Dear Friends,

Today we begin the most important week of the year. Today we turn all of our attention to the Person Who freely chose two thousand years ago to attend to our greatest need. Our need for a Savior.

There has never been a person - and there will never be a person - Who loves you more. Holy Week is the Week of Greatest Love. Do not turn away from this Love; turn toward it with all of your heart, mind, body, and soul. “Love him totally, Who totally gave Himself for your love.” (Saint Clare of Assisi)

This means making your faith and your soul the top priority before all other things this Week. Cancel whatever you have to cancel; decline whatever activity you have to decline; take off time from work. The Sacred Liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday bestow a grace unlike any other.

One more admonition ~ on Ash Wednesday the words were pronounced: “Turn away from sin, and believe in the Gospel.” This Week definitively turn away from sin and make a cleansing Confession if you have not already done so. The Priests of the Parish are here to serve you all year long, but especially during this Holy Week. The Holiest Week has begun!

Your Pastor,

Father O'Hare

PASTOR’S REFLECTION

SPIRITUALITY - What is Holy Week?

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. On this day we celebrate the triumphant entry of our Lord into Jerusalem. The people laid palms before Him, a gesture reserved for triumphant leaders. We celebrate this at Mass by distributing palms to the faithful.

The next major event in Holy Week is Holy Thursday. On this day, Jesus celebrated the Passover feast with the disciples. We know this feast as the Last Supper. This is the night He was betrayed by Judas and arrested. After supper Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and prayed. He was then arrested and taken away from the Apostles. We commemorate this by removing the Blessed Sacrament at the end of the Holy Thursday Mass. Until midnight Jesus, present in the Blessed Sacrament, is adored at an “Altar of Repose” outside of the church sanctuary (in our school gym). At midnight the Blessed Sacrament is removed to a hidden location.

The next day is Good Friday, when we commemorate the trial, punishment, and crucifixion of Our Lord. On that morning, Jesus was brought before Annas, a powerful Jewish cleric who condemned Jesus for blasphemy. From there, Jesus was presented to Pilate for trial. Although Pilate found no guilt in Jesus, he agreed to have him crucified to appease the crowd of people and prevent a riot. Christ was stripped, flogged, and crowned with thorns. He was then forced to carry His Cross to the place of His execution. He was nailed to the Cross between two thieves.

It is customary to pray especially during the Three Hours that Christ suffered on the Cross (from noon to 3pm). The Liturgy on this day is called “The Veneration of the Cross,” and includes the distribution of Holy Communion.

The next day is Holy Saturday, and no Mass or devotions are celebrated on this day (apart from a customary anticipatory blessing of Easter Food.). On this day we remember that Jesus is in the tomb and we await His Resurrection.

Easter Sunday begins at nightfall with the unique lengthy Mass which is called “Easter Vigil Mass,” in which adults receive Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. This Mass is the greatest of all the liturgies throughout the year.

The following day is Easter Sunday, the day on which it was discovered that the Tomb was empty, and our Lord was resurrected, triumphing over death once and for all. Lilies adorn the sanctuary, the statue veils are removed, festive music is provided for the Sacred Liturgy, and the greatest victory is celebrated! The Son of God has taken upon Himself the sins of the world and has risen victorious! And so we confidently proclaim: “We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you; because by your Holy Cross and Resurrection you have redeemed the world!”

Prayer for the Homebound Lord, you have a special love for those who are weak, infirm, and dependent. Bless the homebound parishioners of our parish as they carry their daily crosses. May our

prayers bring them strength and consolation, and the Sacraments sanctify and inspire them. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. This week we pray

especially for the following homebound parishioners: Phylis Sedgley, Chris Schreiner, Lillian Spragen, Gerry Wagner, Donald Weber, and Joseph Zable.

Participating in the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) is an opportunity for us to imitate Christ and to bear witness to His transforming love. By sharing our gi!s, we help those whose needs are the greatest: the poor and the vulnerable. Our gi!s also demonstrate our commitment to promoting the sanctity of life, the teaching of our Catholic faith, our service to the youth and vocations for the Priesthood.

If your circumstances allow, I respectfully ask you to consider a sacrificial pledge to the BLA this year. May Our Lord Jesus bless you as together, in His name, we encourage one another by word and deed!
