REFLECTIONS FROM MY ROCKING CHAIR Dear Friends, The patron saint of our parish, Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, is fond of remembering the parables of Jesus (“The Kingdom of God is like … “), they number seven. We heard four proclaimed July 12th and 19th. Jesus introduces us to the remarkable farmer and his field and his seed. With a desire for heaven, He invites us in these parables – when lived - to taste and see a little bit of what it is like to be a “citizen of heaven” (St. Paul).

Growing up in West Philly I know little of sowing seed. This is no excuse however since my baby brother, Joe II (named after our grandfather, better known to me as “Pop Pop”) has cultivated a noteworthy vegetable garden in each of the three homes in which he and his wife Kris have lived. It’s not lost to me that he has his grandson, Joey IV (what else!) crawling around the garden dirt planting seed where my now aging brother cannot reach. Joseph III sadly followed my example: we eat the produce and leave the growing to II and IV. I digress. In the first parable the farmer throws the seed every which way, on the foot path, amidst the rocks, in shallow ground AND in good soil. From the point of view regarding where the seed has landed, we are encouraged to choose wisely how we are living. However, if we focus on the farmer the parable asks us to contemplate the height and depth of God’s generosity. He invites us all. On July 19th the gospel presents three parables on the Kingdom of Heaven. In the first of these the farmer counsels patience. Yes, an enemy has raided the field of newly planted wheat and sowed weeds among the wheat. The alarmed servants ask the farmer that they might pull up the weeds. He calms them. Now is not the time for pulling out the weeds. The wheat will be uprooted along with the weeds. Wait for a time when the weeds have clearly shown themselves, then, they can be gathered up and burned. The farmer again as in the parable above represents God who is patient with us, generously so. It is clear to me- and likely you agree – that the enemy has busied himself under cover of darkness sowing weeds among the wheat. It is difficult to pass on the Good News. In 1960, for example, when I was 12 and in my formative years, faith wise, the success rate of passing on the faith to my generation from my parents might be 75%. The love of Christ was clothed in the Law of Christ. The do’s and don’ts were clearly articulated and were reinforced in the family and in the culture. Blessings, Msgr. Owens Posted July 16: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has received clarification that the new restrictions announced by Governor Wolf on July 15 do not apply to churches. Posted July 17: Question: Given that the Governor’s new 25/250 occupancy limits do not apply to churches, do the Governor’s new 25/250 occupancy limits apply to non-religious services such as Bingo, Festivals, Wedding Receptions, Baby Showers, etc. that might be held on parish grounds? Answer: Religious organizations are exempt from this order. However, non-religious functions like those mentioned above would need to adhere to the 25 person limit. Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Help-Line: Do you need help accessing services and supports for someone with an intellectual disability or Autism? A collaboration of Catholic Social Services-Developmental Programs, The Office for Persons with Disabilities and the Schools of Special Education of the Archdiocese is offering this convenient help-line to assist families connect to disabilities services provided by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. To reach the Help-Line call:484-472-5041 or email: [email protected].

Fr. TOM’S WEEKLY REFLECTION We have all heard of the Holy Grail and how, through the centuries, people have sacrificed a lot to search for it. There is a sense of longing, a yearning, a sense of incompleteness. We feel that there is more to life and that what we have is not enough. So we go in search of something more symbolized by the Holy Grail. We do almost anything in our search for it. We plumb the depths of the sea, climb the highest mountains, land on the moon; we fast, do penance, make pilgrimages to holy places, go off into the solitude of the desert. We exert a lot of time and effort in responding to our sense that there is something more, something greater, something beyond the confines and limitations of this present life. In the Gospel, Jesus doesn’t speak of the Holy Grail. He speaks instead of the search for

the Kingdom of God and He gives examples of the lengths to which people will go to possess it. Note, however, one person is simply working in the field and stumbles across a treasure quite by accident. Another person is going about his business as a merchant when he makes the discovery of the fine pearl. What is the point? The Kingdom of God is found most readily in the ordinary experiences of life. It is by going about our ordinary business that we discover God. The two people in the parables didn’t find the great treasure in an exotic location, nor by following extreme pious practices, nor by making great journeys. They made their discovery simply by doing their jobs - by going about their everyday business. But once they made their discovery they recognized it for what it was. They recognized the value of what they had found. They recognized the treasure right there in their midst. That is a great grace from God, to recognize the treasure in our midst and not always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Too often we become envious of another’s talent, wealth, car, house or lifestyle. We fail to recognize our own treasure, which is our family, our spouse, our parents, our sisters, brothers, sons, daughters. They are just there. We do not pause long enough to see them for the treasure they are. Solomon, in our First Reading, asked God for “an understanding heart” so that he could serve God and distinguish right from wrong. Let us ask God today for this understanding heart so that we can clearly see this treasure that is right in our midst in the persons of our family and friends. We don’t have to search for a Holy Grail in some remote part of the world. All we need to do is look in our lives, our present relationships. For it is in these that God speaks to us and reveals Himself to us. He loves us and offers us hope, growth and love. It is in our own lives that we will find hidden treasures and fine pearls. With an understanding heart, which gives us clear vision, we will discover Jesus in the Eucharist under the appearances of Bread and Wine - the pearl of great price for which we should renounce all, so as to possess this Divine Presence in our lives. The Kingdom of God is already here. It’s already available, especially in the Eucharist. All we have to do is claim it. All we have to do is let God reign without reservation in our hearts. If we do that, we will discover a joy that the world cannot know. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:45. In Jesus’ time - before banks, safes and strongboxes - safeguarding precious items by burying them in the ground was a common practice. The scenario of this little parable implies that the finder has stumbled upon a long-forgotten treasure of which the present landowner is oblivious. There is a popular story about a woman who had just learned her cancer was terminal. She invited her pastor over to help her plan her funeral. After deciding on the Order of the Service, the woman made one final request: she wanted to be buried with a Bible in one hand and a fork in the other. The pastor couldn’t hide his surprise. Why in the world would she want to be buried with a fork? The woman explained that the favorite part of any meal for her was when the hostess, while clearing away the dinner dishes, announced “keep your forks.” That meant that there was something more coming - something special - a dessert. The dying woman wanted to remind her loved ones that she was looking forward to something more. Some people look at Christian faith as a bitter pill they have to swallow. Mature believers recognize that it is the dessert. God loves us. Neither life, nor death, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from God’s love. It is a gift. We only have to receive it. Once we have received that gift, however, something invariably happens in our life. We start looking at life in a different way. God appears to Solomon in a dream with an offer he can’t refuse: “Ask of Me anything and I will give it to you.” Talk about a blank check! Solomon could have requested anything he wanted but he knew what he needed in order to face the challenge of leadership. Life is in many ways a search “for the hidden treasure in the field.” The Kingdom is often buried deep within all of us. Unfortunately, we are lured by the promise of a good life in the marketplace and fail to respond to Jesus’ promise of eternal life. The search for the fine pearl is a search to discover one’s unique identity and the search for the hidden treasure is to discover the in-dwelling Trinity. Once an individual discovers these two treasures, everything else pales before them. Jesus presents us with a parade of parables in the Gospels again today as He did in the past two weeks. To describe the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus selected simple, ordinary comparisons: a farmer sowing seeds, weeds growing in a wheat field, a tiny mustard seed, yeast, a buried treasure, a fine pearl, a dragnet. The purpose and point of all these parables is to teach us that the Kingdom which Jesus proclaimed and described is both a heavenly and an earthly reality. Jesus emphasized this essential mixture of the divine and the human when He taught us to pray, “Our Father, Who art in Heaven,” by saying, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”
