COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE BULLYING: NO WAY!

As Catholic schools we are committed to developing school communities where every student feels safe and cared for pastorally.

Bullying is something that clearly undermines our efforts to create a safe, caring environment.

The anti-bullying policies clearly spell out expectations and procedures. Of particular concern at this time is any form of bullying involving social media and that which targets those involved in any form of church ministry.

Friday, 15th March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Parents and students are encouraged to visit the “Bullying No Way” website www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to learn more about ways that can reduce bullying in our schools. Students with iPhones or iPads are encouraged to download the free App. “Take a Stand”.

We are determined to continually work together to make our schools free of bullying.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

ST. AGNES PARISH ESTABLISHES OFFICE IN THE PORT MORESBY OFFICE TO ASSIST THE DIOCESE OF BEREINA.

The Diocese of Bereina has been through a difficult financial period over the last couple of years. With a resources boom in PNG and the DOB having a focus on the poor and needy, Bishop Rochus has had to contend with many financial and pastoral challenges in his remote Diocese in PNG. In an unprecedented move to build confidence Fr. Donnelly decided to open an office in PNG to support the Bishop in 2013 and 2014, Bishop Rochus’s Diocesan Business manager had resigned and Diocesan financial management was struggling.

As a part of this overall endeavour, St Joseph’s Regional College has assisted with the installation of Water Purification units for remote villages in the PNG. WATER PURIFICATION UNITS INSTALLED AND WORKING In 2012 for six months a team from St Joseph’s Regional College worked on and were successful with an application to the United Nations for 12 Solvatten Water purification units for remote villages in Papua New Guinea. Finally after getting the units off the wharves in Port Moresby the units have arrived in the villages.

Georgina (12yrs old) is doing the family washing while her brothers, sisters and dog look on waiting for water in unit to purify.

Thank you St Josephs’ Regional College for your efforts and getting these for us.

A special congratulations to students Jordan Gleeson and Samuel Gleeson who assisted in making this program possible.

MY VISIT TO ST JOSEPH’S SCHOOL, LAURIETON

One of the real pleasures I have as a Secondary Principal in a Regional Catholic High School is the opportunity to visit different schools in the area. This week I had the opportunity to meet the students of St Joseph’s, Laurieton. What a wonderful school and a great bunch of students! I was treated to a great Lenten prayer by Year 6 students. I also learnt very much about the talents of students from their recent Diocesan Athletics and Swimming carnivals. I would like to thank Principal of St Joseph’s, Mr Tom Critchley

for inviting me to the school for the school assembly. After Easter I will return to the school to speak to Year 6 students about their future transition to St Joseph’s Regional College. YEAR 10 RETREAT Next week Year 10 will embark on their annual Retreat. I would like to thank Mr Richard Battison for his organisation of the retreats and also much thanks to Ms Nora Swain and Mrs Helen Gilbert who have put so much work into the Retreat program. Thank you to the following staff Mr Phil Shelley, MrJeremy Buckley, Mr Ryan Moore, Mr Michael Morson, Mr Frank Johnston, Mr Amy Chaloner, Mr Kelly West, Mr Penny McKee, Mr Melissa Hickson, Mrs Bronwyn Shipton, Ms Jasmin Ryan, Mr John Rossington, Mr Nathan Garguilo, Mr Chris Kalchbauer, Mr Barry Watson, Mr Daniel O’Mullane, Mrs Nicole Prior, Mrs Tracy Pares, Ms Jessica Wright, Mrs Carla Taggert, Ms Ann-Marie Healy who are also attending the retreat. These committed people give so much of themselves and make many personal sacrifices in relation to their personal lives and families to make retreats at St Joseph’s Regional College feasible. ACKNOWLEDGING LEADERSHIP This week I would like to acknowledge St Joseph Regional Community House Leaders and finally we are now able to publish a photo of our SRC Representatives who were inducted last week. New SRC Leaders (SRC Badge Leaders) Congratulations to the following students:

• Tahnee Borg and Jamie Lightfoot (Year 11)

• Eleanor Wright and Christopher Treeves. (Year 10)

• Mary Shelley and Matthew Le (Year 9)

YEAR 8 - 12 PARENT-TEACHER NIGHT

Year 8-12 Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 27 th March 4.00pm - 7.30pm (Surnames M-W) . All parents are encouraged to attend these interviews as they are a critical contributor to your child’s success and happiness at school .

The evening provides the opportunity to meet with your child’s Pastoral Care (PC) Teacher as well as all subject teachers. It will also give you the opportunity to give teachers a brief insight into your child and their learning. Teachers will use the opportunity to let you know how your child has settled in to the 2013 school year and show you ways your child will be learning in their classroom, including how you can check their work and assist with homework and assignments.

This year the College has introduced a new on-line system for booking interviews. In order to book your interviews (5 minutes per teacher) please go to the College website www.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au and click on the Parent-Teacher interviews link.

You will need to have a copy of your child’s timetable (in their diary) with subjects and teachers names for each subject. Enter the School Event Code from the box below and then follow steps 1, 2 and 3. Please BE CAREFUL to book interviews for the correct date.

Parents that do not have access to the internet at home, at work, at a friend’s house or on their phones, may send a note to school with the approximate times they require, or phone the school on 02) 5525 4100.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Centenary Book

After many months of research and preparation, the Centenary Book is almost ready for print. This comprehensive historical document will be professionally printed and will include photos and stories of Catholic education in St Agnes’ Parish. It will include St Joseph’s Family Services and all Parish schools and will be very reasonably priced at just $20. How many books should we have printed? A very good question. We are very keen to find out how many people are interested in purchasing a copy of the Centenary Book which is anticipated to be available in May this year.

We would really appreciate your expression of interest to help us gauge the demand. All expressions of interest to Parish Administration – 6588 7444 or email: [email protected]

Thank you for your assistance.

John McQueen Director Parish Education

VMZL3

When you click finish, your interview timetable will be emailed to you automatically - check your junk mail folder if you do not receive your email immediately.

You can return to the site at any time, and change your interviews - until bookings close. Please REMEMBER to bring the email with times on it to the evening as this

will be the only way of knowing your interview times.

FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR

YEAR 7 MASS POSTPONED The Year 7 Mass has been postponed until next term. It was to be held on 21st March. We apologise for any inconvenience. The Mass now will be held on Thursday, 13th June at 6.30pm at St Agnes’ Church. We hope by having the Mass in the evening more parents are able to attend. COMMUNITY SERVICE As mentioned in previous newsletters, we encourage our students to participate in various community service projects throughout the year. The program is outlined in the diary (p19-20) and there is a page for the students to record their hours of service. This year we have introduced community service representatives in each Pastoral Care class. These students will play an important role by encouraging students to get involved and highlighting opportunities that are available in the community. Congratulations to those students who are named in Mr Jim Dempsey’s report. YEAR 10 RETREAT AND YEAR 11 REFLECTION DAY On Monday the Year 11 Reflection Day will take place and the Year 10 Retreat begins. These opportunities complement the Religious Education program and provide students with another faith experience in our school community. They are usually a highlight of the school term for staff and students. These two events involve a tremendous amount of planning and preparation. Thank you to all staff and students involved and particularly to Mrs Gilbert, Mr Battiston, and Mr Smith who are coordinating the organisation of these activities. PROJECT COMPASSION There have already been several successful fundraising events for Project Compassion and still to come are the Easter egg raffle, cupcake stall, and rice day. Individual Pastoral Care classes are also setting goals for their fundraising. Mrs Gilbert’s senior PC are aiming to raise $300 which would provide a toilet and plumbing in a needy community. They are selling tickets for a Jellybean guessing competition at lunchtime. The Caritas website provides valuable information about various projects and where funds are directed to fight poverty and injustices around the world. Thank you to everyone for your support! AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL

This festival will be held in Melbourne in December and is aiming to gather 3000 young people from around Australia. Young people from Year 9 to young adults are invited to the event. St Agnes’ Parish is intending to take a team of youth to this National Youth Event. They are asking students to show an expression of interest by obtaining information form Ms Swain and there will be a meeting Tuesday, 9th April at 7pm in the parish hall. Students who are interested are asked to see Ms Swain this week. Ms Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation

MATHS VAULT PROBLEMS Henry covers his desk using 100 post-it notes. Sally’s post-it notes are half the area of Henry’s and her desk is twice the area. How many of Sally’s post-it notes will she need to cover her desk? Last Week’s Answer: there are 11 boys in the class

FROM THE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR ASSESSMENT REMINDERS If your child is absent on the day of an assessment task you need to contact the College in the morning and your child will complete the task upon their return to school. If an assignment is due to be handed in and your child is planning to be absent from school due to an approved holiday or sporting commitment etc. the assignment needs to be submitted prior to them being absent. Year 11 and 12 students who are absent from school on the day of an exam or two days leading up to an assessment require a doctors certificate explaining their absence; they will complete their exam upon returning to school where appropriate. With the submission of assignments they need to be handed in at the College Library before 8.45am on the nominated day, penalties will apply for assignments submitted late, except in the case of a school bus arriving late. If students are worried about arriving late on the day a task is due they should submit it the day before to their teacher. Students should not run the risk of expecting to be able to print an assignment in the library on the morning of a task. Ian Lutton Leader of Curriculum

FROM THE STUDENT SERVICES ROOM The Social Bar (C10) is opened every morning from 8.30am and every lunch time. It is a room that students can attend to sit, play games or be socialising, particularly if the playground is too busy or loud for them. We do not, however, allow homework to be done on iPads or computers, the library is the place to go for this. I would also like to thank the following Year 12 students who give up their lunch break to spend some quality time with the youngsters that attend the Social Bar. Rhani Perkins, Emily Dahl, James Dick, Shakira branch, Caitlin Nevill, Elenya Dixon, tim McMillan, Jess Myers, Ashleigh Hales, Andrew Newbnound, Gemma Laurie, Tiarna Semchyshyn, Alana Macrow-Cain, Liam Wright, Sami Bailey, tori Marr-Harris, Sherah knight, Nathan ross, Rachael Nosworthy and Lexi Carrol.

Success for Claire McIntosh Congratulations to Claire McIntosh for her wonderful results in the Diocesan swimming last week. She will now represent the Lismore Diocese at State level next month Good luck Claire. Janine Handley Leader of Learning Enrichment

YEAR 9 CANBERRA EXCURSION

Plans for the annual Year 9 excursion to Canberra are well underway. The dates for the excursion are 24th - 27th June 2013 (Term 2 Week 9) The purpose of the trip is twofold. The main aim is to tie in with the HSIE (Human Society and its Environment) Curriculum and to provide students with the opportunity to experience firsthand some of Australia’s cultural and entertainment sites including:

* Australian War Memorial * Australian Institute of Sport * Anzac Parade Memorials * Questacon * Old Parliament House * AIS night activity * New Parliament House * Circular Quay/Manly Ferry * Newcastle University tour * Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge

It is also hoped that the trip will enhance the community spirit already established in Year 9, providing an opportunity for students to develop new friendships or cement old ones. The experience of independence and interdependence of living and working together as a community is invaluable. The cost of the excursion has been finalised at $390 and will cover accommodation, transport, meals (except for lunch on the trip down and dinner on the trip home) and all entry fees. The amount been billed to your school account. The first instalment of $100 is due by Monday, 25th March 2013 (Term 1, week 9) with the balance payable before Monday, 10th June (Term 2 week 7). To assist with numbers please complete the permission slip given to all Year 9 students and return note to Mr Johnston by Monday, 18th March 2013. Please note that the first instalment is a binding non-refundable commitment to attend the camp. This is to assist with covering basic costs once numbers are booked and confirmed.

If you are unable to meet this cost, please contact Mr Warneken or Mr Johnston as soon as possible. No student should miss out because of financial difficulties. As this excursion is an integral part of the HSIE curriculum and an important community building exercise, it would be extremely advantageous for your child to attend. If you have any queries or concerns regarding this excursion, please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Warneken or Mr Johnston at the College.

LIBRARY NEWS

Searching effectively in Google Students in Year 7 have been actively involved in several research tasks in the past couple of weeks, across many areas of the Curriculum. Some classes have been booked into the Library so that I can assist them in locating information, both print and non-print, and responsibly referencing their sources of information. A very useful tool for students searching in Google is available online at http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/www.google.com/en//educators/downloads/Tips_Tricks_85x11.pdf Parent Library We have a growing collection of material kindly made available to us for your use by the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Parent Assembly.

Over the next few weeks I will feature a book in this section of the newsletter and you are very welcome to borrow the book if you wish. Please contact Library staff to borrow the book.

The Princess Bitchface Syndrome : surviving adolescent girls by Michael Carr-Gregg. Dr Carr-Gregg is one of our foremost authorities on teenage behaviour specialising in parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. In this book, he focuses on the issues surrounding raising adolescent girls. This is only a short book and won’t take long to read, but its message is powerful.

#Summer Competition During the course of a year we tend to offer competitions with some great prizes. Our first term photography competition with the theme of #Summer is proving to be popular with over 50 entries already. Each week I will feature one of the entries so that you can see the calibre of our budding photographers. This week…. one of Mikaylie Gooding’s pictures takes centre stage. You can view a gallery of some of the amazing images contributed by students for this competition at the St Joseph’s Regional College Library FaceBook page.
