Affirmation Sunday for Confirmation Candidates September 17

Sunday, September 17 at the 10:30 Mass the Confirmation Can-didates for 2018 will state their intentions to continue their Catho-lic Christian formation and their openness to God’s call in their life. After Mass there will be an informational meeting and light lunch in Morris Hall for all Candidates and at least one parent.

From the Desk Of Fr. John Baptismal font…was dedicated and blessed last Saturday during the 4:30 Mass. There were three children baptized…Zachary, Elliana and Elliott. We rejoice together with the families of these children and pledge to support them in raising them in the faith.

The font is to have a prominent place in the church, which is accessible to all. This is where we all begin our life in Christ and in the community of the Church. It is here that we are ‘born again of water and the Holy Spirit.’ We share in the death and resurrection of Christ and are called to live the Gospel taking up the cross each day. We desire that this resurrected life will continue to grow in us until the day of Christ’s return.

However, we are to commit ourselves to this journey and intentionally choose to live our Chris-tian life each day. It is a life of serving and shar-ing that we live even when it costs us suffering and sacrifice. Let us commit ourselves anew to being disciples of the Lord and fulfilling the mis-sion of sharing our faith with others.

Thank you to all who helped make this a worthy celebration of being a disciple in the dedication and blessing of the new Baptismal font. Several gave significantly to fund the project of which we all are so grateful. Kathie Throm and Terry Falline did much of the design work, and Phil Throm was the project manager. Thank you goes also to Water Structures, Throm Construction, Ford Marble & Tile, Gould Flooring, and our dedi-cated staff who prepared the music and ceremo-nial booklet.

The disciples have much to learn about the true identity and purpose of Jesus’ mission. They are steeped in the nationalistic fervor of their day and associated ‘Messiah’ with military and political power. Jesus tries to help them un-derstand that He will go to His death lovingly do-ing the Father’s will. They only want success in very human terms causing Jesus to offer a stern correction to Peter.

The place of the disciple is to be behind the Mas-ter…following Him. That is where Jesus tells Pe-ter to be. So Jesus continues to form the disci-

ples…we realize that He is still forming us. We need to learn more about what it means to live our faith fully and how we can pass it on to the next generation. We can only do that if we are fully committed and consciously witnessing our faith in our everyday lives.

We move several chapters deeper into the Gospel of Matthew and the lessons Jesus is teaching His disciples. When He formed the community of faith, there were bound to be differ-ences that could harm the unity that He intended. The question is what happens when that unity is disturbed when someone(s) act against what Je-sus has established as the norm for community life…the life of mutual respect and love.

Jesus teaches how to correct an erring mem-ber…with respect and in private! We tend to drag all the faults of others into the open so they can be judged by the court of public opinion. Jesus teaches us the proper way of healing the com-munity after the wound of sin has disrupted it.

We are not to think or act as if we are the final judge. We need to work always for healing and reconciliation so that peace can be restored to the community. We are to pray for one another so that healing may bring about the result of the restoration of tranquility. Jesus urges us to rec-ognize His presence in the midst of those who gather in His name… ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name…there am I in the midst of them.’

The community of the Church is essential for our salvation. The community of the Church is es-sential for the living out of our faith-life. The com-munity is essential for our being nourished in the life of Christ at the Eucharist. The community is essential for our undergoing forgiveness and rec-onciliation. Despite the contrary movement and tendency of our culture…community is key to our life of faith. So healing and forgiveness is also key to our life in Christ.

ACSA…is a simple way of saying Annual Catholic Services Appeal…or our Bishop’s appeal for funding all the ministries and services he must provide to our Diocese. Be ready to wel-come and support our Bishop’s appeal for ACSA!

Please pray for the following men and women who are serving in our armed forces:

Second Collection for Harvey Victims The United States Conference of Catholic bishops has re-quested that a special collection be held this weekend for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Your donations will support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and also provide pastoral and rebuilding support to im-pacted dioceses. Please place your donations in the second collection. If you are writing a check, make it payable to Ss. Peter and Paul Church, as all donations will be gathered and sent to the Di-ocese for distribution to Catholic Charities. You may also donate online at the Catholic Charities website, www.catholiccharitiesusa.org. Please continue to pray for those suffering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey and for the relief workers.

A special memorial was held for Grady Simpson on Septem-ber 1. Grady, who passed away suddenly on August 24 was a member of our custodial staff. There were special prayers dur-ing Mass and the school chil-dren made cards.

ACSA Kicks Off Next Weekend

The Annual Catholic Services Ap-peal (ACSA) begins next week-end. The programs, services and ministries supported by the ACSA meet the needs of Catholics and others in our Diocese. In addition, our parish uses many of these support services. The theme for this year’s appeal is “Go Therefore and Make Disci-ples.” Christ calls us to consider our gifts and to return a portion of them to him through our parish and the larger Church, our dio-cese. We can all work together to care for the Church’s people by sharing God’s gifts through this annual appeal.
