5th Sunday of Easter

There are two different ways to spend a day at

the beach. The first is to play in the water all

day, splashing and riding the waves that roll

into shore. The other way is to sit on a dock,

occasionally dipping your feet into the water

and then retreat to the comfort of the shade or

an air conditioned room. But what’s a trip to

the beach without a wave or two, or finding a

seashell or a small crab? You might as well

just stay home!

Some people think that coming to church on

Sunday is enough. They put the envelope in

the collection basket, receive Communion and

then go home. They did their duty. During the

week there is little thought of God or faith or

church. Other people come to Church with lots

of prayers and good deeds to offer to the Lord,

and they leave with a sense of renewal and

mission. They put their envelope in too, and it

often represents some sacrifice the family

made or a special project done just for the

church. God is an important part of their lives,

and prayer, Scripture and ‘religious stuff’ is

part of daily conversation. Church is not a

duty; it’s a way of life.

Just like the vine is part of the branch, we are

part of Christ and therefore, part of the

Church. A vine needs nourishment from the

branch to survive and thrive. So, don’t just

hang around church, like an old vine doing

nothing; be a part of the action and be a person

of faith!

Congratulations!

Easter began as a single day,

the Pasch, which later grew

into three days, the Triduum.

It took a few centuries for

forty days to be tacked on be-

fore it, and fifty days behind

it. But, technically, the fifty

days of Easter are looked upon as one great day that

rolls on and on.. It just has fifty sunrises and fifty

sunsets - on the liturgical calendar it is treated as

one great day of the Lord. The fifty days have

their roots in the fifty days between Jewish Pass-

over and the great feast of Pentecost, and that fits

well with the way Luke describes the encounters of

the Risen Lord with the disciples. For forty days

they experienced his presence in a profoundly inti-

mate way, for ten days they had to deal with his

leaving, and then at Pentecost a rush of insight

erupted into the church that Jesus’ promise of “I

will be with you always” could be trusted. It is of-

ten true, though, that the parish works so hard to

prepare and celebrate the Triduum that it's hard to

pump much Easter energy into the next seven

weeks. It's also true that in the United States, we're

very good at preparing for holidays, but we're not

so good at extending the celebration. Christmas is

packed away very quickly, and Easter evaporates

even faster at the mall and elsewhere. Yet, there

are ways of extending Easter joy. One of the great

works of the season is called "mystagogy," which

means "reflection on the mysteries." We help the

newly baptized assimilate their new life, and so we

can take plenty of time to celebrate what God has

done for us in Christ.

Scituate Food Pantry Volunteer Help Wanted

The Scituate Food Pantry provides about 200 families with over 4,000 gro-cery bags of food a year!

The annual Post Office Food Drive on May 9 is a major source of that food. We need volunteers to help us sort and pack the donations at the Masonic Temple that day. Volunteers need to attend a brief training session either Wednesday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. or Thursday, May 7 at 10:00 a.m.

There are two shifts on May 9 the day of the drive: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

25TH & 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS

SCOUT MASS AT THE CATHEDRAL—Come celebrate with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from all over the Archdio-cese of Boston as they receive their Catholic religious em-blems and medals at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Bos-ton on May 15th at 2:00 p.m. Recipients of the Marian medal, I Live My Faith medal, Pope Pius XII and Ad Altare Dei medals will gather at the Cathedral for Mass. Younger scouts who have already received the Family of God medal, Parvuli Dei medal or Light of Christ medal within the past year, are welcome to come and receive a certificate for their achievement.
