Pensamientos de Media NocheMidnight Musings

A Holy Land

Thank you so much for your prayers for all of us pilgrims, as we were stranded in Israel because of Hurricane Sandy. We felt it was an inconvenience for us and our families, but we also knew how much the people in the Northeast and beyond suffered because of Hurricane Sandy. We were certainly praying for them when we gathered for the Eucharist in Jerusalem. Everyone finally got home, some through London, some through Paris, or through Amsterdam and Detroit– my route home! But I made it for the Mass on Friday, the beginning of our anniversary year celebration. Many people asked what the most memorable part of the pilgrimage was. What touched me the most? I believe it was not just a place, but the wonderful people with whom we traveled. Our pilgrims really made it a journey of faith; they were not just tourists. They came to pray, to reflect, to journey… together! They made the pilgrimage what it was; their shared faith, their friendship and their love made it a most memorable event. They shared together in a wonderful Christian spirit– most from St. Louis, a couple from Epiphany, three from my previous parish St. Bartholomew. We embraced together a spiritual journey with prayer, scripture, Eucharist, and even a wedding at Cana! I thank these brothers and sisters for their deep faith and Christ-like love. Their spirit made the physical journey a spiritual pilgrimage. (And isn’t it true? – often more important than the place where you travel is the people with whom you travel.) But, if I must name one particular place of significance, I have to speak of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. We felt privileged to celebrate the Easter Mass there– complete with “Jesus Christ is risen…He is risen indeed!” The sepulcher, the tomb, remains empty. Jesus was buried there, but is raised to life in the whole world. An angel rolled the stone back, not to let him out, but to let us in, to see that the tomb was empty. No stone could hold him in. He lives throughout the world. In that sense, you find the “holy land” not just in Jerusalem, but wherever believers have met the risen Lord and accepted him as their Savior. It is a spiritual, learning, renewing experience to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, but Jesus is no more present there than he is in our South Florida community. We, the people of faith, are the Holy Land where Jesus lives. President Obama remains in office. We elect or re-elect a President every four years, but Jesus, the Lord of all creation, remains “in office” forever. Different people may have different political allegiances, but our fundamental allegiance to Jesus binds us together. Political partisans can battle, but Catholic parishioners work together, Republican, Democrat, and Independent. Jesus’ total “platform” is bigger, different, better, and Godlier than the platform of any political group. Whether or not your candidate won or lost, the real winners are those who hold on to their relationship with Christ, those who continually strive to seek what their Lord wants from them. Yours in Christ,
