LITURGY OF THE DAY On this last Sunday of the liturgical year we read of the Last Judgment and the spiritual practices known as the corporal works of mercy. Further in this reading it is clear that those who feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and visit the sick and imprisoned are

unaware they are serving Christ. Recall Matthew’s warning about performing religious acts to gain recognition (Matt. 6:1-18). This group has followed the way of Christ but not so that they would be rewarded. Disciples respond to human need simply because of the need.

En éste ultimo Domingo del año litúrgico leemos acerca del Juicio Final y las practicas espirituales conocidas como las obras corporales de misericordia. Es claro en la lectura que aquellos que alimentan al hambriento, reciben al forastero, y visitan a los enfermos y presos, no se dan cuenta que están sirviendo a Cris-to. Recordemos la advertencia de Mateo (Mat. 6, 1-18) acerca de hacer actos religiosos solo para ganar reconocimiento. Éste grupo ha seguido el camino de Cristo, pero no para ser recom-pensados. Los discípulos responden a la necesidad humana solo por la mera necesidad.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE México tiene la reputación de ser un país muy católico. Sin embargo, en 1917 México recibió una nue-va constitución en la cual se estableció una política de intolerancia religiosa, especialmente en contra de la Iglesia católica romana. Con el paso de los años, se emitieron muchas leyes anticlericales mismas que fueron puestas en vigor hasta el punto que el gobierno federal decretó la suspensión de culto. Esto generó un levantamiento por parte de muchos mexicanos y mexicanas con el único fin de defender su religión y su derecho a celebrarla. En marzo de 1925, estos mexicanos católicos movidos por el deseo de justicia, fundaron la Liga Nacional para la Defensa de la Libertad Religiosa. Ese mismo mes, el Pa-pa Pío XI proclamó la Fiesta de Cristo Rey, celebrada el último domingo del año litúrgico. Esta fiesta se incluyó al calendario litúrgico para recordar a los cristianos —que no importa en qué país o bajo que gobierno nos encontremos— pertenecemos a un solo poder, a un solo Señor, ¡un solo Rey! Inspirados
