COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT ST AGNES’ PARISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS (SAPSS) THEME FOR 2014 We have chosen WITNESS as the theme for our Catholic secondary schools for 2014. Witness is one of the five foundational practices upon which Catholic education in this Parish and in the Diocese of Lismore, is built. The other four are evangelisation, worship, community and service. As disciples or followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be His witnesses ‘in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria and to the end of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). As witnesses we have to role model the values He taught us as a blueprint for living a Christian life. The SAPSS prayer, which staff and students recite at assemblies and on other formal occasions, reminds us of the key Gospel values we strive to model in our lives. In the prayer we pray for guidance ‘to speak and act with justice and kindness and to treat others with respect’. We pray that we may ‘live in harmony’ and ‘work in partnership’ with each other. We also pray that we may be caring, faithful and forgiving and that we may learn the value of work, discipline and striving for excellence’. One of the most underrated of these Gospel values in our self-indulgent world is that of KINDNESS. Jesus demonstrated kindness time and time again during his public ministry. He went out of his way to forgive sinners, to cure the sick, lame and blind, to welcome little children, to feed the hungry and so on. Time magazine named Pope Francis as ‘the Person of the Year’ for 2013. What made Pope Francis stand out was his kindness, gentleness and humility according to Sydney Morning Herald columnist Julia Baird (December 21st-22nd). The Pope demonstrated this “when he embraced a man with a disfigured face, washed the feet of female prisoners, visited the homeless in disguise and warned against judgment edging out love”. Julia Baird goes on to argue that we may not agree on lots of things, but kindness is something that binds us – as Mark Twain said, it is ‘the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see’. There is now powerful research to demonstrate the benefits of kindness. These show that:

• a single act of kindness can trigger dozens more; • repetitive acts of kindness make people happier and less depressed; and • just thinking about kindness can rewire our brains to see the entirety of life and not just the

negative.

The challenge is for each of us to witness or role model KINDNESS in our lives at home, at school and in our workplaces. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome to our new Ministry Trainees

Last weekend, we welcomed back our Parish Youth Ministry Worker, Ellen Hales, after her amazing trek up Mount Kilimanjaro with a team of young people from across the world to raise funds for Kenyan charities. This year, Ellen and our Parish Youth Ministry endeavours will be supported by a team of four Youth Ministry Officers based at each secondary school campus.

We welcome Stephanie Figgins - a local active young person and 2013 graduate of St Joseph’s Regional College, Amy Webb - with years of school and parish ministry experience from Canberra, Brad Vergano - from Castle Hill in Sydney who is two years into a teaching degree, and Anna Cusack - who launched a very successful youth group in Pambula-Merimbula Parish.

This year we look forward to working with our Youth Ministry Trainees in the College.

College Swimming Carnival This week the College community gathered for our annual swimming carnival. Aside from being so well-attended, it was wonderful to see our students supporting their House in such a spirited fashion. I would like to personally thank Manager of the Port Macquarie Pool, Mr Michael Mullens, and his wife Cindy for providing such a well-prepared and welcoming facility on the day. Once again, our Sports Coordinator, Mr Michael Cannon had the carnival run like clockwork and to all College staff who collectively supported the day in their various roles. In particular, I would like to give a special thank you to our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students who catered for the day and their supervising teaching and support staff.

Congratulations goes to Oxley House for their most convincing win on the day. Senior students from Oxley did a fantastic job in leading junior students.

I would like to congratulate the following Champions and Runners Up on the Day.

YEAR 7 PARENT-TEACHER MEET AND GREET EVENING

On Monday, 24th February the College will be holding the annual Year 7 Parent-Teacher Meet and Greet Evening from 4.00pm – 7.00pm. This night provides parents the opportunity to have a five minute meeting with each of their child's teachers, as well as have a BBQ dinner with other staff and parents. Students are encouraged to attend the evening with their parents. A separate note has been sent home today outlining how to book interviews with each of your child's teachers.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Year 7 Religious Education This is an exciting time for the Year 7 students as they begin their journey into high school. The first unit in RE: What it Means to Be Catholic should assist your child with settling into our college community and St Agnes’ Parish. Parents can become familiar with the program by going to our Moodle site. The textbook and Understanding Faith Resource is also available on the site.

During this term we will also have a Year 7 Reflection Day and a parent /student liturgy. For some parents, it’s a great opportunity to refresh our own understanding of what it means to be Catholic and to look at our own faith commitment. We have copies available of a book called “So You’re Sending Your Child to a Catholic School” for those families who are new to catholic schools. We will have it available at the Year 7 evening. Community Service This year again, we are encouraging students in all year groups to participate in some type of community service. This program is outlined in the diary in the blue pages 19-21. There are student representatives being chosen in each Pastoral Care class that will be highlighting opportunities for students on a regular base. If anyone knows of ways we can help out in the community, please contact the school. Sacramental Program We are in the process of gathering names of any students who may have missed out on receiving one of the sacraments in their primary years and would like to do so this year. We will meet these students individually or in small groups to provide instruction and preparation to receive the sacraments. Students can leave their names at the front office.

Other upcoming events at The Youth Hub include: ‘The Black and White Party’

Friday, 21st February Live bands, great food and good friends

FROM THE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR YEAR 7-12 ASSESSMENTS Students in Years 7-12 will be given their Term 1 assessment planners over the next few days. It is important that students check their planners to see when each task is due and start on each assignment as soon as possible. If you know in advance that you will be absent from school when a task is due then you should contact me as soon as possible at the College. A further reminder that if a student misses an assessment task they need to contact the College and see me at school at 8.45am the very first day they arrive back at school. YEAR 10 INFORMATION NIGHT- Wednesday 19th February 6.00pm in the College Hall An information night for Year 10 will be held this Wednesday evening at 6.00pm in the College Hall. The focus of the evening will be to provide information to students and their parents/guardians to assist you when making critical choices that will affect the next three years of schooling.

There will be a specific focus on careers planning as well as an outline of the procedures that will affect the subject selection that students will make as part of their entry into senior school. At the end of the night, light refreshments will be available and you will have an opportunity to talk to the subject coordinators about any areas of interest you may have.

Finally, in this critical year it is expected that all Year 10 students and a parent or guardian attend this evening. If you would like any further details about this night or the options available to students please feel free to contact me at the College.

Mr Ian Lutton Leader of Curriculum

ST AGNES’ PARISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ YEAR BOOK The St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools Yearbook is a wonderful record of the year that has passed and great to have as a reference well beyond one’s school years. Families who had a son or daughter in Year 12, 2013 are asked to call at the office to collect their year book please. Students in Years 8 have already received their copy. Year books can be purchased through the College office for just $20.00.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION 2014 As our student intake increases at St Joseph’s Regional College, it has become evident that there is a need for the College to be more cost and environmentally efficient in the distribution of the newsletter. Therefore, the College newsletter will be emailed to all families. We understand that for some families this is not always the most convenient way of receiving the newsletter, therefore, hardcopies will be available for students to collect each Friday from the College canteen. The newsletter is available for viewing on the College website. http://www.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au/

Year 9 Canberra Trip - Monday, 23rd – Thursday, 26th June 2014

Year 9 Canberra Trip 2014 is on Monday, 23rd – Thursday, 26th June which is the last week of Term 2. The excursion in addition to it's social, cultural and entertainment outcomes is an important part of our Year 9 History course as well as fulfilling Board of Studies requirements for a site study in this case the Australian War Memorial.

We realise the excursion is a substantial additional cost and for this reason we are advising parents in advance. The final cost and note will come home in the next couple of weeks. Parents will be able to make part payments prior to the excursion.

Europe Study Tour, January 2015

Calling for expressions of interest Dear Parent/Student, St Joseph’s Regional College and Mackillop College are considering running a joint study tour to Europe for students (open to all Year 11 and 12 students and selected Year 10 students) and interested family members in January 2015, visiting Rome, the Bay of Naples, the Western Front and Paris. The tour visits a number of sites directly relevant to core studies in the HSC subjects of both Ancient History and Modern History. The trip would also be of interest to students with an interest in art and in practicing the use of the French language. We are intending to run this tour with Academy Travel, an Australian-based company specialising in school group tours. Working closely with staff at the school, they will develop and manage a program specifically designed for our students. The first step in getting the tour off the ground is to gauge the level of serious interest among students and their family members before we organise an information evening to provide further information and to answer questions. The details of this information evening are: Date/Time: 6pm on Wednesday, 26th Venue: St Joseph’s Regional College PAC Please read through the attached flyer, particularly the sections on cost and inclusions. If you genuinely believe you are prepared to support such a financial commitment towards your child’s education and would therefore be interested in finding out more please contact Mr Warneken. Kind regards Jason Warneken Organising Teacher, St Joseph’ Regional College

The school will be updating its records shortly for students with medical conditions. With respect to students who may be diabetics, epileptics or may suffer from other serious medical conditions, the school keeps a record in the staffroom of the student and intervention required in the event that immediate action is required whilst at school. In respect of other medical conditions we also keep a computer record for reference as required. We would ask that parents please notify the school of the following:-

1. If your son/daughter has a medical condition that you believe may require intervention at school, please provide written details to the College office at Regional College.

2014 SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last Tuesday, we held our annual swimming carnival at the Port Macquarie Olympic Pool. It was our biggest Carnival in the school's history with over 860 students in attendance. With so many students it put added pressure on our staff to run the program as efficiently as possible and they were definitely up to the challenge. We managed to get all freestyle, breastroke, backstroke and butterfly events completed before lunch. Students were entertained during the lunch break with our traditional belly flop competition. The afternoon was made up of house relay events in each age group followed by presentation of age champions and winning house. Congratulations to Oxley House on defending their title and also to those students who have gained a place in the Regional Swim Squad to compete in Tweed Heads. Names will be announced soon. ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE ROWING TEAM Last weekend, 8th and 9th February the College Rowing team competed in a regatta at Berry Park on the Hunter River near Newcastle. Saturday was the Newcastle Grammar School regatta, we had an exciting day with some very competitive rowing, gaining several 2nd and 3rd placing. Mary Shelley took out the Women’s Under 17 Years 1750m event. On Sunday, we were part of the Endeavour Rowing Club regatta, it was another hot day but that did not deter the team from putting in an excellent effort. Lily Howard and Naomi Langley took out the Women’s Under 16 Double Scull over 1000m. The team had some very close 2nd places with Naomi Langley, Mary Shelley and Bryce Gardner took out their respective age division singles.

Overall, the weekend was very enjoyable for all involved and many thanks go to the great supportive parent group that worked so hard to ensure all boats were prepared and on the water in time for races, Special thanks to our coaches Alan McCarthy and Mick Watts and also to our organiser Amanda Lulham who always puts in a magnificent effort. Any student interested in joining the team should contact Mr Phill Shelley.
