COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

DIGITAL EDUCATION IN ST AGNES’ PARISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS (SAPPS) One of the many challenges facing schools of the 21st century is finding the best, affordable ways to take advantage of digital technology to enhance teaching and learning. Digital technology has transformed the way we research, present and teach educational content. For students to excel in their personal and future professional lives they need to be able to access and use the technologies available. It is now generally agreed that it is best practice for students to have access to their own digital device. Over the past five years or so we have been implementing a 1 to 1 policy with the assistance of the Digital Education Revolution (DER) which provided funding for devices for students in Years 9-12. When the Digital Education Revolution program ceased, schools faced new challenges. They had a choice to go back to computer laboratories or to continue with a 1 to 1 program. Our Catholic secondary schools had already embraced 21st century learning and decided that we needed to continue with a 1 to 1 program to take advantage of digital technology in teaching and learning. As DER funding was only for students in Years 9-12, we had to make a decision about the best affordable device for Year 7 and 8 students. After visiting schools in capital cities and doing other research, we decided that an iPad was the best option for junior secondary students. Over the last two years students enrolling in Year 7 have been required to bring their own iPad. This means that all Year 7 and 8 students now have an iPad for school use. The last of the government’s DER money was used to provide our current Year 10 students with a laptop at St Paul’s and an iPad at St Joseph’s Regional. They received these devices with the assistance of a parent levy. At this stage, all students in Years 10-12 have either a DER sponsored laptop or ‘bring their own’ device. All Year 7 and 8 students have their own iPad. In the absence of further DER funding we considered asking parents to provide our current Year 9 with a “bring-your-own” device. Because of the cost to families and rapidly changing technology, we decided to delay that requirement for current Year 9 students. Our schools still maintain Computer Laboratories and have banks of computers in Libraries. During this interim period Year 9 classes have priority for access to these school based computers for their research and learning. The current Year 9 students will be required to bring their own device from the start of 2015. By delaying the requirement for Year 9 to have their own device from the start of Year 10, families can take advantage of the preferred three year warranty on laptops. Further information on what type of device will be advised at a later date. Despite the challenges that digital technology brings, we as educators believe that we must embrace this technology and make use of it to ensure that students are engaged in their learning and are well prepared to live, work and continue to learn in the 21st century. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

YEAR 10 RETREAT PROGRAM I have had the privilege last week of spending a good deal of time with both of our Year 10 groups who have been on Retreat at Camp Obadiah and Bonny Hills. Retreats offer young people an opportunity to take a break from the hurly-burly associated with our busy lives offering time for them to contemplate their relationships; with self, others and God. I believe it is important for young people to begin to ask themselves the key question of “What does God have to do with all of this?” in their lives. Next week Mrs Helen Gilbert (Assistant Leader of School Evangelisation) will report on the students’ experiences. However, I would like to make special mention of the SJRC staff who gave up their own personal time with families to be with our Year 10 students. Congratulations to:

Mrs Helen Gilbert, Mrs Cath Eichmann and Mr Frank Johnston who facilitated the retreats, along with Mrs Nicole Prior, Mr Mitch Robins, Miss Amy Chaloner, Mrs Tobi Harris, Mrs Debbie Hill, Mr Michael Morson, Mr Colin Mackay, Mr Bruce Smith, Mr Chris Delaney, Ms Sonia West, Mrs Lisa Mahon, Mrs Hannah O’Brien, Mr Daniel O’Mullane, Mr Paul Redfern, Mr Kim Eichmann, Miss Jessica Wright, Mrs Penny McKee, Mrs Kelly Biddle, Mr Michael Walsh, Mr Richard Battiston, Mr Matt Cato, Mr John Rossington and Mr Jeremy Buckley. PRINCIPAL AWARDS Congratulations to the following students who received a College Principal’s Award at this week’s assembly. Oxley students and also Year 10 students who were away on retreat will receive their award at the coming assembly.

LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR COMPETITION Last weekend Sam Turner participated in the Regional final of the Lions Youth of the Year Competition in Taree. Sam spoke eloquently about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its place in Contemporary Australian Society. Sam spoke about plight of many of Australia’s Indigenous Communities and the asylum seeker story in our current time. Sam was an excellent ambassador for St Joseph’s Regional College; and indeed Catholic Education as a whole. Congratulations, Sam. BULLYING: NO WAY! As Catholic schools we are committed to developing school communities where every student feels safe and cared for pastorally. Bullying is something that clearly undermines our efforts to create a safe, caring environment. The anti-bullying policies clearly spell out expectations and procedures. Of particular concern at this time is any form of bullying involving social media and that which targets those involved in any form of church ministry. Friday, 21st March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Parents and students are encouraged to visit the “Bullying No Way” website www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to learn more about ways that can reduce bullying in our schools. Students with iPhones or iPads are encouraged to download the free App. “Take a Stand”. We are determined to continually work together to make our schools free of bullying.

God Bless Jim Dempsey College Principal

Prayer for Lent

So many people are hungry, Lord So many people suffer loneliness. So many of my brothers and sisters suffer sickness and disease. So many countries are torn apart by war and hate. I can help them Lord during this time of Lent by living as a better Christian! Give me a generous heart Lord and the courage to help others through prayer, thoughts and deeds. This I ask for Jesus’s sake. Amen Ms Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and Evangelisation

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register is hosted by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and is supported by Vision Australia and Guide Dogs. It is the first national register of children in Australia with vision impairment. The Register has been collecting data since 2009, and this data is providing important information about the types of eye disease

and vision disorders children have and the support they need. The data is also used by service providers and researchers. Data is stored securely and no child can be identified in any way when the data is released.

Families are invited to register their child (aged 0-18 years) if they have vision impairment in both eyes which has been diagnosed by an eye specialist or ophthalmologist. Registration can be completed by contacting Register staff on (02) 9872 0303, or by visiting the VI Family Network website at: www.vifamilynetwork.org.au. The website also provides information on eyes and vision; family support; education and related issues; braille and low vision aids; technology supporting vision impairment; newsletters from Australian low vision agencies and support groups, useful websites; and news and events that might interest families across Australia.

LIBRARY NEWS St Patrick’s Day This week we celebrated St Patrick’s Day in the Library with an awesome display of Irish poetry, fiction, literature, travel etc. We also conducted a word-search based on St Patrick and Ireland, and Chloe White was the first student to complete the exercise successfully. Well done Chloe – we hope you enjoy your iTunes voucher. Term 1 Photography Competition – My Town In 2013, we conducted three separate photography competitions across the year, and they were all very popular and attracted some exceptional entries. This term, our photography competition is themed ‘My Town’, and we already have some great, artistic entries. All of these are displayed in a gallery in the Library, and uploaded to the St Joseph’s Regional College Library FaceBook page. The competition closes on Friday 11 April (the last day of term), and the judges then start on the difficult task of selecting a winner. First prize will be a canvas print of the first-placegetter’s photograph, and there will also be minor prizes. This week, take a look at Andrew Hyde’s fluid and moody entry.

Naomi Langley - NSW Schoolgirls Head of the River Last weekend Naomi Langley competed at the NSW Schoolgirls Head of the River Rowing Regatta at Penrith. This is the most prestigious schoolgirls regatta on the calendar with girls competing from all over the state and the ACT. Naomi competed in the Year 9 100m Single Skull. In her heat she placed second in a time of 5.03.13s just 3.80s behind first place, qualifying her for the final. In the final which was held later in the day she also placed second just 8.45s behind the winner giving her a silver medal. Congratulations Naomi, on an outstanding effort. What makes it even more outstanding is that she achieved her second with borrowed gear (boat and oars). Naomi is the first athlete from SJRC to compete in this event and therefore also the first to gain a medal.
