Page 2 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of Father Raaser
During the night of October 12-13, 1917 it had rained, soaking the ground and the pilgrims who came to Fatima by the thousands, around 70,000 in fact. For the previous 5 months on the 13th of each month, Our Lady appeared to three children: Lucia dos Santos, 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, age 9 and 7. On the 13th of October, Our Lady appeared for the last time to the three children together. Our Lady would appear one final time in 1920 to Lucia.
100 years ago this Friday, the Miracle of the Sun took place.
The following account is taken from a secular, anti-Catholic newspaper:
At one o'clock in the afternoon, midday by the sun, the rain stopped. The sky, pearly grey in color, illuminated the vast arid landscape with a strange light. The sun had a transparent gauzy veil so that the eyes could easily be fixed upon it. The grey mother-of-pearl tone turned into a sheet of silver which broke up as the clouds were torn apart and the silver sun, enveloped in the same gauzy grey light, was seen to whirl and turn in the circle of broken clouds. A cry went up from every mouth and people fell on their knees on the muddy ground....
The light turned a beautiful blue, as if it had come through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral, and spread itself over the people who knelt with outstretched hands. The blue faded slowly, and then the light seemed to pass through yellow glass. Yellow stains fell against white handkerchiefs and against the dark skirts of the women. They were repeated on the trees, on the stones and on the serra. People wept and prayed with uncovered heads, in the presence of a miracle they had awaited. The seconds seemed like hours, so vivid were they.
On “the day the sun danced,” thousands of people bore witness to the miracle that proved the validity of the Fatima apparitions. The other great message to the people of that time is that God is not dead. God is very much alive and acting in the midst of His people.
The deadly philosophy of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, along with World War I, the instability of the Portuguese government following the revolution and coup that ended the monarchy in 1910, a new liberal constitution separating Church and State, which sought to omit the faith was the backdrop against which Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children.
To prove that the apparitions were true, Mary promised the children that during the last of her six appearances she would provide a “sign” so people would believe in the apparitions and in her message. The event was declared of “supernatural character” by the Church in 1930. Pope Pius XII approved the Fatima apparitions in 1940. In 2017, the two little children Francesco and Jacinta were declared saints, the youngest saints to be proclaimed.
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady and the Miracle, we will have a special Mass this Friday, October 13th at 7:30 PM in the Church.
Our times are similar to that of 1917; Our Lady has asked us to pray the Rosary for peace and the conversion of sinners. In light of the violence of our country and world and the lack of respect for the sacredness of all human life, I encourage all to come and attend Mass this night and bring the children as well.

Readings for Next Sunday
TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a This passage describes the new Jerusalem as a heavenly banquet on the mountain with the Lord God wiping away all tears.
Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 In simple, direct words, Paul thanks the Philippians for alleviating his hardships. He stresses, though, that he is as accustomed to poverty as to abundance and finds all his strength in Christ.
Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14 Once more speaking to the chief priests and the elders, Jesus relates the parable of the wedding banquet. A King, preparing a wedding banquet for his son, summons all the invited guests. When, after several invitations, no guests arrive, the King commands his servants to “go out into the byroads and invite anyone you come upon.” Again, Jesus warns the elders, “the invited are many, the elect are few.”
