The Greek word “pentecostes” means “fiftieth.” On the fiftieth day after Passover, Jews celebrated the “Feast of Weeks” or “Pentecost.” The celebration commemorated the Covenant of Mt. Sinai. Fifty days after leaving Egypt, the Israelites arrived at Mt. Sinai. There they encountered the Lord in fire and wind and quaking. They believed that somehow the Lord would bring all peoples and nations to worship him at his holy temple.   With this background, we can appre-ciate the powerful coming of the Holy Spirit fifty days after Easter. The “signs” of quaking and fire recall the covenant of Sinai; this is the inauguration of the new covenant! The apostles had expected that everything would be perfect when Jesus came again in glory.   He comes in the Holy Spirit with power and changes timid men into bold men; he changes the crass into the wise; he changes the weak into the strong; and the sinful into the holy ones. They are not perfect, but they are to be the loyal witnesses to Christ. They go forth to proclaim that salvation has come to all peoples. Sacrament of Reconciliation

Saturday: 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2020 Dear Parishioners, One of the prayers I remember in growing up was the prayer to the Holy Spirit. This prayer is simple and direct and evolved in the antiphons and hymn of every liturgical tradition, especially in the Pentecost sequence. As we celebrate Pentecost, let’s pray the following: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” This weekend we bring our season of Easter to a close. The baptismal candle will be once again placed near the baptismal font, the Easter tree, and other Easter decorations will come down. We return to what is called “Ordinary Time.” On this Pentecost Sunday, we hear the experience of the apostles at the coming of the Holy Spirit. In the Acts of the Apostles, it states: “They were all in one place together. Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the house in which they were. Then, there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” Wow! What an experience! Thus the Church was born and continues today with the Holy Spirit filling us with His presence, challenging us to proclaim, live, and witness to Christ and His life. A couple of items that I would like to share with you. The Bishop has recently granted all pastors permission to celebrate Confirmation and First Communion in our parishes. We will organize this celebration when we can have more than 9 people present. As soon as we hear that the governor will allow more than this minimum, you will be contacted for differing times. I also will be doing the same for the RCIA people who also have been waiting for the Sacra-ments of Initiation. Because of the size of our groups, we have to wait until the numbers are increased. So continue to be patient. It will happen this summer. Also Kathy Harman, our parish nurse, is retiring from her position as the parish nurse. She has given of herself in this role and I personally cannot thank her enough for all that she has done for us. Her last day will be the last day of May. I know that when I came to St. Peter Church we were blessed to have Marty Venvertloh in this position and then God blessed us with Kathy as her replacement. I am opening up this position to anyone in the parish who might be interested. This is not a full time position, (about 20-25 hours a week). If anyone is interested in this position and are qualified as a nurse, please send your resume to me. I am counting on God blessing us again with a compassionate and caring person. The person will be responsible to visit the hospital, the home-bound, the elderly in nursing homes and anyone else who needs the healing touch of our Lord and this community of faith.

PSR Teacher Sought for 2020-2021 School Year Our children are our greatest gift from God. The parents are the front line of teachers of our faith. Our PSR teachers are a valuable part to help the additional teaching of our young people. I am personally asking for someone to step up to the wonderful opportunity to help our PSR First Graders as their teacher. PSR meets on Wednesday nights from 615 p.m. to 730 p.m. Please think and pray about helping. Ask one of our teachers and the rewards they have experienced. You need to have a desire to help teach the faith to our children. Materials are provided and compensation is paid. Please reach out to me with questions. Thank you for your consideration. Another Prayer For The Current Virus Situation

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

All Masses Until further notice, there are no public Masses. During this time, the Catholic faithful are dispensed from their Sunday obli-gation and are encouraged to pray with the Scripture readings of the Mass and watch the Mass on our parish’s YouTube chan-nel. In place of reception of the Blessed Sacrament, the faithful are encouraged to make a spiritual communion, to pray the Rosary, and to pray for the end to the pandemic, the healing of those afflicted, and strength for those caring for the sick. The church remains open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. every day for personal prayer. Additionally, we will continue to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Easter Flower Offerings The names sent in for memorials with the Easter flower offer-ings will be listed at a later date, once public Masses resume.

Fr. Leo’s column continued…. If you haven’t picked up a yard sign which helps us endure the pandemic in which we find ourselves, please do so. They are in the Narthex of the Church or outside the Martha Jane Room. A free will offering would be appreciated. These signs declare what we are about in this time of crisis in our community. For as they boldly state, we Rejoice in hope, endure in afflic-tion, persevere in prayer. (Romans 12:12) Once again I encourage you to use your parish envelopes to support the Roman Catholic Cemeteries of Quincy. As you know the individual families have what they call perpetual income for maintaining these ceme-teries. However, being on the Cemetery Board, it is quite evident that we depend on this collection as well as other donations to make any improvements to our grounds. So please consider assisting us as we try to make our cemeteries places of dignity for the deceased. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: Bulletin Bloopers: Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Miss Charlene Mason sang, “I will not pass this way again,” giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What is Hell?” Come early and listen to the choir practice. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Prayer and medica-tion to follow.

Paper Copy of Bulletin We will try to keep paper copies of the bulletin in the Narthex if you want to stop by and pick one up.

Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2020 Dear Parishioners,

One of the prayers I remember in growing up was the prayer to the Holy Spirit. This prayer is simple and direct and evolved in the antiphons and hymn of every liturgical tradition, especially in the Pentecost sequence. As we celebrate Pentecost, let’s pray the following:

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen.”

This weekend we bring our season of Easter to a close. The baptismal candle will be once again placed near the baptismal font, the Easter tree, and other Easter decorations will come down. We return to what is called “Ordinary Time.”

On this Pentecost Sunday, we hear the experience of the apostles at the coming of the Holy Spirit.

We will organize this celebration when we can havemore than 9 people present.
