INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY

This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. “The word of the Lord” is something we hear in church, perhaps without giving it much thought. Peter and Daniel both remind us that the words of Jesus we hear in Scripture are none other than the words of the beloved Son of the Ancient One, who is the Most High over all the earth. We would do well to pay close attention to these words. In the first reading, the Prophet Daniel observes the Ancient One on his throne, to whom is presented one like a Son of Man who will receive everlasting dominion. The second reading reminds us that Jesus is the beloved son of the Father. In the Gospel, Jesus takes Peter, James and John up the mountain where he is transfigured. The disciples then see Moses and Elijah conversing with him.

The Apostles Peter, James and John witnessed something

that few people will ever see or hear: the glory of God as Jesus

was transfigured before them, and the voice of God which

from a cloud declared, This is my beloved Son, with whom I

am well pleased; listen to him. That would shake anyone up.

But more importantly, it changes them. Upon seeing Jesus

transfigured and hearing the voice of God, Peter, James and

John became terrified. They fell to the ground in fear. But then

they were touched by Jesus, who said to them the words we

hear often from him in Scripture: Do not be afraid. Because

fear is the opposite of love. And this touch of the Lord, this

message of love, transformed these Apostles so that when

the time came, they could share the prophetic message of the

glory and honor of the beloved Son of God with the world.

We are also touched by Jesus. We are touched by the Lord

every time we come to Mass, every time we are attentive to

the word of God preached and proclaimed, every time we

come forward to receive Holy Communion and are nourished

and strengthened by Jesus himself. We are touched by Jesus

and we are changed. We are transformed. We are made to be

like a lamp that shines and brings Christ’s light and love to

those living in the darkness of fear, doubt and

discouragement. The more we open ourselves to being

transformed by Jesus, the more He will work in and through

us as instruments of his love to bring healing and peace to

our world.

R C I A How can I become a Catholic?

Life is a journey that continually searches for meaning. The human heart hungers for relationships that nurture one’s maturity and ability to love and to be loved. Often as one seeks to fulfill these very human yearnings, the realization that something is missing from life is made. As one reflects upon this void, it is not unusual to discover that this something is God. This awakening may lead to a turning point in one’s life to commit to a relationship with God and seek out a worshipping community to guide one’s journey in faith. Many will ask the question: How can I become a Catholic? If you are interested in becoming Catholic or know someone who has an interest, please contact Church Office and give your name, address, and telephone number. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the normal way for unbaptized persons and those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition to become a Catholic. BAPTISM PREPARATION PROGRAM IN OUR PARISH

Catholics are called and obligated to have their children baptized and raised in the Catholic Church. Infants are normally baptized prior to the age of 6 months, but only after parents or guardians will assure the Church that they fully intend to raise them in the faith and to be part of the faith community. Parents are required to attend Preparation Class so that they may better understand the promises that they are making concerning raising the child in faith. Preparation Classes are offered on 4th Thursday of every month at 7.00 PM, except in July. This year Preparation Classes are offered on Sep. 28 and Nov. 23. Please register your attendance in the office. The deadline for registrations is Thursday, week before the Preparation Class. Contact office if you want your child to be baptized in one of our churches. You will be asked to fill Application Form requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for your child. Baptism usually takes place during any Sunday Mass in Rocky Mountain House or Evergreen or Caroline. For more information, call office or check our website.

DEVOTION TO DIVINE MERCY AS PARISH FAMILY

The FAMILY PRAYER FOR DIVINE MERCY devotion continues in our parish. Families or individuals will take the Image of Divine Mercy and Prayer Package home for a two-week period. All members of St. Matthew Parish and missions of Jesuit Martyrs and St. Joseph the Workman are invited and encouraged to participate in this devotion, and join in praying for mercy - for our parish, our families, our town and our world. Sign-up sheet is available in the office. The image is given to the family/individual at Sunday Mass on first and third Sunday of the month. Please, call our office!
