The flu season has come early to Santa Clara County. The County Department of Public Health has requested that we introduce adaptations to the Eucharistic Liturgy, until further notice. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, Holy Communion will not be shared under the form of Consecrated Wine. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. Should a communicant be unwilling to follow this directive, that person is to receive Holy Communion after everyone else has done so. People should refrain from holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The exchanging Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not require shaking hands or touching. All who administer Holy Communion are to wash their hands with an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution, such as Purell, before and after they administer the Sacrament. This precaution also extends to those who minister to the homebound. The obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symptoms to remain at home. Thank you for your immediate attention to these matters.

Dear St. Lawrence Community, Recently it was announced (see below) that The Diocese of San Jose and St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish have signed an agreement with Stratford School to lease them the old Academy building here on our St. Lawrence site. It is expected that their new Stratford High School will open for the 2019-2020 academic school year. In the meantime they will be responsible for completing some inspections and improvements on the Academy building during 2018 to ready the building for their opening. I also wanted everyone to be clear about and know that the expenses associated with the upkeep of the Academy building since it closed have been paid for completely by the Parish as budgeted by the Parish Finance Council. These expenses have not impacted the finances of our parish school which is strong in reserves. Peace- Fr. Ernesto

Dear Friends, Before and after the closure of Saint Lawrence Academy in 2016, the Parish and the Diocese pursued numerous options to attempt to utilize the high school facilities within our Catholic School system. Sadly, we were unsuccessful in these efforts. Once it was clear that we could no longer sustain a Catholic School on the site of the Academy high school, the Parish gave consideration to other options to allow the buildings to be put to some educational use and, at the same time, to generate income to allow the parish to repay the substantial debt that the Academy had accumulated in its final years. In the end, the Parish, in consultation with the Diocese, chose Stratford High School as its new tenant. Recognizing this is not a school in our system, we have every confidence that this is the best option available to allow Saint Lawrence Parish to be free from its debt. It will also allow the Parish to increase its capacity to serve its parishioners and the students in Saint Lawrence elementary and middle schools, which are well positioned to continue their mission as Catholic Schools now and into the future. We ask for your prayers and support as we enter into this agreement. In Peace,

The Filipino Catholic Community warmly invites everyone in our parish and school community to participate in this annual tradition. On December 22, Friday, a pot-luck reception will be held after this Mass where the parishioners, families, and friends get-together at the Community Center to enjoy the festive spirit the Season brings.

“Simbang Gabi” Schedule: December 17, Sunday at 6:00 P.M. December 18 - 22 at 7:00 P.M. December 23, Saturday, at 5:00 P.M.

Volunteer Opportunities The Sacristan Ministry

The Ministry of Sacristan is a time-honored ministry in the Catholic Church. The Sacristan provides an important and essential service to the community by doing all the things that are necessary for our liturgical celebrations. The Sacristan is required to prepare the worship space for its celebrations ranging from the cleaning of the Church and its furnishings to the cleaning of the vessels and linens used in the liturgies. The Ministry of Sacristan is a “behind the scenes” ministry.

At St. Lawrence Parish and Education Center the Ministry of Sacristan is divided into three different ministries:

SETUP SACRISTANS: Preparing the table before the Liturgy is the setup sacristan’s responsibility. Arriving at least 30 minutes before Mass to set out all the items needed for liturgy and then staying after liturgy to clean up and put everything away. Time commitment: One Sunday a month (one hour).

SANCTUARY ATTENDANTS: The Sanctuary Attendants clean the Church each Friday or Saturday by working in teams of two. They are responsible for making sure the worship space is clean and tidy for the weekend Masses. Currently there are 4 teams so the time commitment is once every four weeks. It takes two people one hour a week.

LAUNDERERS: The Launderers are responsible for the washing and ironing of the altar linens, towels and Altar Server albs used during Mass. Time commitment: Currently we have 12 launderers so the commitment is once every 12 weeks. Depending on the amount of linens (more during Easter & Christmas) it could take at least 2 hours.

At this time the greatest need are Sanctuary Attendants and Setup Sacristans.

Please prayerfully consider joining one of these essential ministries. Call Vickie Wallace at 408-296-3000

If you’ve ever read Charlotte’s Web, you will most likely think of Charlotte with this greeting. It’s one of the many childhood classics that evoke warm memories and nostalgic smiles. It’s also one of the books Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School students will read, discuss and enjoy.

Fourth Graders at Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School not only read this wonderful book about Charlotte and her piglet friend, Wilbur, but they each created “some pig" of their own. Ms. Jacowitz and her aide, Ms.Volta, instructed the class in paper mache techniques to craft their piglets.

Kayla thought Charlotte’s Web "was a really good book” and making pigs "was really fun.” Teaghan gave it all "a thumbs up,” meanwhile Mariajosé remarked, “It was like making piñatas!"

Our students’ love of books is what made our Scholastic Book Fair such a smashing success! Every day the Fair was open in our school library, kids excitedly browsed through rows and rows of books to purchase. These 3th graders had to be pulled away from the Fair to pose with their finds!

Instilling a love of reading continues through Middle School at Saint Lawrence, where two teachers are dedicated to reading and literature, in addition to a separate teacher for Language Arts. Mr. Pingel leads the 7th grade reading program, while Mr. Nguyen guides the 6th grade through The Giver by Lois Lowry and the 8th graders through Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street. Mr. Nguyen feels that having different teachers for Language Arts and Reading allows them the opportunity "to collaborate and sync up their curriculum for the text.” Regarding the book selections, he felt The Giver was “a big hit” while The House on Mango Street exposed the students to vignettes in literature. We can’t wait to see how many of our Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School students are inspired to be the next authors on the bestseller lists!

At Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School, we make reading fun!! Would you like to be part of this fun reading?

Bethlehem and Nazareth (taken from The Little Blue Book

Of Reflections On Advent)

Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry

In Bethlehem, the traditional site of the birth of Jesus is commemorated with the Basilica of the Nativity.

In 325 A.D., Queen Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, visited the Holy Land to protect and preserve the sites where Jesus lived. Among her projects was the building of a basilica over the cave believed to be Jesus’ birthplace. That church was badly damaged when the Samaritans of the nearby city of Nablus revolted in 529.

St. Sabbas asked the help of the Emperor Justinian (527-565) in rebuilding the present church, which is the oldest church in the Holy Land. Mosaics dating back to the fourth century have been unearthed in the church.

The church’s interior is in the shape of a cross. One unique feature of the basilica is a small door through which visitors must crouch down in order to enter the church. The low, narrow door was so constructed to discourage the Crusaders from riding their horses into the church.

In 2008, the basilica was placed on the Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund, because the three religious groups responsible for the basilica disagree on necessary restoration work.

* * * * * * * * * * * * Jesus was raised in the small hill town of Nazareth, located in the hills of Galilee in the northern part of modern-day Israel. Possibly less than 200 people lived in the town as Jesus was growing up;

This childhood home of Jesus does not appear in the Old Testament, but is mentioned only in the New Testament.

The most famous building in Nazareth is the Basilica of the Annuncia-tion, which is traditionally honored as the place where the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce that she would bear the Son of God. The church is administered by the Franciscan community.

Today Nazareth is the capitol of Galilee.

Pbro. Santiago Martin (FM) Responsable MARC.
