English Learning Objective:

Treasure Island To predict what will happen in the text.

To use inference skills.

To predict what will happen in the text.

Explore the meaning of words in context.

Summarise a text.

Learning Activity:

Think about the title – ‘Treasure Island’. Write down any words that you associate with this title. (You could do this as a list or mind-map.) Read the extract on Seesaw and draw the character you think it is describing. Label it with details from the text. (You may need to check the meaning of some of the vocabulary the author uses.)

Look at the different pirate flags. What can you infer about this pirate from their flag? What do you think each symbol represents?

Watch Chapter 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POGloksREnk Predict what you think will happen next. Think about these questions… Why do you think the Captain pays the boy to look out for a ‘seafaring man with one leg’? Will the boy’s father insist on more money from the Captain?

Watch Chapter 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qKW6KzwMkk What evidence is there that ‘Black Dog’ and ‘the Captain’ are wary of one another? (Highlight the extract on Seesaw.) Black Dog held up his ‘mutilated hand’. What does the word ‘mutilated’ mean?

Chapter 3 is called ‘The Black Spot’. What do you think the black spot could symbolise?

Watch Chapter 3:

Page 2: St Mary's School - Home Learning Plan – Week 4 … › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 05 › 2020_05_10...St Mary's School - Home Learning Plan – Week 4 Year Group: 5 Miss

Look at the images of the different front covers of ‘Treasure Island’. Predict what you think will happen in the story. (Explain what detail on the front covers made you predict that and why.)

Why do you think pirates used flags? How are all of the flags similar?

What do you think the Captain keeps in his sea chest? Does Dr Livesey seem intimidated by the Captain?

Dr Livesey says ‘I’ll do my best to help this worthless fellow.’ Why does the doctor think he is worthless? ‘We hoisted the Captain upstairs.’ Can you use the verb ‘hoisted’ in your own sentence?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmlGPFzJUaE Use the images from the video clips you have watched this week on Seesaw to help you summarise the first three chapters.

Extension Create your own front cover for the story ‘Treasure Island.’

Create your own pirate flag. Explain what it represents or symbolises.

Read and listen to the song again– What do you think this song is about? http://www.longjohnsilvertrust.co.uk/deadmanschest.php

Read chapter 2 on this online text: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/120/120-h/120-h.htm

Create your own story map or comic strip to show the main events from the first three chapters.

Creative Curriculum Learning Objective:

History To understand how different sources provide information about the past.

Geography Identify and name rivers in the UK.

Science Reversible or irreversible changes?

PSHE To know what makes a healthy lifestyle and the choices I need to make to be healthy and happy.

DT To design and make a product, using ingredients, which fits the purpose.

Learning Activity

Famous Pirates Read the Pirate fact and then respond to the question.

I will share your responses on Seesaw so you can read each other’s ideas.

What is a river? (Draw and label a diagram of a river without discussing or doing any research.) Watch the two videos on this page: How are rivers formed? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z849q6f/articles/z7w8pg8

Now, draw a second diagram of a river and label they key parts. Label the seas surrounding the UK using the map provided. Then use an Atlas / online map to locate the different rivers in the UK. Match the number on the map provided to the name of the river.

What are irreversible changes? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcvv4wx/articles/z9brcwx Are these changes in materials reversible or irreversible? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zc84d2p 1. Can you give an example of a reversible change when the material … a) melts and cools? b) evaporates and condenses? 2. Can you give examples of irreversible changes? You could make a video / poster / diagram to show the difference between reversible and irreversible changes.

It is important to think about the choices we make with food to help us stay happy and healthy. I would like you to make an image to help promote making healthy choices with food. (Please ask an adult before using food / utensils etc.)

Lots of us were surprised to find out how much sugar was in some of our snacks and how much sugar we were consuming daily. Lots of you included ‘natural sugars’ in your sugar diary e.g. fruit. Research: What is the difference between natural sugars (found in fruit – fructose) and refined sugars?

What change could we make to reduce the amount of refined sugar we consume? Watch the video on Seesaw to see what happened when Miss Guillaume followed a recipe but substituted the refined sugar for natural sugars.

Extra things you could do each day: Read a variety of books and keep a log of your reflections as you read. – You could record your predictions, illustrations of characters, interesting vocabulary or a summary of a chapter. Practise your times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. Use your Year 5 / 6 spelling list to practise different spellings. Be active – practise a new skill or go for a walk / run / cycle. Create a Yin-Yang image. Rory McCann has advertised this as a competition. If you would like to be entered into the competition entries must be in on Monday 11th May! (I am sorry I only saw this competition this weekend.) More details are on Seesaw or Rory McCann’s Facebook Page.
