Dear Friends,
What do we take with us from Christmas
into the New Year? Most people are so ex-
hausted from getting ready for Christmas
and cleaning up and putting away Christ-
mas that they move into the New Year for-
getting that God offers gifts that sustain us
beyond this short season, year after year.
The greatest things happen in the middle of
our busy, overscheduled lives and the trick
is noticing what God is doing, even when we
are busy – or worried or overwhelmed (or
underwhelmed) or struggling or grieving,
whatever we are doing or feeling.
God invites us to take in a deep breath and
to put all our senses into service, so that we
can see, hear, smell, touch, and taste what
God is doing all around us:
To see light shining in the darkness,
To hear wondrous tidings and songs
of joy,
To smell the aromas of a meal
lovingly prepared,
To touch each other’s hands with a
greeting of God’s peace,
To taste in bread and wine that God is
with us.
We are called away from our busy lives to
rest, and to ponder, and to celebrate, and to
notice; To notice God, alive and at work in
the world around us and to notice God, alive
and at work in and through us.
We can take what we notice in the quiet
moments we set aside during the Christ-
mas season and allow it to influence how
we live into the New Year. We can answer
God’s invitation to be transformed. Like the
shepherds keeping watch over their flocks
the night that Jesus was born, God calls us
from action and leads us back into action.
Angels, shepherds, wise men, and later –
fishermen, tax collectors, and every kind of
sinner…soldiers, merchants, workers, wom-
en with their children, widows, weavers,
farmers, the lame, the blind, the deaf, the
leper, even the dead were transformed by
the coming of Christ into the world. You
and I are also part of this simple story that
has the power to transform our lives and
the life of the world.
Blessings and Joy this Christmas and in the
coming year,
Pastor Katherine Cartwright Knodel

Growing Into the Next 150 Years What’s Next in the Transition Process?
The congregation is moving into an exciting time! As the 150th year continues, the pastoral transition moves into the next phase, the Call Process. The Call Process ends with calling of St. Paul’s next regularly called Pastor and the conclusion of the congregation’s relationship with the Interim Pastor about two weeks before the new pastor begins serving here.
(1) When the Congregational Profile has been approved by the Synod’s Office of the Bishop, a Call Committee, appointed by the Congregation Council, will be installed. The Call Committee receives the names of possible pastoral candidates in a highly confidential process.
(2) After the Call Committee interviews pastoral candidates and hears them preach, it eventually recommends one pastoral candidate to the Congregation Council. If the council agrees, the Council calls a special congre-gational meeting; this is done in coordination with the Office of the Bishop which appoints a deputy to run the meeting. Normally, the pastoral candidate leads worship and preaches at a Sunday morning worship service, which is followed by a special congregational meeting as described in the congregation’s constitu-tion.
(3) If the congregation decides to issue a call to the pastoral candidate, and the pastoral candidate accepts, then he or she becomes the next regularly called pastor of the congregation.
Early in the new year, we will offer a question and answer time for those who have questions about the process going forward. Please watch the bulletin and announcements for details.
How can you help? Continue to attend worship regularly and participate in the life of the congre-gation through your offerings of time, talent, and financial gifts. Keep up-to-date with printed and verbal announcements. Ask questions if you have questions. Correct information will come through official channels. Please do not pass on information received by other means. Come to the annual meeting on February 2.
A SPECIAL HOLIDAY NOTE! Greetings from the Windy City!
Paige turns 4 later this month. Oliver is 2! Madison is 15 while Jackson is 12. All are great.
Jenn and Carl traveled to Japan and London this year. Dennis and Katie got engaged in Germany on Oct. 1st.
Jesse and I were fortunate to see the remaining ice glaciers in June.
Have a happy and safe New Year. We miss St. Paul’s!
Love, Dina and Jesse (AROCENA)

The new box of offering envelopes is available in the
narthex. Please pick up your box. This year, in an effort to
replenish and build up St. Paul’s Endowment Fund, three
Endowment Fund Envelopes, spaced throughout the year,
have been placed in the 2020 box. As you prayerfully consid-
er your offerings for 2020, consider supporting this fund
which supports all ministries at St. Paul’s. Many years ago,
St. Paul’s members began this fund to invest in and ensure
the mission and ministry of the church. The Endowment
Fund serves us well in supplementing the income of the
church when it is needed. Now it is time for the current con-
gregation to ensure the future of St. Paul’s. Contributions to
the fund are also welcome at any time. Be sure to designate
“Endowment Fund” on the memo line of your check. May
God bless us as we move forward in ministry.
