PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

DEVELOPING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WTIHIN OUR COMMUN ITY Our Canteen Volunteers are very important in our community and I sincerely appreciate the generosity of our parents who participate in this act of community service. We will celebrate this service with a dinner out on Wednesday 30th October. I would like to thank Jo Farthing and Emma Daley for their organisation and encourage our volunteers to attend and enjoy a very relaxing evening together. The most important relationship of all is the relation parents have with their sons and daughters. I came across the following article and share it as a great reminder to us all of how to build that very special relationship.

Five ways of building secure relationships with teenagers: Acceptance: every teenager is different and their temperament reflects this. So it is important to adjust to a teenager’s personality. A teenager who feels accepted for who they are feels secure and at ease with themselves.

Time: this is the greatest investment a parent can make in developing a lasting bond with their teenager. If a teenager feels you always have time for them then they will feel they can come to you with a worrying problem at any time and you will make the time to listen and help them work through it. Time spent does not have to be entertainment filled. It is the small ordinary day to day time spent with a teenager that makes all the difference.

Life lessons: teaching teenagers life lessons is vital if they are to be equipped for life later on. It is important to acknowledge both your c teenager’s negative and positive emotions. Teaching them to manage difficult emotions such as anger and disappointment as well as celebrating successes will help them manage themselves in life. The best way to do this is by having them see us live out the principles and guidelines we are sharing with them. Remember, they are constantly watching and learning.

Resilient families: keeping the lines of communication open and setting clear boundaries helps make a stable secure home. How we handle the stresses of life also helps teach resilience. It is important to see things through and keep going in the tough times. It is OK for teenagers to see that everyone faces things they find difficult in their life. The trick is to resolve them rather than ignore them.

Patience: this is a great quality for kids to learn as early as possible. A parent’s patience towards a teenager allows them to work through issues at their own pace and still feel loved and valued no matter how frustrating situations can be.

Family rituals: these are important in bringing the family together and giving them a sense of being part of something, a sense of belonging. They can be as small as having regular evening meals together or a family outing on a Sunday afternoon. Make it a time of fun and relaxation where you can catch up with what is going on in each other’s lives.

Clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller says a sense of belonging “is the most powerful protective factor. It is the most powerful remedy for loneliness, hopelessness and loss of meaning in all our lives. In research on Australian young people three forms of belonging dominate: belonging to and feeling loved by your family; belonging to a diversity of friendship groups; and belonging to and fitting in at school.”

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS

I sincerely thank all the generous people who support our College by giving up their free time to

work in our Canteen. It is a great service and also a nice way to catch up with other parents and

share some conversation time together.

We also need more volunteers and if you are interested I encourage you to contact Jo Farthing or

Emma Daley at the College.

My sincere thanks to our current volunteers: Kim Galloway, Julie Davis-Chaplin, Marion Pallot, Kate Camilleri, Viccy Tickle, Julie Leahy, Irene Dowton, Helen Anderson, Karen Walsh, Michelle Cramp, Pat Shirt, Stephanie McKinnon, Julie Coombes, Dianne Hughes, Lisa McPherson and Deb Quilligan. YEAR 11 AWARD ASSEMBLY

On Thursday we had our Year 11 award assembly. Our Year 11 group has been a very positive

A MESSAGE FROM ST AGNES PARISH EDUCATION A note from the Director of Parish Education Students and staff regularly get involved in a variety of community events. One such recent event was the Port Macquarie 70.3 Ironman. I had the opportunity to speak to some of the organisers and particularly some of the competitors who openly expressed their gratitude and praise for the many volunteers that made it such a successful community event.

“They’re so friendly and willing to help.” “Couldn’t do it without them.” I think some of the most memorable events of school days are characterised by working with others as a team and working together for the benefit of others. The beautiful prayer of St Francis is ‘spot on’ when it says: “For it is in giving that we receive.” Congratulations to all the students and members of staff who gave up substantial amounts of time for the benefit of others. Thank you for helping to make the event possible and your ongoing commitment for supporting community events in the future. John McQueen Director Parish Education Officer

CURRICULUM NEWS

Edwina McCoy the Board of Studies Liaison Officer for the North Coast region of NSW delivered a presentation to our Year 11 students yesterday about HSC assessment and the process by which HSC marks and the ATAR are calculated. During her talk Edwina made a number of points that are very relevant to our Year 11 students as they begin their HSC pattern of study, these include:

• Year 12 is not about getting a HSC BUT getting one that will do something for you • Students need to commit to be full time HSC student and they will need to make choices over the

next twelve months • Students are competing against 75,000 students across the state • You make your results- all students are capable of hard work • The students HSC mark is a combination of half the assessment mark and half the exam mark • Good results occur as a result of a good assessment mark over the twelve months PLUS a good

exam mark in the HSC • Finally a small improvement in each subject can make a significant difference to the final ATAR a

student receives

Assessment planners for Term 4 went out to students this week and are also located on the Moodle site under the Curriculum tab. Students and families are advised to keep this planner and use it to plan their assessments and exams over the course of the term. Any student who knows they will be absent from an assessment in advance, needs to see me as soon as possible, so that alternative arrangements if possible can be made.

Year 8 and 9 Launch of Catholic Schools Youth Minis try Australia

This week Year 8 and 9 students were introduced to a new program we will be offering at the College next year. We were fortunate to have youth leaders from Canberra and Melbourne facilitate a retreat day for the Year 8 students. The students were introduced to the idea of youth ministry and how this class will offer them the opportunity to nurture their faith while developing skills in the area of peer to peer ministry. Year 9 students had a similar but shorter presentation with Matt de Dassel, a member of the CSO Faith Formation Team. Thank you to the teachers and students for their organisation and participation in the day’s activities. Thank you to Father James for coordinating the visit of the youth leaders from the Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Team. Students who are interested were asked to complete expressions of interest forms by today.

Vinnie’s Sleep Out

Tonight students and teachers will participate in our first Vinnie’s Sleep Out. Students from St Paul’s and MacKillop Senior College will also join us in this event. The evening activities involve creating a place to sleep, guest speakers and prayer. Hopefully it will create awareness and a sense of solidarity with those who experience sleeping out every night across our nation and in our own community. Thank you to Jasmin Ryan, our youth ministry trainee, who planned and coordinated this new initiative in our college community. Jasmin has been a Vinnies Youth Leader for several years attending Buddy Days, Kids Camps and training programs. She is a wonderful example of how our students live out the Gospel values through their service to the community.

Year 11 Reflection Day

The Year 11 students will be participating in a one day Reflection Day on November 1st at Flynn’s Beach Surf Club. As they begin their HSC year, it’s important to take time to reflect on their journey ahead. The day provides an opportunity for students to recognise their individual giftedness, the support of the community at St Joseph Regional College and the comfort in being a part of a faith community. Further information will be given to students as the day approaches. Thank you to Mr Bruce Smith who is planning and coordinating the Reflection Day.

Sunday 5pm Youth Mass

Our students and families are warmly welcome to the St Agnes Parish Youth Mass at 5pm each Sunday evening. Following the mass there are activities that take place at the HUB.

Congratulations to Tyla Avery who submitted her business plan into the Newcastle University Business School Business Plan Challenge. Tyla's entry was deemed to be in the top 20 submissions in the state which is a fantastic effort as there were over 300 submissions from across NSW.

YEAR 12 COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES

Year 12 Community and Family Studies are undergoing an Independent Research Project for their first assessment task. Projects are on current social topics and selected by the individual student. The HSC students are required to gain data from groups of people that are relevant to their topic. Students at St Josephs’ may be asked to complete anonymous surveys or questionnaires in regards to opinions and experiences. All topics have been approved by the CAFS teachers involved. If you have any concerns or don’t wish your child to participate, please don’t hesitate to contact the school on 5525 4100 or email: [email protected]

YEAR 7 & 8 GIFTED PROGRAMS This term a number of Year 7 & 8 students have been participating in gifted programs on Thursdays with Mr Burnett. The three groups have been working on different projects:

• Geography - "damocracy" project on stakeholder groups responding to a hypothetical dam being built on the Hastings River

• English - Sci Fi/Horror project including writing a text as a group and analysing other texts in the genre

• Science - a range of mini projects based on class topics such as space and chemistry Soon we will invite parents and classroom teachers to a special session in Week 7 to hear about the students' projects. So far it has been a great opportunity to extend the students' in-class learning and build their collaboration, critical thinking and creativity skills. James Burnett, Gifted Programs Coordinator

NATIONAL BANDANNA DAY

Last Friday was National Bandanna Day, the major fundraiser for the national organisation CanTeen. CanTeen supports young people aged 12-24 living with cancer and offers support to those young people who have a mother, father, brother or sister who are bereaved or who still deal with cancer. Our College community managed to raise $1117.95, which is an outstanding effort. A massive thank you to all those who got behind the cause and bought a bandanna or a pen.

MATHS VAULT PROBLEMS Mathew is participating in a school fundraiser by selling cakes and lollies. He sold 4 packets of cakes and 2 packets of lollies and collected a total of $12.80. If the price of a packet of cakes is double the price of a packet of lollies, what is the cost of each packet of cakes?

Messages from Catholic Schools Parent Assembly Supporting Families

Dear Parents and Carers, We have some families in our school community that are currently facing some significantly challenging medical hardships. We are trying to support these families through these difficult times by providing meals to help ease the burden. Donations of meals ie: casseroles etc would be warmly received and greatly appreciated. These care packages will be delivered to our families regularly to provide continued support and let them know they are in our thoughts. If you could find some time to help, please label your meals with ingredients and deliver them to the school office.

A big thankyou to the parents who have already contributed, your generosity was accepted with great appreciation and smiles ☺

Thanking you in advance for your support.

YEAR 11 - Young People and Risk Taking

Young Drivers aged 17-25 years. Why are they at risk?

Facts: 1. Road crashes are one of the leading causes of injury, disability and death among young people. 2. Young drivers are over-represented in road crashes compared to other age groups especially young males. 3. Drivers in rural areas experience a higher rate of fatalities than those from urban areas. 4. Speeding is the major cause of road crashes in NSW and crashes which involve speeding are more likely to result in

fatal crashes. 5. Other high-risk behaviours that significantly contribute to road crashes and injuries include:

• Drink driving

• Driver fatigue and distraction

• Not using seat belts

Driver inexperience: Often young drivers don’t realise that it takes time and lots of practice to develop safe driving skills.

Developing brain: Parts of the brain responsible for self-control and for recognising and managing hazards do not fully mature until after the teenage years, so young drivers are more likely to experiment and take dangerous risks.

Overconfidence and risk taking: Young drivers can be over confident about their driving ability and underestimate dangers on the road.

Having friends as passengers: Young drivers may be distracted by passengers or may feel pressured to take risks, such as speeding. Every extra peer passenger carried by a young driver increases the chance of crashing.

Alcohol and other drugs: Young people often do not understand that alcohol and other drugs affect a driver’s skills, mood and most importantly behaviour. Safe driving requires clear judgement, concentration and ability to react to what’s happening on the road.

Busy lifestyles: Work, sport and study often mean busy lifestyles for young people, which may cause them to drive when tired – especially late at night. Driving tired significantly impairs driving, even if the driver doesn’t feel sleepy.

The RRISK program aims to increase awareness of these risk factors and how to improve road safety. For more information about the RRISK program and risk taking, visit our website www.rrisk.com.au
