyone for putting on such a great evening in celebrating the quality of learning at SJRC! Thank you also to our families who give so much support to our educational endeavour at St Joseph’s Regional College.

Subject and Excursion Fees Firstly, I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be ’. As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement. With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released. Families have received their College accounts either via email or post this week. It would be very much appreciated if accounts be finalised by 14th November 2014. God Bless

Nora Swain, Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation Year 11 Reflection Day

As Youth Minister at St Joseph's Regional, I had the pleasure along with the other Youth Ministers from the parish, of joining with Mr Dave Lewis and Ms Nora Swain to organise and run the Year 11 Reflection day that was held last Friday at Lighthouse Beach. The day consisted of games, speakers, both small and whole group activities (ranging from discussion to decorating light-bulbs to writing individuals talents/gifts on a chalkboard door), self- reflection and ended with a beautiful mass. It was such a blessing to see all the students getting involved and enjoying the experience, while taking time to reflect on themselves and their journey ahead.

THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’ • Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject

that does not require writing tasks is Maths. • English is not the only subject that requires essays. • Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be

essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended. • Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES

NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

• 75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each. • 95% of your tasks will require structured written responses. • Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written

responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check.

THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC.

When: Every MONDAY

Where: GL8

When: Lunch time

What: Learn how to prepare written responses for AL L subjects.

Bring your lunch…lollies provided!

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

ATTENTION CURRENT YEAR 9 - YEAR 10 TECHNOLOGY OPTIO NS FOR 2015

All Year 10 students in 2015 will be required to bring their own device (iPad or laptop) next year. The device you choose to bring may depend on your future path of study in Years 11/12 as well as your own preference. To assist students and parents to consider the options, a website has been setup specifically to deal with this. The link is http://go2school.wix.com/year102015 This can also be accessed via the Quicklinks section of the College website

Options, policies, tips for home, how to order a school laptop and more can all be accessed from this site. There is also a contact form if you have any further queries.

This week's tip

Following on from last week’s tip to keep devices out of the bedroom, this week's tip follows on from that theme.

At the end of the day all digital devices are turned off and kept in a common place outside bedrooms for charging. This includes parents and other siblings. Once it is lights out then out with the phone, iPod, tablet or laptop. Everyone needs a good nights’ sleep uninterrupted by digital distractions.

LIBRARY Term 4 Competition: This will be something completely different!

Go to this website to explore…. https://www.smore.com/fgegx-green-sock.

Looking forward to some amazing entries this term.

November is Picture Book Month November is celebrated annually in Library land as being “Picture Book Month”. Some may question why a secondary school library has Picture Books amongst its collection. I love this quote from the official Picture Book Month website (www.picturebookmonth.com) because I think it encapsulates so much about the never-ending debate about print vs non-print. In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book. So please consider a Picture Book amongst your November reads, and savour the ‘beautiful craft’ that has produced it. Year 11 Students in Year 11 have been given print and email notifications of Preliminary course books due back. At the end of this week, outstanding items will be billed. Years 7-10 Students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to start collecting their text and Library books together in readiness for a quick return after the exams in Weeks 9 and 10. There will be several opportunities for students to return books, such as Library staff visiting PC rooms with a trolley, and Library staff with a trolley being available in the Lockers area at certain times. However, ultimately it is the responsibility of every student to return their books in good condition. We are looking forward to a seamless end-of-year textbook return period.

Page 7: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 7th November 2014 term 4

Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library. Follow us on Twitter – @sjrcexchange Karen Bale Teacher Librarian

STUDENT SUCCESS Alex Hollis has been riding horses since she was 2 years old, little did anyone know that this hobby would become an obsession and a life-long passion. Alex started with pony club and showing, her first pony was small enough to fit behind the seats of the car, until a few years later when she needed something bigger. There are many different genres in horse riding and Alex has tried them all but her heart lies in campdrafting. In 2013 Alex was ranked 10th in Australia for the under 17 age group and the top 25 are invited to compete in Tamworth at the National Finals each January. In 2012 the Hollis family travelled approximately 40,000kms throughout the year for Alex to compete, going to places far and wide, like Trangie for NSW State Sporting and Campdrafting Championships. At this event Alex finished 6th in the state, she then went on to Warwick for the QLD State Sporting and Campdrafting and Gymkhana Championships where Alex won the QLD State Title at 12 years of age and was selected in the NSW Team. The Hollis family have only 2 weekends free between now and the middle of December with competitions most weekends. Alex is about to embark on a new adventure as she begins her career in the racing industry. Being a jockey has been a long-time dream for Alex and her family have been happy and supportive to make this dream come true.

St Joseph’s Regional College are very lucky to have a group of very skilled and successful equestrians and many may not be aware that our College team won the interschool competition earlier this year in Taree.

STUDENT SUCCESS Congratulations Kaitlin Nickl! Katelin received her Guide Queen's badge in the holidays. This has to be completed before the recipient turns 18. It involved many activities and a portfolio of work. She chose as her skill the learning of sewing techniques. Likewise she had to complete the planning and running of a hike and camping event for junior Guides. It takes a year or more to complete the requirements and receive the badge. It is a high achievement which many Guides never achieve due to the age restriction and time commitment.

RUGBY NEWS

On Friday the 31st of October, St Joseph's Regional College Rugby players were treated to a visit by injured Wallabies Captain, Stephen Moore. Moore, who has 92 test caps, was in the Hastings area as a special guest for the launch of the newest Rugby club on the Mid-north coast, the Wauchope Thunder.

Moore was joined by Waratahs player, Steven Hoiles who assisted the 22 man SJRC squad with some backlines and advice, while Moore took aside the forward pack for some heavier contact and scrum work.

The players were grateful for this unique visit and will look to the 2015 season with greater confidence and knowledge.

CRICKET NEWS

Berg Shield Cricket

St Joseph’s Regional hosted St Pauls in round 1 of Berg Shield this year. After whittling an original number of 45 students down to the final team, Regional was confident leading in to the local derby. St Pauls elected to bat and got off to a steady start pushing the ball well into the gaps. Regional eventually broke through, taking a couple of good catches and keeping the pressure up to St Pauls. Young gun Toby “the human target” Fraser was thrown the ball and enticed some ordinary shots to claim a couple of crucial wickets. As the St Paul’s innings progressed steadily, some unsteady catching attempts gave the batsmen more lives than a Tabby cat, enabling a competitive score of 140 to be made. Rossy behind the stumps claimed a great stumping and some beautiful keeping along the way.

After sacrificing a whole watermelon and a case of creaming soda, Regional were pumped up by supercoach Ryan’s speech at the change of innings. Unfortunately the wrong message was taken on

board by the boys and Regional collapsed to 3 wickets for 10 runs. Zac Jones and Lachie Smith steadied the ship admirably and after 15 overs Regional were still in with a fighting chance. Runs were still hard to come by as the human target Toby Fraser flung the bat for a couple of boundaries and all of a sudden, there was a hint of hope. As the overs disappeared quicker than quicker than a school kid after the Friday after school bell, Regional fell a few runs short of the St Paul’s total. Lachie Smith batted throughout the innings to remain unbeaten on 38, supported well by Zac Jones and the human target, Fraser. Full credit to St Pauls who now advance to round 2.
