Welcome to St. Paul’s ChapelPlease add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

If you would like to pray with someone confidentially, for yourself or others, go to the altar rail during communion time.

About this ServiceIn Advent, Christians wait with joy for the coming of Jesus. These four weeks give us time to tidy up our hearts—to take stock of our lives and prepare for all the hope the world inherited when Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem. We look for the star together with faithful people from all over the world. Some of their diverse traditions are reflected in the prayers and songs and sayings in today’s worship.

Together, we invite our savior and friend to return to us once again:

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

The Liturgy of the WordThe First Reading Isaiah 11:1-10 GWMV p. 4

Reader A Reading from the Book of Isaiah.

In an old stump of a tree, like the family tree of Jesse, there will be a new green shoot, and the shoot will grow into a branch. The branch will be the Messiah, and the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him. He will be wise and understanding. He will be strong and confident and know and love the ways of God. He won’t judge a person by what he hears about them or by what they look like. He will see poor people through God’s eyes, and will always be on the side of the powerless people. The wicked people had better watch out when he’s around. He’ll wear goodness and faithfulness like we wear coats and hats. Amazing things will happen—wolves will be friends with little lambs. Leopards will get along with the goats. Calves and lions will play together. And a little child will be in charge of them all. Cows and bears will share the pasture. And their babies will take naps side by side. Lions will eat hay like oxen do. Babies will play with snakes and the snakes won’t bite them. There won’t be any pain anymore, and all the earth will be covered with knowing God, just like the waters of the sea cover the earth. And that branch from Jesse’s family tree will be a hero to all the people of the earth. Kings will wonder who he is, and wherever the Messiah is, that place will be beautiful.

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Please stand as you are able.

Music: Zimbabwe Alleluia, Abraham Maraire (1944-1999)

The Holy Gospel Matthew 3:1-12 GWMV p. 6

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Deacon A long time ago, John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, showed up in the desert, shouting, “You had better change your ways, people. For God is very near.” The prophet Isaiah wrote about John when he said, “There is someone out in the desert telling people to make way for the Lord because he’s coming.”

John was a funny kind of guy. He wore camel skins with a leather belt, and he ate bugs and wild honey. He attracted a lot of attention and people came from the cities to check him out. They asked him to baptize them, knowing they needed to change.

Page 5: St. Paul s Chapel to St. Paul’s Chapel ... Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! The Entrance Rite Acclamation EOW p. 50 At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able

5

John saw people he thought were hypocrites because they thought they were God’s special people who did no wrong. When he saw them he yelled at them, “You are a big pile of snakes. You’d better change your ways too. Don’t think just because Abraham was your ancestor that you’re going to get by with things. God could make all of these rocks here children of Abraham just like you if he wanted to. If you don’t listen to God now, deep in your heart, you might as well be a chopped-down tree that’s thrown into the fire. I’ll baptize you with water, but someone much, much greater than me is coming soon, and he will pour the Holy Spirit on you and light your souls on fire for God. He is ready to make everything new for God.”

The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward.

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer C, adapted BCP p. 369

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant God of might and mercy, Creator of the universe, your goodness calls forth every praise we can speak.

People Glory to you for ever and ever.

Celebrant You made all things: the stars that spread across the sky; this abundant earth we call home; waters and weather, creatures great and small.

People All gifts come from you, O God.

Celebrant You created human beings from the first elements. You made us able to think, to move, to love, and to remember. You charged us with the care of your world. But we turned against you and against each other. We chose a path apart from you.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and the wise, you taught us how to live in harmony with you. When it was time, you sent your only Son to be born of your servant, Mary; in him, you fulfilled your Law and opened for us the way of freedom and peace.

People Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are healed.

Page 9: St. Paul s Chapel to St. Paul’s Chapel ... Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! The Entrance Rite Acclamation EOW p. 50 At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able

Celebrant For all of this, we praise you, together with the heavenly choir of angels, apostles, saints, and the faithful from every generation. With them, and with your children all around the world, we sing of your goodness and glory:

Sanctus

Music: Composer of melody unknown; based on a two-part version as taught by Pablo D. Sosa (b. 1933)

Celebrant And so, Creator, we who have been redeemed by Jesus, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his friends, saying, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Together, we remember all Jesus has done to redeem us, and we offer you this sacrifice of thanksgiving.

All We celebrate his death and resurrection, And we look for the day of his coming.

Celebrant Almighty God of our ancestors; God of Abraham and Sarah, of Isaac and Jacob and Rahab and Ruth; God and Father of our Savior Jesus Christ: open our eyes to your light shining through the world around us. Help us to come to this table for strength, and not merely for comfort; for renewal and not merely pardon. Through your grace, may the food and drink we receive together make us one body and one spirit in Jesus, focused and inspired to serve the world in his name.

People Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Celebrant Accept our prayers and our praise, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, throughout all generations.

All AMEN.

The Trinity Charter SocietyOver the past 320 years, bequests by parishioners and friends have made an important contribution to Trinity’s financial foundation, extending the parish’s ministry in our neighborhood and throughout the world. You can be part of this legacy by joining those who have declared their support of Trinity’s future ministry and mission by remembering Trinity Wall Street in their estate plans. You will then be invited to join The Trinity Charter Society, whose members have their names inscribed in the Trinity Memorial Book in the Chapel of All Saints and receive invitations to special events. If you have provided for Trinity in your will or through another type of planned gift and would like to become a member of The Trinity Charter Society, please contact Willem Brans, Director of Development, at 212.602.9692 or [email protected].

Hurricane Recovery and Rebuilding Fund Trinity is raising funds to assist communities devastated by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti and across the Caribbean and southeastern United States. Your donation will provide funding directly to trusted leaders and mission partners, including local parishes. The storm directly affected millions of people in the United States and Caribbean and caused billions of dollars in damage to property and infrastructure. Trinity is committed to helping local communities beyond initial relief efforts as they recover and rebuild in the months and years to come. Special donation envelopes are available at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel. You may also donate online at trinitywallstreet.org/give. Trinity welcomes donations of any amount. Please give generously.

Contact her at [email protected] to set up an introduction.

Congregational Voice“In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35). I like this verse because as Sisters, it is our responsibility to give to others. I don’t like receiving; I’d rather give. —Sr. Gloria Shirley, SSM

Prayer RequestsPrayer requests may be found on a separate card printed weekly and located at the back of the churches. The list is cleared at the end of each month. To add names to the list, email [email protected].

This is a service of Holy Eucharist according to Rite II, which begins on page 355 of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Scripture readings are appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) and are excerpted from God’s Word, My Voice (GWMV) by Lyn Zill Briggs, which is a version of Biblical texts considered more accessible for children. Hymns come from The Hymnal 1982; Wonder, Love, and Praise (WLP); and Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS). The Prayers of the People and other service elements usually taken from the BCP may also come from additional sources as noted,

including Enriching Our Worship (EOW) and the Book of Occasional Services (BOS).
