COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

PARENT CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE Earlier this year, following a workshop to update the constitution of the Advisory Board, we agreed to

change the name from St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools (SAPSS) Advisory Board to the SAPSS

Consultative Committee. The rationale for this name change was because the term “consultative

committee” more accurately reflected the mission and purpose of this group.

This Parent Consultative Committee (PCC) consists of the Principals from the four secondary

colleges and parent representatives from each. The parents currently serving on the committee

include:

Justin Poppleton (Chairman), John Heagney, Trevor Dickson, Lynn Lelean, Milva Wheate, David

Frewin, Peta Rourke, Chris Smith, Rodney Smith, Debra Ward and Stephanie Pepper.

The role of the Parent Consultative Committee includes the following:

• To affirm, support and validate SAPSS College policies and initiatives;

• To act as a “critical friend” for testing new ideas;

• To provide feedback to College leaders on the effectiveness of school initiatives and

programs;

• To provide a ‘voice’ for parents to make suggestions, express views and share experiences

and expectations; and

• To provide direct support to the SAPSS Leadership Team initiatives designed to engage the

broader parent community.

The PCC meets on a monthly basis and parents are invited to suggest items for the agenda or to put

forward proposals for consideration.

One of the challenges we face as secondary colleges is maintaining the involvement of parents as

their children progress through secondary schools. Our colleges are committed to a partnership with

parents and are always seeking strategies to develop this partnership in a way that meets the needs

of parents. Through the PCC we are hoping that we can strengthen our partnership and provide

parents with the opportunities they are looking for to engage effectively with our secondary colleges.

being ambassadors for the College and role models for their peers.

A Reminder regarding Student Report Distribution an d Payment of College Accounts Firstly, I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be ’. As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement. With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released. Families have received their College accounts either via email or post this week. It would be very much appreciated if accounts be finalised by 14th November 2014. God Bless

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATI ON FESTA CHRISTI Festa Christi is a gathering for selected Year 8 students from Parish Secondary Schools in the South of the Diocese to celebrate their faith at a Diocesan level.

The gathering will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who practice their faith. The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating the Eucharist together. The program has been geared to meet the needs of these Year 8 students. The gathering will be an overnight experience that will allow students to build relationships with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share about their faith journey.

What: Festa Christi – a youth gathering for students from every Parish school in the Southern Region of the Diocese.

Year 10 Mass “Jesus you are our light!”

This week Year 10 students gathered at St Agnes Church for a year group mass. It was an opportunity for the students to reflect on their time at the College and how each of us, as part of the College community, are a light to the world. Each student in their RE classes had written a prayer on a candle about how they can make a difference. The reflection after communion was a power point presentation with images of all the positive ways Year 10’s have made an impact in our community by reaching out to others. Father James spoke about how our everyday actions should reflect the light of Christ and used a torch to make his point and bring alive the message for the students. Thank you to the staff and students for their wonderful involvement and participation and Mr Johnson for his coordination of the celebration. Year 11 Reflection Day “Cross the Line”

Today the Year 11 students will have a break from their regular routine and classes to attend a reflection day at Lighthouse Beach Surf Club. Year 11 students have a reflection day at the beginning of the school year and now as they move into their final year of studies. Reflection days and retreats are an important part of our school community because they recognise that the focus of our school community is much more than academic excellence. Taking time to reflect on our own spiritual journey, our relationship with God and others is at the heart of our mission as a Catholic School. The theme for the reflection day is “Cross the Line”. As parents, this may be an opportunity to ask your son or daughter, “What does cross the line mean?” Thank you to Mr Lewis and the Pastoral teachers for the coordination and participation in the day’s events. A special thank you to the Youth Ministry Officers who are doing wonderful work in their peer ministry in our parish schools. A wonderful lunch was provided by Mrs Avery and wonderful assistants, thank you.

These applications are now available from the College office. When the application has been completed at home by students and parents it should be returned to the pigeon hole marked submit

Attention Year 10 students and parents

THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’ • Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject

that does not require writing tasks is Maths. • English is not the only subject that requires essays. • Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be

essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended.

• Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

• 75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each. • 95% of your tasks will require structured written responses. • Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written

responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check.

THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC.

If you want to know what your child is doing when connected to the world then do not allow them to

lock themselves away in their bedroom with their laptop or iPad. Have a policy that all devices are

kept and used in a common area. If computers have to be in bedrooms then doors should not be

closed.

Display Night is a presentation of the wonderful works of our Junior Year 7-10 Students. It provides an opportunity for parents and friends to come see the hard and diligent work all students have put into both the TAS (Technical and Applied Studies) and CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) subjects. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. PDHPE - YEAR 12 HSC COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES – TERM 4 2014

Year 12 HSC Community and Family Studies (CAFS) students are undertaking an Independent Research Project for their first assessment task. Projects are based on current social topics and selected by the individual student. The HSC students are required to gain data from groups of people that are relevant to their topic. Students attending St Joseph’s Regional College may be asked to voluntarily complete anonymous surveys or questionnaires in regards to opinions and experiences.
