COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

NEW PRINCIPAL OF ST JOSEPH’S REGIONAL COLLEGE On Monday Father Donnelly announced that Jim Dempsey will be the new principal of St Joseph’s Regional College, commencing in 2013. Jim was appointed as the result of a process that involved a national advertisement, short listing and interviews. Jim was educated at St John’s College, Woodlawn and completed a BA and Diploma of Education at the University of New England. He has subsequently completed a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education. In 1993 and 1994 Jim taught at MacKillop Senior College before moving to St Joseph’s Vocational College (now Newman Senior Technical College) and was the Assistant Campus Principal at the College until 2005. Jim moved to Taree in 2006 to establish the Manning Valley Campus of the Australian Technical College before taking up an appointment in 2009 at St Clare’s High School in Taree, a Year 7-12 Co-educational Catholic College. We look forward to welcoming Jim back to Port Macquarie in 2013 with his wife Barb and their two teenage sons, Shamus and Finton. Jim replaces Anne O’Brien who has taken up an appointment with the Catholic Schools Office working as an education consultant assisting teachers and schools in Religious Education and in the spiritual formation of students.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

END OF YEAR PROGRAM

In an effort to keep students in the junior secondary school engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2 examinations are in Week 10, that is, the first week of December. These dates have been advertised in the parent calendar and in the newsletter this term. This will mean that there will be a couple of non-class days for students to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, prepare reports and awards. Research confirms the importance of feedback from teachers for effective student learning so we will have students return to school to review exam papers, receive reports and attend academic award ceremonies. On Friday, 21st December the last day of Term 4, staff will be available by appointment for parent/teacher interviews.

I know that many parents have suggested having exams at this later time and will welcome this program for the end of the year. Supervision will be available for any student whose parent is not able to supervise them at home during the non-class days. This was trailed last year and we found it to be very successful as students were on task for longer and we made best use of the teaching and learning time in term 4.

SRC RESPONSIBILITIES • attend fortnightly SRC meetings. • report back at Assembly/House meetings. • publicise all minutes to staff and students on back of College morning notices and SRC

noticeboard. • write articles in the College newsletter in order to keep students and parents up-to-date with

SRC activities. • organise social and fundraising activities within the school and attend and participate in these

functions. • manage the financial budget of the SRC. • be role models for the rest of the school with respect to behaviour, dress and courtesy by

adhering to all school rules. • be available to attend all functions both within and outside of school hours eg. Anzac March,

Parish morning tea. • when occasion arises Captains and/or House Prefects will report/liaise/discuss issues that need

to be addressed with Principal/College Leadership Team/Staff. FEES Sincere thanks to all parents who have finalised their school fees with the parish and their student fees with the College secretaries. We aim to have all our finances up to date as the term ends and in order for this to happen we need parents to settle their accounts.

An account will be sent out next week listing any outstanding fees. I ask that all parents attend to this matter within the timeframe stated. Unfortunately any student who does not pay fees and return all library books will not receive their report. Certainly an awful position to be in. Any family who is having difficulty is asked to contact me at school immediately please.

2013 ENROLMENTS We currently have a large number of families on waiting lists for enrolments into each of the Year groups. In order to offer places it is essential that the school knows if any students will not be continuing here next year. If your son or daughter will not be continuing at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2013, please advise the school office in writing as soon as possible.

On Monday the 5th November Lesley Williams visited the College to acknowledge the College’s success with regard to the work that the Learning Support Team do with the children in their care.

Today she presented us with a cheque for $2500 so that we can introduce an Eco Schools Program that will involve our Work Education students organising recycling and composting green waste in the food technology department, canteen and staff lunch room.

I would like to acknowledge Mrs Rhonda Worthing who wrote the submission and wish the Work Education students all the best as they implement the program in 2013. Janine Handley Learning Enrichment Coordinator

SCIENCE MATTERS

The Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) test for Year 8 students will be held on Tuesday 13 November 2012 . The test takes approximately 80 minutes with it being an interactive, multimedia test completed entirely on a computer. All the year 8 students have completed the practice test and are familiar with the process. Since students complete ESSA online on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an iPod or portable player are suitable. These will be collected prior to the test by teachers and held until the test day. If you have any questions regarding the test please feel free to contact either myself or your child’s Science Teacher. Damian Bennie Science Coordinator

REGIONAL COLLEGE SPORTS WRAP

DIOCESAN TENNIS REPORT The Senior boys pairings of Lachlan Hunt and Lachlan Hudson and Chris Treeves and Toby Dowton were competitive and won a number of games. Particular credit to Lachlan hunt from year 7 who played boys up to 5 years older and handled it admirably.

All will have benefitted from the experience of playing older, stronger players and will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.

The junior girls, Jessica Rogers and Holly Fife were also competitive but again gave away age and experience to their competitors. The girls had some strong games but will also benefit from the experience and should be a strong junior team next year.
