Christians look to Mary Queen Pope John Paul II

Christ is King not only because he is Son of God, but also because he is the Redeemer; Mary is Queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, associated as the new Eve with the new Adam, she co-operated in the work of the redemption of the human race (AAS 46 [1954] 635). In Mark's Gospel, we read that on the day of the Ascension the Lord Jesus "was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God" (16:19). In biblical language "to sit at the right hand of God" means sharing his sovereign power. Sitting "at the right hand of the Father", he establishes his kingdom, God's kingdom. Taken up into heaven, Mary is associated with the power of her Son and is dedicated to the extension of the Kingdom, sharing in the diffusion of divine grace in the world. In looking at the analogy between Christ's Ascension and Mary's Assumption, we can conclude that Mary, in dependence on Christ, is the Queen who possesses and exercises over the universe a sovereignty granted to her by her Son. The title of Queen does not of course replace that of Mother: her queenship remains a corollary of her particular maternal mission and simply expresses the power conferred on her to carry out that mission. Citing Pius IX's Bull Ineffabilis Deus, the Supreme Pontiff highlights this maternal dimension of the Blessed Virgin's queenship: "Having a motherly affection for us and being concerned for our salvation, she extends her care to the whole human race. Appointed by the Lord as Queen of heaven and earth, raised above all the choirs of angels and the whole celestial hierarchy of saints, sitting at the right hand of her only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, she obtains with great certainty what she asks with her motherly prayers; she obtains what she seeks and it cannot be denied her" (cf. AAS 46 [1954] 636-637). One can conclude that the Assumption favours Mary's full communion not only with Christ, but with each one of us: she is beside us, because her glorious state enables her to follow us in our daily earthly journey. As we read again in St Germanus: "You dwell spiritually with us and the greatness of your vigilance over us makes your communion of life with us stand out" (Hom. 1, PG 98, 344). Thus far from creating distance between her and us, Mary's glorious state brings about a continuous and caring closeness. She knows everything that happens in our life and supports us with maternal love in life's trials. Taken up into heavenly glory, Mary dedicates herself totally to the work of salvation in order to communicate to every living person the happiness granted to her. She is a Queen who gives all that she possesses, participating above all in the life and love of Christ.

María, Reina del universo Papa Juan Pablo II

Cristo es rey no sólo porque es Hijo de Dios, sino tam-bién porque es Redentor. María es reina no sólo porque es Madre de Dios, sino también porque, asociada como nueva Eva al nuevo Adán, cooperó en la obra de la redención del género humano (AAS 46 [1954] 635). En el evangelio según san Marcos leemos que el día de la Ascensión el Señor Jesús «fue elevado al cielo y se sentó a la diestra de Dios» (Mc 16, 19). En el lenguaje bíblico, «sentarse a la diestra de Dios» significa compartir su poder soberano. Sentándose «a la diestra del Padre», él instaura su reino, el reino de Dios. Elevada al cielo, María es asociada al poder de su Hijo y se dedica a la extensión del Reino, participando en la difusión de la gracia divina en el mundo. Observando la analogía entre la Ascensión de Cristo y la Asunción de María, podemos concluir que, subordinada a Cristo, María es la reina que posee y ejerce sobre el univer-so una soberanía que le fue otorgada por su Hijo mismo. El título de Reina no sustituye, ciertamente, el de Madre: su realeza es un corolario de su peculiar misión materna, y ex-presa simplemente el poder que le fue conferido para cum-plir dicha misión. NO CELLS OR VIDEO GAMES IN THE CHURCH We have noticed again an increase in the use of cell phones dur-ing Church services as well as an increase in the use of phone games and other video games during Mass in the Church. We ask the parents to give a good example by teaching respect to their children during Mass. The Mass period is a sacred and prayerful period and other people are unjustly distracted by the noise of your cell phones or by the person in front playing video games while in Church. PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL AND CONSID-ERATE with the right of others to pray and worship in PEACE and SILENCE. Also a reminder that NO CHEWING GUM OR FOOD IS ALLOWED IN THE CHURCH. Thank you for help-ing us to make SPC a more conducive place for worship!

Think About Life… Sometimes you hear people argue that abortion should be legal if the baby would have a low quality of life. When people make this argument, the first question to ask is, “Wait a minute… what do you mean by ‘quality of life?’” Usual-ly they’re talking about babies who will be disabled or poor. But having a disability doesn’t mean someone is going to have a low quality of life, and neither does being poor. If we believe that quality of life comes from having physical health and money, then the less of these things we have, the more likely we are to think we have a low quality of life. But Christians believe that a greater quality of life can be experi-enced by giving and receiving faith, hope, and love, and all of the virtues that go along with them. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t care about tending to the material needs of others. Poverty, illness, disabilities, and physi-cal defects can be serious burdens for the people who experience them, and everyone has a responsibility to help ease their bur-dens. But killing unborn people because they might be born poor, ill, disabled, or with a physical defect makes as much sense as lining up all born people who have the same conditions and killing them because we think they have a “low quality of life.” First of all, one person should never be allowed to decide what kind of quality and worth another person’s life has. Secondly, just because someone is born poor does not mean she has to stay poor, and just because someone is disabled doesn’t mean he can’t participate in any of the human activities that make life worth living. Thirdly, which of the following is truly compassionate – helping people reach a better quality of life, or killing people who are in need because we think their lives don’t have any val-ue? Mother Teresa (now known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta) was a Catholic nun who lived in Calcutta, India, and took care of tens of thousands of the poorest and sickest people on earth for over 45 years. But she once said that America is the poorest country in the world because we do not know how to love. She said, “It is a great poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.” Another side of the “quality of life” argument is the claim that abortion is justifiable for babies who are diagnosed with termi-nal illnesses. After all, they are going to die anyway, so what kind of quality of life can they possibly have? First, it is very difficult for doctors to predict exactly when someone is going to die, and they are frequently wrong. Secondly, if you really think about it, it isn’t fair to condemn someone to death because “they are going to die anyway.” You are going to die someday, too. That would not be a good excuse for someone to kill you now. Recall Mary at the foot of the cross. She knew her son was going to die, but she didn’t run around begging the Roman soldiers to “put Him out of His mis-ery.” She stayed with Jesus out of love, commitment, care, and compassion, recognizing that His life had a purpose even to the very end. Thirdly, just because someone may soon die doesn’t mean that person cannot experience a high quality of life. Quality of life is not ultimately about how long you live; it’s about experiencing and participating in love. If every person is loved and wanted by Jesus, then wouldn’t every unborn child in some way be able to experience the highest quality of life – even those who are diag-nosed with terminal illnesses and may not live very long? If we worked as hard to love and want every unborn child as some people work to keep abortion legal, we could help those children experience a very high quality of life, indeed.

Think About Life… We often hear people argue that women need legal abortion in order to achieve success in their lives. By this, they usually mean that having an abortion will make it easier for women to finish school, get ahead in their careers, or earn a comfortable salary. But this claim contains a very skewed notion of “success.” People who are willing to sacrifice their own dreams for the sake of another human being often feel MORE successful than when they were pursuing their own educational or career goals, or spending money on things they wanted. Christians believe that true “success” is about making a differ-ence to other people and allowing God’s unconditional Love into our lives. If you agree with that, then success cannot be de-fined by how many things you own, or by how smart, talented, beautiful, or able-bodied you are. Abortion advocates frequently claim that if abortion becomes illegal, women will lose opportunities for success. But this ig-nores the fact that most parents believe the greatest accomplish-ment they’ve ever had was giving life to their children and rais-ing them. It also ignores the fact that there are many ways to pursue your dreams without having to kill your own child. Sometimes when people use the success argument to support abortion, they aren’t talking about the success of the mother or the father. They’re talking about the baby’s chances of success in life. Some people believe that abortion should be legal if, during the pregnancy, the unborn baby is diagnosed with a disability, a serious illness, or a defect. They claim these children can never be successful. The first major problem with this attitude is that these diagnoses are frequently wrong – which means that the abortion would kill a healthy baby. Secondly, and more importantly, it isn’t true that people cannot be successful just because they are disabled. We wouldn’t say that to an adult person with a disability, so why is it okay to say it about someone who is unborn with a disability? Just because people can’t do things in the same way that others can doesn’t mean they can’t have a successful life. The composer Ludwig van Beethoven was deaf; the famous physicist Stephen Hawking is quadriplegic, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (the 32nd President of the United States of America) had polio and was confined to a wheelchair his entire life; the Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is severely dyslexic. These people accomplished amazing things with their lives, despite their disabilities. In extreme cases, there are some people born with disabilities that are so severe that they actually cannot do many physical or mental activities like walking, talking, and responding to others. But Christians believe that true success does not come from our physical or mental abilities. It comes from making a positive difference to other people, and surrendering to God’s Love. The more we make a positive difference to others and the more we surrender to God, the more free we are to find true success. Who says that a person with severe physical or mental disabili-ties cannot make a positive difference to other people? Who says she cannot surrender everything to God? In fact, many disabled people find that it is easier to focus on what’s really important in life – like family, friends, love, generosity, patience, and putting their faith in God – because of their disability.
