It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the first term for 2013 until we reflect on all that has happened this term. We started this term with parent information evenings which set the scene for each class for the year. Three very successful overnight Outdoor Education experiences were held for our room 7 & 8s, our Room 5 & 6s and Room 4. Our junior classes also had a very successful Education Outside The Classroom experiences, visiting the Rocky Shore and the Opihi river. Two weeks of swimming highlighted for us the importance of a school swimming programme, with the rate of improvement and skill development evident with daily lessons over this time. The way this programme is delivered may change in the future with the prospect of some subsidised funding for Year 3-6 students to have access to 10 lessons with a skilled swimming instructor. A lovely celebration was held for St Joseph’s Day with our School Mass. Students have experienced success at the Milo Girls’ and Boys’ Cricket and the South Canterbury Swimming sports. Alongside this, classes are into routines of learning and great things happen on a daily basis in the classroom. Over the last few weeks students have shared their learning goals with parents. Some classes are sharing these in Ultranet. Next term all students will have a learning conference to share how these goals have been worked on and new goals set. These will be held on Thursday 27 June. Tomorrow the 1st Leadership Assembly will be held. Students have been working on developing their leadership skills through accepting responsibilities and service. You are all encouraged to attend to celebrate and acknowledge our student leaders’ work this term. Carmel Brosnahan-Pye PRINCIPAL

FAITH FACT FOR WEEK 11

The Trinity The Trinity is the central belief of the Christian faith. This belief is that there are three persons in one God – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is the relationship between Jesus who is one with God and whose spirit is

also the spirit of God.

At the heart of the Trinity is community – a relationship of love between three blessed persons which all Christians are called to work for on earth and eventually become part of in

heaven. The Trinity is a mystery which is not to be solved but to be entered into more deeply.

Education Review Office

ERO completed their on-site review last week. The positive emerging findings were shared with the Board. These are now developed into a report which is reviewed. This process takes time, however, the confirmed report will be shared with you when it becomes available.

Angela O’Reilly RETURNING OFFICER

IMPORTANT - ELECTORAL ROLL INFORMATION NEEDED Our Returning Officer for the Board Election is Mrs Angela O’Reilly our Office Manager. Angela is currently compiling the school electoral roll i.e. those people who are eligible to be on the voting roll at school. Who are they? Both the natural parents, even if they do not live with the children. THEN a third vote may go to a caregiver who cares for the children more than anyone else except the natural parents e.g. a step-father or step-mother who is living with the child. This third vote does not have to be assigned i.e. Mum & Dad have separated and the kids live with Mum who does not have a partner, therefore 2 votes only. If you think your family may be entitled to 3 votes, please advise Angela at the office as soon as possible and provide all relevant details e.g. name & address of a natural parent that is not living with the child (these may or may not already be on file) or the details of a step-father or mother that may be entitled to a vote.

Attendance Dues to the Parish Fr Brian Fennessy is sending out a reminder to parents that any outstanding attendance dues to the Parish should be paid by the end of the term that they are due. Unfortunately there are some parents that have outstanding balances from last year and the parish is not in a position to cover their non-payments. These payments can be made electronically to Bank Account No: 03 1592 0602308 21

The Attendance Dues are NOT to be confused with the Parent Contribution that

is payable to the school. If anyone is experiencing difficulties in paying, please feel free to see Carmel for assistance.

Food Drive Catholic Primary Schools in South Canterbury are holding a food drive to support a Catholic School community in Christchurch In the 1st week of next term. We have been made aware of a need and

would ask for your support in helping families in Christchurch still suffering post-earthquake and finding it hard to rebuild their shattered homes and lives. We are asking if each family could donate one non-perishable food item. These will be collected together and sent to the school to distribute at the end of Week 1 – Term 2.

Congratulations to the Room 1 – 4 students and families and friends of Papatuanuku Syndicate for their hard work and generous response to the Spellathon held recently.

A grand total of $1902.60 was raised for CARITAS – an amazing effort, well done.

Sav in a Bun Sav in a Bun will start up again on the first day of Term 2 – Monday 6 May 2013. The cost will be $1.50 and you can order your Sav In A Bun before school starts in the middle foyer (where other takeaway orders are taken). In order for this to run smoothly we will be needing volunteers to prepare and serve the Sav In A Bun on Mondays at lunch time. This will only take up an hour of your time and is fun and easy to prepare. Please contact Lisa Richards 027 6583072 if you can help out, it would be greatly appreciated.
