FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners, My summer vacation began with a surreal plane flight. On boarding, I noticed the cabin was packed, but the two places next to my aisle seat were empty. The closing of the plane door was announced, when a young couple, both attractive in appearance and elegant in dress, ran up the aisle and plopped into the two places next to me. My guess was that they were from Eastern Europe. As they put their carry-ons down in front of them, I heard distinctive yelping noises coming from the bags. The passengers opened their cases and two frisky young dogs jumped up on to their owners’ laps. The hyperactive canines continued to frolic about energetically and noisily. I bit my tongue. As the owner of a duck, a rabbit and pair of doves, I remained animal-tolerant, certain that the flight attendant would resolve the situation. When she passed our row for a final check before take-off, she reacted firmly: the airline required that the animals remain in their containers during the flight, since some passengers might be allergic or afraid. The young woman pleaded ―No speak English.‖ The attendant said, ―What language do you speak? Do you speak Spanish?‖. The young woman seemed to nod yes. At which point the attendant (for a reason that I can not fathom) turned to me and said, ―Tell them in Spanish about the airline’s rules on animals. These dogs were listed as service animals, not companion animals.‖ I complied, but the young woman clearly did not speak or understand Spanish. In broken, heavily accented English, she said, ―But they are my babies.‖ The attendant moved on in a huff.

The dogs remained uncased, loud and all over the place. I was certain that, before the plane landed, I would be soiled or bitten by one of these critters. The flight attendant returned with other flight crew members, and this time there was a radical change of heart. They all fawned over the ―cute puppies‖, asking their names, breed, ages, etc. They stopped by several times during the flight, inquiring if the dogs needed anything or could they bring the dogs some water. At one point, each of the owners carried the dogs to the lavatory (the first-class one, of course). Don’t ask.

In deplaning, the dogs got an endearing, goodbye pat on the head from the flight crew and I, instead of the usual ―Have a nice day‖, I got ―Thanks for being such a good sport about the dogs.‖

I thought back to W.C. Fields, the great vaudeville comedian. When appearing on a enter-tainment bill, he always demanded not to follow an animal act. Why? They always steal the show!

-Father Jerry Jecewiz
