Note from the Priests

October 3rd, 2021, 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear St. Paul Parishioners and Benefactors,

I am happy to share with you our financial report for the 2021 Fiscal Year. It was a year of remarkable challenges and successes. We started the fiscal in June 2020, emerging from a shutdown of nearly three months, and ended on June 30, 2021, with Masses back to full capacity. Throughout, we faced almost constant uncertainty while renovating the parish basement and navigating ministry during a pandemic.

The dedication and financial commitment of our parishioners and benefactors, paired with prudent cost-reduction measures, contributed to a year of relative financial health and stability.

After an initial (and significant) drop in revenue tied to the Spring 2020 shutdown, our collections and contributions, our primary sources of revenue, returned to pre-pandemic levels and have remained steady.

Additionally, the short-term challenges of that initial drop in revenue, paired with staff transitions, forced us to come to terms with our demographic and financial realities. We saw an opportunity to build our mission in sustainable and creative new ways.

We believe our mission-focused adjustments will have a long-term positive impact, especially our growing campus ministry. Two of the changes we implemented were the collaboration with St. Charles in religious education for children and a more flexible workforce through our Pastoral Intern program. We were able to reduce overall costs while creating new (and exciting) opportunities for greater interaction between resident and student communities.

To be sure, we still face some major challenges ahead, but our parish is truly blessed to enjoy generous support from our parishioners and benefactors. Over the past year, our community has responded with open hearts, our campus ministry has grown, and our pastoral staff has capitalized on our flourishing campus ministry to build and enhance the broader parish.

On behalf of the entire St. Paul’s community, thank you to everyone who was able to support us financially through the pandemic. Thank you also for your continued support as we improve our ministry.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Patrick Hyde, OPPastor

Note from the PriestsDrop in revenue matched by a reduction of expenses. Last year, we saw a drop in both revenue and expenses compared to the previous year. Our decrease in income came from several factors: lower Sunday collections, the end of our Lilly Grant, lower donations and contributions, and less collected in fees. Apart from the Lilly Grant, the drop in revenue was largely the result of decreased in-person Mass attendance, activities, and donor visits. The decrease in expenses was achieved mostly though reductions in salaries and benefits, as we did not rehire certain positions and have moved towards a more flexible workforce. We also reduced hospitality and program expenses because the combination of COVID protocols and the basement renovation limited what we could do with campus ministry.

Remarkable Generosity. The generous response of our parishioners and benefactors was remarkable given the realities of limited in-person participation at Mass and the inability of our development officers to meet with benefactors in-person.

At the beginning of the last fiscal year, our Sunday collections were down nearly 20% to the previous year. However, the last six months of the fiscal year saw a marked increase in the generosity of our parishioners. Much of this was made possible when regular donors switched to online giving.

We actually exceeded our budgeted donations goal by 25%. Donations in the prior year were higher, howev-er, this is because in the previous fiscal we received two large, unsolicited gifts totaling more than $80,000. When we take that into consideration, the work of our development office to connect with parishioners and benefactors and to exceed our budget is even more impressive.

Causes for Hope. One of the biggest reasons we saw our Sunday collections return was a shift to electronic donations. We plan to continue to move as many of our parishioners and benefactors to electronic giving as possible, because it reduces variability.

Another reason for hope is our new Pastoral Intern Program. This program provides five, full-time employees for our parish, especially for our campus ministry, at a minimal cost to because the interns are responsible for fundraising some of their salaries. Lastly, more people are now willing to attend in-person meetings from our development team. This enables Tom Recker and his assistant to provide greater care for and engagement with our parishioners and benefactors. As a result, we are confident our development revenue will continue to provide the funds necessary for maintaining and even building our ministry now and into the future.

During a time of prayer on Sunday or while viewing the Mass on TV or online, the faithful are encouraged to make an act of Spiritual Communion. This beautiful devotional practice in the Church is a real source of grace in Communion with our Lord. Below is an example of a prayer for Spiritual Communion.

Novena Prayer Group

The Novena Prayer Group at St. Paul invites you to join us on a journey of prayer. We pray short and long Novenas all year round. For more information, contact Anita Park at [email protected].

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into

my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Parish Information and News

A Gift from Your Required Minimum Distribution

As calendar yearend is fast approaching, parishioners aged 70 ½ and up, and who have a qualified retirement plan, must take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from that plan each year. Using this RMD as a charitable gift vehicle, called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a great way to help St. Paul’s meet its mission and vision. A QCD allows you to direct your RMD tax free to St. Paul Catholic Center. You simply instruct your plan’s custodian to directly send all or a portion of your RMD to the charity of your choice (in this case, St. Paul’s). You cannot transfer the RMD to you, and then forward it to the charity; it must be sent directly to us from the plan custodian. A QCD is not counted towards a donor’s gross taxable income (AGI). For some donors, it could lower their Social Security benefits tax, and/or their Medicare premium rate (this is something you would need to discuss with your tax advisor). For further information and to discuss utilizing a QCD, contact Tom Recker, Director of Mission Advancement at either 812/339-5561, ext. 214, or [email protected].
