A Message from Father Brian ~ “Be kind, be kind, be kind.” The novelist, Henry James, is quoted as having said, “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” Kindness was beautifully exemplified last Saturday evening, when at the 5:00 PM Mass, one of our elderly parishioners tripped on a kneeler and took a hard fall that required medical attention. His wife sent me a lovely note, which she invited me to share with the parish, expressing her deep appreciation for the kind-ness that was shown not only to her husband, but to her and her family at a very frightening moment. Many of the people who came to their aid are well know to you, but I won’t try to name names for fear of leaving someone out. I will quote “Cathy,” though, who wrote, I would like to thank everyone who helped us, and tell you we were happy to be in a par-ish with such caring and loving people.” What a beautiful and encouraging thing to hear about our community (not that it’s any secret!), and especially at a time in our lives when so many people struggle on a daily basis with stressed, uncertainties and hurts that so easily leave us agitated, ill-tempered and out of sorts. The Spirit of the Lord is most certainly at work whenever and wherever kindness comes to the fore, as it did not only last Saturday evening, but every day in our parish. Congratulations! Congratulations are certainly in order for two large groups of our young people: the boys and girls who recently received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s gifts in the sacrament of Confirmation, and the chil-dren who just these past two weeks have encountered the risen Christ in the wondrous sacrament of his Body and Blood for the first time. I personally wish to express my great appreciation to Maria Davidson, Jean Rico, and Anne-Marie Carnazza from our Office of Faith Formation, to all our catechists, volunteers, ushers and other ministers, and of course to our par-ents, families, and sponsors for having shepherded our young people to these life-changing moments in their spiritual journey. In imitation of our children, may ALL of us remain hungry for the precious gift of the Bread of Life, and open to the daily guidance of God’s Spirit.
Off to the Pines Believe it or not, even in the midst of so much insta-bility and change brought on by the COVID pandem-ic, the little group of faith-filled disciples who gather for Sunday Mass at the Pines on Fire Island have con-tinued to do so this summer. As always, Msgr. Ro-wan has been instrumental in keeping this liturgy going, but this weekend I have the pleasure of cele-brating the Mass there at Whyte Hall. I’ve shared with you before that I find it an important responsi-bility—and a privilege—to celebrate the Eucharist with a community of people who (if I can generalize) have not felt especially welcome within the arms of the Church. So long as the Great South Bay is rela-tively calm, I have no doubt it will be a gratifying Sunday afternoon for me. Let’s continue to hold one another in our prayers. May our patron and brother, St. Lawrence, pray for us. God love you!

COMMUNION TO THE SICK Are you one of our Extraordinary Ministers who had been bringing Holy Communion to one or more homebound parishioners? The Diocese has issued guidelines that would allow you to resume that beautiful ministry, but we want a complete and up-to-date a list of who is visiting, and who is being visited, so we can properly communicate important directives to the whole group. If you havenʹt yet been in touch with the rectory with your contact information, please call ASAP: (631) 589-0042 x 124.

SOME GENTLE (BUT IMPORTANT) REMINDERS
At the present time Mass is being celebrated: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00A.M.
Weekend Masses: Saturdays at 5:00P.M., and Sundays at 9:00 and 11:00A.M.
MASKS: Everyone must wear a mask, from nose to chin, in the church for the entire Mass. The same is true for funerals, weddings, baptisms, etc.
SEATING: Strict social distancing is to be maintained at all times. Seating is arranged 6 feet apart and no one should be directly behind or in front of each other. Please sit only in open pews, and sit in the desig-nated spot with a sign. “Individuals” or “couples” may use “family” spaces, provided they are free.
DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION: In keeping with diocesan guidelines, Holy Communion is being distributed after Mass has ended. When approaching for Communion, form a single line and remain six feet apart from others, observing the blue tape on the floor. Although you may receive either in the hand or on the tongue, the weight of medical opinion is that it is safer to receive in the hand. If you receive in the hand, extend your arms and open your hand up fully. If you receive on the tongue please go to the priest, and position yourself at the end of his line.
YOUTUBE CHANNEL: For those who are unable to return to Mass at this time, we continue to record the Sunday Mass from our own church, and post the video on our YouTube channel called “St Lawrence of Sayville NY”. It can be accessed by going to our parish website homepage , and clicking on the link.
CONFESSIONS: Available Saturdays from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. in the Bethany Center. Please enter the doors on the side facing Dollar Tree. Kindly take a sheet of instructions when you arrive and sit in one of the chairs in the lobby. If all the seats are taken, please remain either outside the building (keeping proper distance from one another), in the church, or in your car until space allows. Everyone coming MUST have a mask or facial covering.
If you are feeling sick or have experienced any of the virus symptoms please DO NOT attend Mass.

OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr is a family of believers, rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, and striving to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action.
As disciples of the risen Lord, and stewards of his extraordi-nary gifts, we seek to grow strong in faith, hope, and love. With the parish as our spiritual home, we commit ourselves to prayer, to teaching the faith, and to serving the needs of the poor.
Nourished by the Word of God and the Church’s sacraments, we cherish our rich Catholic heritage as we strive to build a welcoming faith community and proclaim Christ to the world. We look to our patron, St. Lawrence, who challenges us to see in one another—and in all God’s children—the “treasure of the Church.”
