COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

HINTS FROM EX-STUDENTS Over the past couple of weeks ex-students who excelled in the 2012 HSC have been invited back to their former schools to be congratulated and to share some advice on what helped them achieve outstanding HSC results. Mr McCosker summarised the following main themes from MacKillop Senior College ex-students: 1. FOCUS ON THE TASK The HSC comes along very quickly so you need to make use of your time – you need to FOCUS

and WORK HARD

2. ENJOY THE JOURNEY Gaining a good HSC result involves hard work, but you must also get involved in a variety of

activities on offer and enjoy yourself along the way.

3. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF It is important for students to look after their physical and mental health along the way. Good eating

habits and regular exercise are essential.

4. DO YOUR BEST Your best may be an ATAR of 99 or 60 – don’t leave school knowing you could have done better.

5. FIND A BALANCE While Years 11 and 12 involve plenty of school work, it is essential to balance this with a range of

other activities e.g. sleep, social events, sport, etc.

6. PACE YOURSELF One student compared Year 12 to an endurance race – a great analogy. Don’t burn out early –

make sure you are still fit and enthusiastic for Trial and HSC exams.

Ex-students from St Joseph’s Regional College covered much of the same advice but also mentioned: • Block Facebook as it can be a great time waster. You will find out all you need to know from friends at school

• Choose the subject you like not the ones you think will get you the most marks.

• Write, write, write because all your HSC exams are hand written. If you don’t practice writing you will not be able to write for three hours during HSC examinations.

• Do lots of practice papers then you will find the actual HSC exams familiar and easy.

• Your teachers are your best resource , “cheesy as that sounds”! Make good use of them throughout the year.

• Exercise, hot showers and dark chocolate are excellent for clearing the head and de- stressing.

• You are not alone , work with friends, help each other and send the occasional motivational text. I am sure you will agree there is some very good advice here for all students and especially for those in their senior years.

YOUTH HUB OPENED Father Donnelly has spent over forty years implementing his vision of ‘womb to tomb’ care for the Port Macquarie community. He established St Joseph’s Pre-School in the early 1970s soon after he arrived and Lourdes Nursing Home around the same time. He has progressively developed services for groups of people of all ages in between. In addition to a first class primary and secondary education system, he has developed services for the homeless, youth in crisis, the unemployed and the disabled. His earlier attempt to develop a partnership with PCYC was not successful leaving a gap in services for the youth of our community. That need has now been addressed by the opening last Saturday of the Youth Hub in Horton Street on the old Southern Cross University site recently purchased and developed by the Parish. This $2.5 million project has been substantially funded by the Parish. A grant of $250,000 was received from a Diocesan trust, $55,000 from the State Government under the ‘Community Building Projects Grants’ and a $10,000 grant from the Council for equipment. The Hub is managed by Mr Michael Gilmore who will be assisted by a team of volunteers. Students are encouraged to join the Hub and make good use of the facilities and services on offer. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

ASH WEDNESDAY CEREMONY AND THE LAUNCH OF PROJECT CO MPASSION Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the forty days of Lent leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter. Lent is a special time of preparation in the Church Year, for it is a time for us to Stop, Listen and Reflect on whom we are and on who God calls us to become. It is a time to admit we are not perfect and can improve in our relationship with God and each other. During the liturgy ashes were placed on our foreheads to signify our belief that God can bring hope, peace and love where there is none. When placed on the forehead, the distributor of ashes said, “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” to which we responded, “Amen” This Rite in the church reminds us of our own human frailty and the need for to place our faith in God to assist us in life’s journey. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Helen Gilbert (Leader of Evangelisation) for putting together such a meaningful liturgy and Mr Richard Battiston (Leader of Innes House) who coordinated our special gathering. Congratulations to our School Captains, Andrew Newbound and Ashleigh Hales who led the liturgy, along with Senior Leaders, Tiarne Semchshyn, Sephanie Giggins, Eamon Shannon and James Dick who assisted Mrs Swain (REC: Leader of Catechesis) Mr Sean Jennings, Mr Michael Morson and myself in the distribution of ashes. Thank you to all St Joseph’s Regional students who were so reverent and respectful in their response to the liturgy. Mrs Nora Swain Mr Richard Battison Mrs Helen Gilbert

9:30 am

I would now ask Mrs Swain to add further comment to the significance of the Lenten season. This year’s theme is: Open Doors into the Future. The season of Lent invites us into a time of reflection, transformation and conversion as we step into the future. Supporting the initiatives of Caritas through Project Compassion is a step towards improving the living conditions and opening doors in disadvantaged communities in Australia and throughout the world. There will be activities throughout the Lenten season in our school community to support Project Compassion. The Caritas website has some interesting stories and descriptions of the various projects they support. Back to Mr Dempsey INAUGURAL MASS Finally I would like to invite you (Parents and Families) to our Inaugural Mass on Wednesday February 27th in our College hall at 9.30 am

STRONG STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT ST JOSEPH’S REGIONAL COLLEGE In this modern age much emphasis is placed on schools spending considerable amounts of money on advertising to promote their school. While advertising is a great way to celebrate school achievement, we sometimes can underestimate the influence our students can have on shaping the reputation of their school. Below are a few invaluable examples of school promotion by our students over the past week. Congratulations to all involved. OPENING OF THE PORT MACQUARIE YOUTH HUB As Mr Jim O’Brien has already mentioned, last Saturday St Agnes Parish celebrated the opening of the Port Macquarie Youth Hub with much fanfare. I would like to pay tribute to our senior students who represented St Joseph’s Regional College on the day. Firstly, all credit to our School Captain, Andrew Newbound and House Prefect Sami Bayley. I felt very proud sitting with these great young ambassadors for our school. Additionally, I would like to make special mention of James Dick, also a Senior House Prefect at St Joseph’s Regional College, and volunteer of the Youth Hub. James did a fantastic job giving a formal address at the official opening ceremony: I invite you to read James’s speech below:

Page 5: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 15th February 2013

Good morning everyone, my name is James Dick, and I’m a member of the St Joseph’s Regional College SRC and a volunteer here at the hub. Both as a teenager, and a student of a St Agnes Parish school, I’ve seen first-hand, that the Port Macquarie Youth Hub has given something special, that the young people of Port Macquarie have never had access to before.

It will provide a relaxed welcoming environment whether you’re doing some study, engaging in some activities or classes, going to the gym, going to a concert or (my personal favourite) just veg’ing out upstairs and playing some pool. This kind of concept has never been provided as an opportunity before, and I think I speak for a lot of the young people in Port Macquarie when I say I’m eager and excited to think about the possibilities the Hub represents, and will offer in the future.

The prospect of having a place designed specifically for the youth of the town, is one that I believe has been severely in need for a long time and will help to reinforce a strong sense of community within the youth of the town. Of course, none of this would be possible without the unwavering assistance and support of Father Donnelly, the rest of the church clergy and Parish community, and all the volunteers and workers involved, we thank you so much for your time and effort and just wanted to let you know that we are extremely thankful for all your hard work and dedication, and it is sincerely appreciated. Thank you.

What a great little speech from a man so young. I would like also thank the many St Joseph’s Regional College staff members who attended the opening. To Mrs Cath Eichmann, Mr Bruce Smith , Mrs Heidi Flanagan, Mr Ian Lutton , Mr Chris Kalchbauer , Mrs Helen Gilbert and Trainees Ms Jasmine Ryan and Mr Wanambi Conor .

The Youth Hub is certainly an exciting new initiative and will provide many wonderful opportunities for our students. Tonight from 4.00-7.00pm is the first youth group gathering. The group is called Energize and is for students from year 7 and upwards. They meet every second Friday evening at the Hub. SJRC ROWING TEAM Tremendous Ambassadors for St Joseph’s Regional College and a special thank you to Coordinator of the Rowing Program, Mr Alan McCartney This week as I sat penning the newsletter, Mr Nathan Gargiulo forwarded an email to me regarding St Joseph’s Regional Rowing Team’s performance both “on and off’ the water last weekend. The letter was from a parent from a competing school at the regatta.

Kirra Trotman & Mary Shelley

To the Staff and Students of St Joseph’s Regional College

As a parent I have been involved with my son (member of Newcastle Rowing Club) over the past two regatta’s at Taree and Morpeth which Regional College have participated. I would just like to congratulate the school and all involved in the rowing program for the way they have conducted themselves on and off the water.

The support the parents and kids have shown to their own competitors and others, the behaviour of the kids (and parents), the professional way the school presents itself (uniforms, tents etc) and the overall image the rowing program is presenting for the school to the wider community is to be congratulated. To all those involved in developing and fostering rowing at the school, and the students who are competing, well done, you should be proud of what you have achieved, and the atmosphere you have created through the rowing program.

Regards Mr John Searl (Parent: Hunter Grammar)

ONSTAGE 2013 Last Wednesday our wonderful Drama students had the opportunity to travel to see the best of the HSC Drama projects and performances from 2012 at OnStage in Sydney. While it is a long day the students certainly benefit from the discussion and critical evaluation that takes place after viewing these works. This year we were also fortunate enough to be able to see the Design work of ex-student Bernadette Fingleton. Our thoughts and prayers are with our 2013 HSC cohort as they take the knowledge they have gained from seeing the pinnacle of HSC performances and projects to prepare for their practical assessment of HSC Drama. DONATIONS The Art department would greatly appreciate donations of old clean towels, magazines, newspapers and old bed sheets for student projects. DRAMARAMA IS BACK! Wednesday afternoon at 3:30pm! The first go is free so you guys can check it out and see if you like it, it will be $5 a week after that. If you have any questions at all come see Jade Meddemmen at the staff room.
