A Message from Father Brian ~
Thank you!
Two Tuesdays ago, a group of our young parishioners met me and our Music Director, Joe Mankowski, at the Island 16 multi-plex in Holbrook to see Disney’s new CGI version of The Lion King. The movie was meant to be a “thank you” to our kids and teenagers who participate in the life of our parish in any num-ber of ways—as altar servers, junior lectors, junior choir mem-bers and cantors, lectors for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and members of our Youth Group. We were a small group (summer can be tough for scheduling an outing), but I didn’t want to lose any more time in expressing the parish’s gratitude to these generous young people for lending their time and tal-ent in a wonderful variety of ways to enrich the life of our com-munity. A special thank you to all who were not able to join us on July 23rd—the parish is so proud of you, and grateful for the gifts you bring to St. Lawrence! Hopefully we can schedule another event to enjoy together without waiting till next sum-mer. And parents, please encourage your children and teens to get involved as soon as the next invitation comes along! And thanks again!
I’m guessing many of you were puzzled walking into church last weekend, seeing projectors and big movie screens set up to either side of the sanctuary. Bishop Barres has asked that every parish in the Diocese view the 9-minute video we saw, which spoke about the 2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Rather than talking or writing about the “CMA” in generalities, it was help-ful to hear firsthand testimonials from men, women, and young people who have actually benefited from the monies collected each year. Over 600,000 people are directly helped by the Ap-peal, right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and I’m genu-inely proud that St. Lawrence has not only met but exceeded our goal for several years running. (That’s a great “fringe bene-fit” for us, since we receive a substantial rebate when we reach our goal, and an even more generous one if we surpass it.) As we work harder at understanding what it means to be stew-ards of the good things God has entrusted to us, the Appeal presents a very practical, concrete way of sharing our blessings with our sisters and brothers here on Long Island. If you’ve already made a pledge toward the 2019 Appeal, I want to thank you, most sincerely, for your generosity (no gift is too small). If you haven’t made a contribution yet, or have never participat-ed, would you please consider it? Green donation pamphlets can be found on the tables by the doors. You can also call (516) 678-5800 x 296, or go to www.drvc.org/cma/ May our patron and brother, St. Lawrence, pray for us! God love you.
FAITH FORMATION PASS ON THE GOOD NEWS!! What good news? The Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall, over 1,000 of our parish children from grades 1-8 will participate in our Faith Formation program to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. At this time, over 80 of these children have no catechist to teach them. You can be the solution when you help them learn and grow in their faith by becoming a catechist. As you nurture the faith of our young people, you will grow and learn, also. We provide you with training, mate-rials, and support. Please prayerfully consider becoming a part of this important ministry. If you are interested, or for more information, please contact the Office of Faith Formation at 589-3160 or email [email protected]. FIRST GRADE FAITH FORMATION REGIS-TRATION-begins on Sunday, September 8th. Children and their families are invited to the 9:00am Family Mass. After Mass, please join us across the street in the gym of the school for “Ice Cream Sundae Sunday.” While your child (and you!) enjoy some delicious ice cream, you can register for our two-year preparation program for First Holy Communion. Please provide a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate. Please contact the Office of Faith Formation at 589-3160 for more information.

Gifts of Love
MISSION STATEMENT The parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr is a family of be-lievers, rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, and striving to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action.
As disciples of the risen Lord, and stewards of his extraor-dinary gifts, we seek to grow strong in faith, hope, and love. With the parish as our spiritual home, we commit ourselves to prayer, to teaching the faith, and to serving the needs of the poor.
Nourished by the Word of God and the Church’s sacra-ments, we cherish our rich Catholic heritage as we strive to build a welcoming faith community and proclaim Christ to the world. We look to our patron, St. Lawrence, who challenges us to see in one another—and in all God’s children—the “treasure of the Church.”
We lift up our hearts in prayer for our brothers
and sisters who have died, in the sure hope that they will one day see the Lord face to face:

THE QUESTION BOX
Just for fun—and some ongoing education—each week’s bulletin will offer a question on our Catholic spirituality and tradition. Enjoy! Q: This Tuesday, August 6th, is the Feast of the Transfigura-tion—one of the major feast days in the Church year, and the fourth Luminous Mystery of the rosary. In the Gospel account, Jesus is radiantly transformed before the eyes of Peter, James, and John at the top of a mountain (traditionally identified as Mt. Tabor). Who is it that ap-pears in conversation with the Lord? (a) Abraham and Moses (b) David and Solomon (c) Moses and Elijah (d) Isaiah and John the Baptist A: All the versions of this pivotal moment agree in this de-tail: Jesus, transfigured in glory, is seen speaking with Mo-ses and the prophet Elijah. Symbolically, Moses represents the Law—the Torah, so foundational to the Jewish tradition. Elijah is understood to be the greatest of the prophets given to Israel. Hence, these two figures ʺsum upʺ the whole of the covenant between Yahweh and his people—a covenant which is soon to be reborn through the saving death and resurrection of the Fatherʹs beloved Son.
MASS AT THE PINES A relatively small but very prayerful group contin-ues to gather each Sunday at 12:30 PM for Mass at Whyte Hall, at the Fire Island community of the Pines. Many of you are aware that the communi-ties of the Pines and Cherry Grove are canoni-cally part of our parish, and for years there has been a Mass offered virtually every Sunday from mid-June through Labor Day. The tentative sched-ule of celebrants for the remaining Masses is as follows: August 11th - Fr. Sean Gann August 18th - Fr. Tom Pers August 25th - Fr. Brian Ingram September 1st - Fr. Seth Awodoqu September 8th - Msgr. John Rowan
MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2020 We are happy to announce that the 2020 Calendar for Mass intentions will be open on Tuesday, August 20th. Please feel free to come to the rectory office during regular business hours, that is, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 12 noon, and 1 PM to 4:30 PM.
All intentions will be for “announced Masses,” (that is, the intention will be read aloud at the Mass being celebrated). On Tuesdays at 9:00 A.M., and on Saturdays at 5:00 P.M., we will continue to offer “multiple” Mass intentions (that, is, as many as five different intentions may be prayed for at that liturgy).
Initially, we must limit the number of Mass intentions to five (5) per person. Due to the large number of requests we re-ceive, we regret that we cannot accept arrangements over the phone at this time. As always, your donation can be paid in cash (exact, please!) or by check. Many thanks in advance for your cooperation and patience.

It’s Back to School Time (well, it will be) . . . Once again, Parish Outreach will assist our families in need with school sup-plies for their school-aged children. We will be giving our families gift cards instead of actual supplies so they can make their own purchases. This will allow them the flexibility of making the appropriate selections for each child. Your kindness and generosity are always very much appreciated and your contributions of gift cards would be most helpful in meeting the needs of our families. Please consider donating a gift card to one pf the following stores: • Dollar Tree • K-Mart • Staples • Target Of course, if you’d care to provide Outreach with a monetary gift, donations of that nature would also be welcome. Please place your gift cards and donations in the little school house located in the rear of the church. If you prefer placing your back to school gift in the collection basket, please be sure it is marked “Parish Outreach”. Thank you so much for your ongoing support and for all that you do in helping us assist our less fortunate neigh-bors. May God bless you always! Lorraine Magyar Director– Parish Outreach
