Eighth Sunday in Ordinary time March 10, 2019

—Lucas 4:1-5

Jesus invites each one of us to visit Him every Thursday from 3 to 7 pm during Blessed

Sacrament Adoration in our church. Fr. José will be hearing confession from 6 to 7 pm.

It’s the perfect season to begin a life-changing habit this season of Lent.

Intentionally set aside a time in your day to stop in and spend some time in prayer and meditation with Jesus

in an intimate, quiet atmosphere. Jesus waits for our little Acts of faith, adoration, love,

thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate…

...His Divine Majesty, in the Blessed Sacrament.

As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] be-fore the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly rea-sonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our tempta-tions, reasonable as they may sound.

Liturgy is rich in ritual. Ritual establishes the importance of an action through repetition. The Eucharist is an obvious example. So is the ceremony described in the first reading. Parts of it are very familiar: a priest pre-sides at the altar, the people offer their gifts and bow in the Lord’s presence, they recall God’s saving actions. Lent is full of familiar rituals as well: receiving ashes on our foreheads, witnessing the washing of feet, fol-lowing Jesus on the stations of the cross. Through repetition, these actions become ingrained in us, become a part of our being.

Always on the First Sunday of Lent we hear Jesus being tempted by the devil during the forty days he spent in the desert. We too are beginning a forty-day period during which we are challenged to repent and reori-ent ourselves toward God. We face temptations every day that distract us from following the Lord or lead us away from God. May our gathering together to celebrate the Eucharist inspire us and nourish us in the weeks ahead. Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may be-come more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life’s journey in grati-

tude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three “pillars” of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death’s darkness and power. Annually, we re-mind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life’s jour-ney: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven.

Is lit for the restored health of Ernest Cano, Jr. Sunday, March 10, 2019 to Saturday, March 16, 2019

(Luke 4:1-13).
