TRANSCRIPT
Victorian breeder Bruce Wilson’s
patience with valuable filly and
future Glentree Thoroughbreds
broodmare Night Express
(Fastnet Rock) could be about to pay off with the
lightly raced three-year-old set for her maiden
test at stakes level in Adelaide tomorrow.
The Henry Dwyer-trained filly, a dominant
four-length winner at Morphettville earlier this
month, returns to South Australia for a title at
the H C Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in a bid
to enhance her already considerable appeal as
a breeding prospect.
A win at Swan Hill in northern Victoria
last October on her first start arguably did not
do Night Express’ ability justice, but Glentree
Pastoral manager Luke Simpson says the
victory backed up the stable’s high opinion of
the homebred filly.
The fact Night Express has made it to a
stakes race five starts later underlines her
talent. Continued on page 2>>

Glentree hoping to strike with promising Night Express in Adelaide

“She is a very well bred filly and she is a
three-quarter sister to Sea Siren, so any black type is highly valuable to us,”
Simpson told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Due to timing with her last prep, it always stacked up that if she came
up this prep then Adelaide was always going to be a likely target.
“Pretty much from day one there was always something a little bit
special about her. She was quite a standout filly in the paddock and from
early doors she won quite a strong maiden beating another good filly (It’s
Kind Of Magic), so from that it gave us confidence that she was up to a
good level of ability and hopefully we will find out more on Saturday.”
Promising apprentice Lachie Neindorf retains the ride in the $100,000
race from barrier one.
“Henry has been very pleased with her post her last win. Everything is
on track. She’s been eating up and working well since, so everything bodes
well heading into Saturday,” Simpson said.
“She showed a lot of natural speed, particularly in Adelaide, so she
will at least be up there somewhere. If something wanted to go crazy, we
wouldn’t be too afraid to take a sit but you would imagine that she will be
right up there in the race.”
Her performance will also determine whether the bar is raised again
for Night Express.
He said: “It is a matter of getting through Saturday and then we will
assess where she is at. If she is up to that grade, I am sure Henry will have
bigger things in mind but if not, then we will reevaluate where we head
this prep.”
Glentree Pastoral, owned by Wilson whose father Alan founded Reece
Plumbing, purchased Night Express’ dam Express Street (Street Sense)
privately after she was passed in at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast
National Broodmare Sale.
Wilson and Simpson then elected to mate her with Coolmore’s
champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill), resulting in Night Express
becoming a three-quarter sister to three-time Group 1-winning mare Sea
Siren.
Express Street is one of about 20 broodmares owned under the
Glentree Pastoral banner.
“She was a private purchase for us, the mare herself, and then we bred
her to Fastnet Rock to get that three-quarter relation to Sea Siren. Because
she was a nice individual we decided to keep her and race her ourselves,”
he said.
“She has got a nice Snitzel yearling filly that we will retain as well and
Henry will train her for us.”
Express Street is due to foal to Arrowfield Stud’s first season sire The
Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in August and continues Glentree’s large
investment in high-quality breeding stock which also includes Dee Nine
Elle (Duporth), a stakes-placed half-sister to this season’s The Everest
(1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes (Rubick).
“We like to give them every opportunity possible. By doing that it helps
getting results not only in the sales ring but on the track as well,” he said.
“We have also been keeping a handful of fillies and putting them
through our racing system with the view of putting them into our
broodmare band down the track, so it’s been quite exciting.”www.magicmillions.com.au

Eleven Eleven elevated to stable star status
Greg Hickman does not put Eleven Eleven
(Fastnet Rock) in the same class as his retired
star Pierata (Pierro), who will stand at Aquis
Farm later this year, but he expects the three-
year-old to more than hold his own against
strong company. Runner-up in the Magic
Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m), Eleven
Eleven ran fifth first-up in the Arrowfield 3YO
Sprint (registered as Royal Sovereign Stakes)
(Gr 2, 1200m) and is an acceptor for tomorrow’s
Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m). "He's a
pretty tough horse like Pierata, especially as
he's got older and stronger," Hickman said. "He
is a funny horse. He only does enough in his
trackwork. He doesn't make you turn around
and go, 'Wow, let's go boy.' But he looks really
well and he hasn't taken a backwards step since
his last run."
Firm track to suit VillamiGerald Ryan is glad to see firmer ground for
his talented filly Villami (Foxwedge) for her
upcoming race in tomorrow’s Hawkesbury
Rush (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill. Ryan believes
punters will see a different filly: “She was boxing
on really well until the 200-metre mark (last
start) but then Vegadaze hung out and he was
taking her out into the heavy ground,” Ryan told
AAP. “As soon as she got into the heavier part of
the track she just lost her legs. She has had four
runs on rain-affected ground, two at Rosehill
which have been terrible and two at Randwick
which have been good. I'm expecting her to
bounce back.” Ryan will also saddle Albumin
(Foxwedge) in the same race.
In Her Time to bow outIn Her Time (Time Thief) will make her final
start in the Hawkesbury Crown (Gr 3, 1300m)
off just a seven-day back up. Trainer Kris Lees
admits the quick turnaround is an unknown for
the nine-time winner, including two victories
at Group 1 level and $3.7 million prize-money.
“That is the only thing she has never done
before,” Lees said. “I’ve only had her for about
18 months but she has raced at a high level
all the way through and won a Lightning. She
hasn’t had the best feet but funnily enough,
they’ve never been better than this preparation,
and she is lightly raced, she has only had 30
starts.” In Her Time will be sold at next month’s
Inglis Chairman’s Sale but Lees will retain a link
to the family through the mare’s two-year-old
half-sister Glowing Red (Artie Schiller), who is
currently unraced.
Sacred Falls filly chasing stakes winIcebath (Sacred Falls) will attempt to secure
her first stakes victory at Rosehill tomorrow
when she contests the Hawkesbury Guineas
(Gr 3, 1400m). Icebath was hopelessly
unlucky last time out in the South Pacific
Classic (Listed, 1400m), striking all sorts
of trouble before flashing home for second
behind the Hong
Kong-bound Indy
Car (Sebring). “She
has come through
her last start well
and she seems in
good order,” trainer Brad
Widdup said. “This preparation, she has been
excellent. She ran great last start, it was just
unlucky. It didn’t pan out for her, it’s just one
of those things with racing. Unfortunately she
couldn’t win, but I think she raced very well.
I will probably tip her out after Saturday. I
don’t think I will go much further with her.
We’ll look after her and she is going to be
better next preparation.”
Mask Of Time after overdue victoryAlthough Mask Of Time’s (Holy Roman
Emperor) winning strike rate is not all that
high, the gelding’s record over the course and
distance of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3,
1500m) suggests he could play a major role in
the race. Trained by Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace, his only win in 22 Australian starts has
been a dead-heat with Best Of Days (Azamour)
in the Coongy Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) during the
2018 spring. Tomorrow’s Hawkesbury Gold
Cup will be run at Rosehill this year over 1500
metres. From four starts over that course and
distance, Mask Of Time has registered two
close seconds, a third and a fourth - all on rain-
softened ground. Sydney stable representative
for the yard, Annabel Neasham, said: “He
performs on good and wet tracks but he’s
probably more advantaged when the tracks
are wet. I couldn’t be happier with how he is
though and Tim Clark should suit his running
style.”

Qld on cards for FormenteraCo-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian
Bott could look to Queensland for their
lightly-raced juvenile Formentera (I Am
Invincible), should the colt run well in the
Clarendon Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. Racing
Queensland have amended their winter
carnival program due to the global pandemic,
with the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) one of
two Group 1 races on June 6 at Eagle Farm,
along with the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1,
1400m). Notable is that the distance of the J J
Atkins has been reduced from 1600 metres to
1400 metres this season. “I think he’s a really
nice colt for us,” Bott said of Formentera.
“He should be suited by stepping up to 1400
metres and he’s in great shape. He looks to
have trained on really well from his last-
start win and that was a really tough effort,
probably in unsuitable conditions because
1200 metres is short of his best and a heavy
track is probably not ideal for him.”
Lindsay Park double-handed in Anzac Day StakesThe Lindsay Park team will be looking for its first
win in the Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) since
2009 when they won with former stable stalwart
Extra Zero (Danzero). The stable will have dual
representation in this year’s race through Itzhot
(Snitzel) and Mauser (All Too Hard). Itzhot comes
into the race having won his previous start at
Sandown while Mauser, a $22,500 yearling, makes
his debut in the race. Co-trainer Tom Dabernig
said the stable was throwing Mauser into the deep
end: “I think he might need a run or two and will
eventually get out over a bit more ground so that’s
why we’re going 1400 metres first time out with
him,” Dabernig said. The co-trainer said Itzhot
has trained on well since his last start: “He had
been working up to a win and it was pleasing to
see him finally do it last time and we know he can
run the trip.”
Sacramento set for St LegerCo-trainer Adrian Bott is confident that
Sacramento (Pierro) has the right profile to keep
the stable’s domination of the VRC St Leger
(Listed, 2800m) going. Gai Waterhouse has won
the race four times in the last seven years, the
last two in partnership with Bott. “Sacramento
certainly fits that profile again. I think he’s a really
nice prospect for this race,” Bott said. “He’s just
taken a bit of time like most of these staying types
do, but he’s really strengthened and developed
into himself this campaign and I think that’s been
shown in his racing.” Sacramento goes into the St
Leger having finished fifth in the Australian Derby
(Gr 1, 2400m) at his previous start at Randwick
earlier this month.

Prebble eyessecond St Leger It is 24 years since Brett Prebble won his first
VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) and tomorrow
the jockey hopes to win the race again. The
Melbourne Cup-winning rider has excelled
at riding in distance races and is looking
forward to partnering Chains Of Honour
(Redoute’s Choice). “I enjoy it,” Prebble told
Racing.com of riding in staying races. “It’s a
lot different. It’s more about tactics. Things
can change a lot along the way, so you’ve got
to keep your wits about you. You’ve got more
time to appreciate the race, unless you’re on
a difficult one that’s giving you a horror ride,
then it can be a very long race.” Chains Of
Honour comes into the race off the back of
unplaced efforts in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr
1, 2000m) and the Australian Derby (Gr 1,
2400m).
Jack Regan to take on Vow And DeclareCo-trainer Trent Busuttin admits he did not
expect Jack Regan (Rock Of Gibraltar) to
be taking on Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
winner Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War)
when targeting tomorrow’s William Newton
VC Handicap (2600m). Vow And Declare will
carry 61 kilograms in the handicap, which has
changed the complexion of the race. “It’s to
their advantage so why not run, but you don’t
expect to be running into a Melbourne Cup
winner in these types of races at this time of
year,” Busuttin said. “He’s got two or three less
kilos than he should and we should be on the
minimum with 54 kilograms. He’s thrown in at
the weights, but 61 kilograms over 2600 metres
- it’s still a bit of weight.” To add to Busuttin’s
woes, regular rider, apprentice Thomas
Stockdale, is suspended, where Jack Regan
would have carried 53 kilograms. Instead, Mark
Zahra will take the ride at 56 kilograms.
Gambler can stay but does he have the class?Trainer John McArdle is realistic in his hopes
for his three-year-old Themoonlitegambler
(Good Journey) in tomorrow’s Chairman’s
Stakes (Gr 3, 2035m) at Morphettville. Although
he is hopeful of another good run en route to
next month’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1,
2500m), he isn’t confident about his gelding
beating odds-on favourite Dalasan (Dalakhani)
or Group 1 winner Warning (Declaration Of
War). “He seems to have come on and improved
fitness-wise since the Port Adelaide Guineas,”
McArdle told Racing.com. “He’s a very, very
clean-winded horse so we don’t have to do a
huge amount with him. I don’t reckon he can
beat Dalasan (over 2000 metres) but he’ll be
around the mix and should improve into the
Derby when he gets to a mile-and-a-half.”
Talented Brisbane fillies to clashTomorrow’s QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap
(1000m) sees two of the most exciting fillies
in Queensland, Gotta Kiss (Not A Single
Doubt) and Isotope (Deep Field), go head-to-
head as they gear up for the winter juvenile
features. Gotta Kiss started well-fancied in
the market for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic
(RL, 1200m) at her last start, having won
two of her first three starts, and while she
finished down the track, the race has already
produced three of the leading juveniles in
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), King’s Legacy
(Redoute’s Choice) and Away Game (Snitzel).
Isotope has raced once for a 10-length victory
at Doomben. "I was originally thinking of
the Magic Millions with her but she wasn't
ready. So we turned her out with the winter in
mind," Isotope’s trainer Tony Gollan said. "It
should pay off in the coming weeks and she is
a winter horse for sure.”
Etana to open winter prepStakes-winning mare Etana (Shamus Award)
has arrived in Queensland and will begin her
campaign at the Sunshine Coast tomorrow.
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
Etana - who has won twice in the state
previously, taking last year’s Doomben Roses
(Gr 2, 2000m) and the Magic Millions Quality
(1800m) in January - steps out in tomorrow’s
Open Handicap (1400m), where she tackles
a strong group of locals. "She appears to have
travelled well and she has won twice at 1400
metres. Etana will probably have three runs in
Queensland," Annabel Neasham, who runs the
Sydney satellite stable for Maher and Eustace,
said. "After Saturday she will go to the Wayne
Wilson Mile and then probably the Chairman's
Handicap. They seem to be the right type of
races for her."
Miller hoping for wet trackTrainer Trevor Miller will be thrilled if rain
arrives ahead of tomorrow’s Sunshine Coast
meeting, where he saddles up the unbeaten
Zingalong (Falvelon) in the QTIS Two-Year-Old
Handicap (1000m). Zingalong’s only start came
two and a half weeks ago when he won on a
Heavy 10 at the Sunshine Coast; the track was
so heavy that the meeting was abandoned after
the race. "He trialled really well on a heavy track
and I had no doubt he would handle it," Miller
said. "A bit of rain on Saturday wouldn't do him
any harm.”
Sizzlepel on the back-upPromising two-year-old Sizzlepel (Sizzling)
will back up at the Gold Coast today after
recording a pillar-to-post win over the Ipswich
1350 metres last Sunday. The Bryan and Daniel
Guy-trained filly steps up to 1400m but tackles
a similar field to the one she beat at Ipswich.
"We have a bit of a wrap on her and she is like
a lot of her sire Sizzling's horses who get better
with time," Bryan Guy said yesterday. "She has
been looking for more ground and 1400 metres
on her home track looks ideal. Sizzlepel can run
Friday and then go for a break. We think she will
be more than handy later."
Buyers circling KinaneDespite intense interest from Hong Kong
buyers, with offers north of $2 million being
reported, the South Australian Derby (Gr 1,
2500m) is still on the agenda for Frank Packer
Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Kinane (Reliable
Man). Owner Mick Kent, taking a sabbatical
from the training ranks, said that Kinane was
still likely to head to Morphettville, where
he could tackle the likes of Russian Camelot
(Camelot), Warning (Declaration Of War) and
Dalasan (Dalakhani). “There has been a fair
bit of interest in the horse, there’s no denying
that, but the thought is that the horse is going
to be running in the Derby,” Kent said. “Things
might change but my understanding is that’s
the plan.”

Lunakorn spring boundThe Anthony Freedman yard believes that
Lunakorn (Puissance de Lune) could step
up come the spring after she made it three
from three this preparation at Bendigo on
Wednesday. “We have always had a good
opinion of her but she has had a few issues”
said Freedman’s assistant trainer Sam
Freedman. “This is the first preparation where
we haven’t had to send her to the breakers or
to a pre-trainer. Early on, we thought she would
get over ground as her pedigree suggested but
the way she is going this campaign, we might be
keeping her to the shorter trips. We won’t take
her too much further this time as we believe
she is capable of winning a nice race during the
spring. She is likely to have only one more start
before a break and whether it’s here in Victoria
or we take her across the border to Adelaide will
be decided over the coming days.”
Surprise Baby on path to CupAfter producing one of the runs of the race
in last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m),
trainer Paul Preusker is hoping to have Surprise
Baby (Shocking) peaking for the first Tuesday in
November this year. Surprise Baby flew home
for fifth, stamping himself as one of Australia’s
leading stayers, and with the Cup this year
potentially an all-Australasian affair, he looms
as a major contender. “You generally try and
keep your horses in the weakest company but
it is a great race and you want it as tough as you
can get it,” Presuker said. “It’s the one you want
to win.” Preusker says that Surprise Baby will
likely have a similar preparation to last year,
where he had two starts leading into the Cup.
“He has come up beautifully. He had a good
solid prep with a few weeks out and then back
in now. The horse is in super order, he said.
“It’s a funny thing, you get the Cup over and
done with and it’s a sigh of relief. But after a few
weeks all the pressure starts again.”
Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock buys European stayerWith racing locked down in Europe, syndicators
Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock have
purchased their latest Melbourne Cup aspirant
out of Great Britain. Darren and Liz Dance’s
Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, who
have twice placed in the Melbourne Cup with
runner-up Heartbreak City (Lando) in 2016
and third-placed Jakkalberry (Storming Home)
in 2012, have bought promising four-year-old
Mind The Crack (Jukebox Jury). A two-time
winner over 1m 3f at Lingfield and 1m 4f at
Haydock, he was also placed over 1m 6f at
Haydock behind English St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f)
runner-up Sir Ron Priestley (Australia). Should
he make it to the race that stops the nation,
Mind The Crack would join a rare group as a
Melbourne Cup runner sired by a Melbourne
Cup runner - Jukebox Jury (Montjeu) finished
20th in 2011. He will join the Ciaron Maher and
David Eustace yard and will arrive in June.
Busuttin: Local Cup no concernThe Melbourne Cup will still attract the same
amount of attention, whether international
contenders make the race or not. That’s according
to trainer Trent Busuttin, who hopes that he may
be able qualify the likes of Jack Regan (Rock Of
Gibraltar) and Inverloch (Fastnet Rock) for the
race in the absence of European raiders. "I don't
think it will be a bad thing for Australian owners
and trainers to have a Melbourne Cup without
the internationals coming over," Busuttin told
Racing.com. "It would get it back to its grassroots
a bit. That's obviously from a selfish view but
people were watching the Melbourne Cup long
before the Europeans started coming over and
that won't change no matter what happens this
year." Jack Regan runs in tomorrow’s William
Newton VC Handicap (2600m) as he prepares for
next month’s Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed,
2800m).
Raffles Farm to reduce numbersBhima Thoroughbreds will offer up 19 mares
at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale next
month, including 12 on behalf of New Zealand-
based Raffles Farm, who are undertaking a
major bloodstock reduction. Raffles Farm,
owned by Malaysian businessman Dato Yap
Kim San and managed by Bruce Sherwin, will
offer six black-type mares, including Argentine
Group 1 winner Ride Of Valkyries (Orpen) and
dual Group 3 winner Ready To Lift (More Than
Ready). “Raffles Farm have been a great client
for a long time now – the relationship goes back
to when we foaled and raised Group 1 winner
First Seal, who they bred and later sold at Karaka
as a yearling,” said Bhima Thoroughbreds’ Mike
Fleming. “They have acquired a lot of quality
bloodstock over the years and their history of
breeding, rearing and racing has armed them
with a very good reputation in the sales ring
and on the racetrack.”
Rodd set to ridein MelbourneSingapore-based jockey Michael Rodd is
planning to return to Melbourne to ride while
racing in the Lion City remains shut down.
Rodd, who has been based in Singapore since
2015, is working with the Singapore Turf Club
for a short-term release. Rodd will have to do
two weeks of mandatory quarantine upon
arriving in Melbourne before being allowed to
join the riding ranks. Racing in Singapore has
been shut down until at least June 1, part of a
nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19.
Kissick clearedfor race returnAfter three and a half years on the sidelines,
rider John Kissick has been cleared for a return
to the saddle. Kissick was injured in a steer-
riding accident in October, 2016, suffering a
fractured spine and requiring two screws and a
rod to be inserted. Kissick, long viewed as one
of the most talented riders to come out of the
Riverina, has been working with Albury trainer
Mitch Beer and is set to make his comeback at
next week’s two-day Wagga Gold Cup meeting.
Allen suspended at PakenhamJockey Ben Allen was suspended for nine
meetings at Pakenham last night, having been
charged with careless riding. Allen guided the
Phillip Stokes-trained Ziavera (Uncle Mo) to
a big victory at her second start, with the filly
winning by three and three-quarter lengths.
However, Allen caused interference early in
the race which earned him the nine-meeting
suspension. The rider starts a six-meeting
whip-breach suspension tomorrow night and
will serve last night’s penalty immediately after
that ban finishes.

Queensland implements Greater Western regionA sixth region has been implemented as part
of Queensland’s coronavirus restrictions. The
Greater Western region will take in most of
inland Queensland taking in centres like Roma,
Charleville, Barcaldine, Longreach, Cloncurry
and Mount Isa. “The Queensland racing industry
has moved swiftly and efficiently to implement a
range of biosecurity measures including patron-
free meetings and designated racing regions,”
Racing Queensland chief Brendan Parnell said.
“By establishing Greater Western, we’re able
to further isolate participant movement across
the state. This aligns with the Queensland
Government’s latest protocols relating to the
region and to ensure outback communities are
being quarantined from the coast. It will also allow
RQ to programme a non-TAB calendar which will
provide additional economic and animal welfare
benefits.” The reconfigured regions come into
effect tomorrow night.
Holland injured inmounting yard incidentVeteran trainer Evan Holland is undergoing
surgery on a broken left humerus after an
accident at yesterday’s Newcastle race meeting.
Racing NSW said Holland was attempting to
put a lead on Elotrolado (Time Thief) in the
mounting area following the first race yesterday,
and was seen on the ground shortly after. He
was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he
was undergoing surgery on his arm last night.
Now in his 80s, Holland worked alongside his
late trainer brother Tiger at Randwick for many
years and prepares a small team at Wyong on
the NSW Central Coast.
Draper fined $3,500Orange trainer Brad Draper has been fined
$3,500 for possession of prohibited substances
and equipment at a Hawkesbury race meeting
in November, as well as administration of the
prohibited substance meloxicam to his galloper
Seawatch (Harbour Watch) after he raced at Forbes
in October and Dubbo in November. Seawatch
was scratched from an intended engagement at
Hawkesbury in November by order of stewards
after Draper was found with used oral syringes
containing phenylbutazone and meloxicam. He
was charged with administering medication on
race day, but he was found not guilty as stewards
could not be satisfied he had breached the rules.
However, he pled guilty to seven other charges
and received $500 fines for each charge, totalling
$3,500.
Picnic jockey banned after altercationA picnic rider has been suspended from
trackwork for six weeks and a trainer has
been fined after an altercation at Bendigo
trackwork in January. Rob Kirkpatrick, who
last rode at Yea in February, was suspended
from riding trackwork until June 7 for punching
Bendigo trainer Keith Hall on January 15. Hall
himself was fined $750 for kicking the jockey
in the chest after a verbal confrontation. The
stewards’ report said: "In assessing the penalty,
stewards took into account Kirkpatrick's
guilty plea, record and the fact that Hall had
sustained injuries which required hospital
treatment. Stewards (also) took into account
Hall's previously unblemished record over a
long period in the industry. Both were advised
of their rights of appeal.”
Viewer record set for Sky RacingSky Racing has achieved new viewing records
amidst the Covid-19 crisis, with the continuation
of racing amongst a slew of sporting cancellations
drawing more eyes to the channel. Sky Racing’s
average audience rose by 38 per cent year on year,
reaching almost 300,000 viewers on each of the
two days of The Championships. Notably, Sky
Raceday - Sky Racing 1’s wall-to-wall coverage
- has been the most popular program on the
entire Foxtel platform for the past four Saturdays.
In addition, digital vision through the TAB app
is up by an average of 36 per cent, peaking at 62
per cent and 81 per cent on the two days of The
Championships, while more than 40,000 viewers
also used the Sky Racing Active app during the
Sydney autumn. “We are pleased more viewers
are watching Sky Racing’s unrivalled racing
coverage in the ways that suit them best - whether
that is digitally via TAB or Sky Racing Active, or
through Foxtel,” Tabcorp’s executive general
manager of media and international Darren
Pearce said yesterday. “These are unprecedented
times and we are proud of Sky Racing’s role in
continuing to keep racing fans informed with
the best racing vision, talent and tips, as well as
reaching new audiences to help racing grow.”
NEW ZEALAND
Ritchie calls for course extensionRuakaka and Taupo have been a staple of
winter and spring racing for many years and
Cambridge trainer Shaune Ritchie is hoping racing
administrators reconsider adding them to this
year’s proposed racing calendar. On Tuesday, New
Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) released
a proposed racing calendar for the months July-
November, which leaves out the two tracks in favour
of more localised venues. “I think there needs to be
some revision from August through to November
to ensure that we have places like Taupo, Ruakaka,
and Hastings even, racing as much as possible so
that we can get the races into these horses,” Ritchie
said. “If we are going to get our three-year-olds
going for Guineas races, and a lot of those two-
year-olds missed trials and races towards the end
of the season with the shutdown, we are going to
have to get them going earlier. In order to do that
we won’t want to be running on heavy tracks. I am
not so sure Matamata and Counties provide dry
tracks at that time of year.”
Equine road transport to resumeThe downgrade in Covid-19 alert level from
level four to level three next week will allow
horse transport by road to resume. The level
four lockdown ends at 11:59pm on Monday
night and bookings are being taken from
Tuesday. Leading horse transport business
Majestic Horse Floats believes that demand
will be high. “Due to an increased number of
bookings there are a large number of horses
needing transport,” Majestic Horse Floats said
in a statement. “Please expect a longer wait
time before we can get your horse on a truck.
We will have strict protocols in place to keep
both clients and our staff safe and we will
endeavour to keep to the two-metre separation
rule. We really appreciate your patience and
understanding while we try to get everyone’s
horses moved as quickly and safely as possible.”

Weanling sale goes onlineNew Zealand Bloodstock announced last
night that their Karaka May Sale would be
replaced by a weanling-only sale in June, to be
conducted online through Gavelhouse Plus.
The National Weanling Sale will be open to all
vendors and all weanlings will be eligible for the
lucrative Karaka Million Series. Curraghmore
Stud’s Gordon Cunningham said: “With the
practical restrictions we’re currently facing as
an industry, I’m pleased that NZB have made
the decision to offer a weanling sale via their
new online platform Gavelhouse Plus. I can
confirm that Curraghmore will be entering our
usual quality draft and I strongly encourage all
vendors to support this important and timely
Sale with good stock and make it a success.”
Little Avondale supports Gavelhouse auctionThe postponement of NZB’s National Weanling
and Broodmare Sale, coupled with good results
in a virtual setting at the Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale, has opened the door
for Little Avondale Stud to offer a selection of
broodmares and unraced stock through the
Gavelhouse online platform. Gavelhouse’s
latest auction closes Monday evening and
features 13 lots from the Masterton farm. “We
sold three yearlings at Sydney Inglis Easter and
we usually have a decent draft at the traditional
May sale so we’re more than happy to run with
the online sale,” Little Avondale proprietor Sam
Williams said. Among their lots are two three-
year-old fillies out of two of the farm’s prized
homebred mares, Group 1 placegetters Can’t
Keeper Down (Keeper) and Laebeel (Zabeel), as
well as the well-bred Mar Tene (Cape Blanco),
who is carrying an Ocean Park (Thorn Park) foal
that is bred on a similar cross to All Aged Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) winner Tofane (Ocean Park).

Purton and his ‘Beauty’ aim for historyBeauty Generation (Road To Rock) and his
rider Zac Purton have formed a tremendous
partnership, garnering 15 wins together -
seven at Group 1 level - from 24 starts. The
partnership will continue at Sha Tin on Sunday
when Beauty Generation aims for his third win
in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). “They’ve
become an inseparable pair, the two of them
have married up very well,” Beauty Generation’s
trainer John Moore said. “Zac knows him like
part of his family now, he knows when he’s on
song and he knows when he’s not. He knows
his mood and of course he knows how to get
the best out of him in a race, where to be, where
not be, when to ask him for that race-winning
effort.” Purton added: “Three Champions Miles,
it’s never been done before. I don’t know what
the Group 1 record is for horses in Hong Kong
but he might be looking at setting a new record
there.”
Moore’s smiling asAethero gets fiveJohn Moore believes Aethero (Sebring) is
“definitely the one they’ve all got to beat” after
the precocious sprinter yesterday drew gate
five of 11 for the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr
1, 1200m). The exciting three-year-old will
on Sunday attempt to become the first of his
age to win the contest since Fairy King Prawn
(Danehill) in 1999. “I expect him to ping and
get to the front. We might see the best of him,”
Moore said. “This is a good gate for him, I think.
I preferred the middle for him because on the
inside, if you break a fraction slowly, you can get
knocked down.” Fresh in the memory is the fact
that Aethero proved to be his own worst enemy
for the second time this season when in the
Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier this month he
missed the break – also from gate five – and found
himself behind runners, eager to pass, climbing
on heels, wasting reserves. He finished last of
eight. “He did something similar first-up this
season so when he’s coming back fresh, I think
maybe it does take him a little bit sometimes
to switch back on – hopefully after his trial last
week he’ll switch on,” rider Zac Purton said.
Japan behind closed doors until JuneThe Tokyo Yushun (Gr 1, 2400m), the Japanese
Derby, will be run behind closed doors for the
first time since World War II, the Japan Racing
Association announced yesterday. The Tokyo
Yushun is expected to feature another battle
between top three-year-olds Contrail (Deep
Impact) and Salios (Heart’s Cry). As well as the
Tokyo Yushun, all of Japan’s Group 1 features in
May - the Tenno Sho (Spring) (Gr 1, 3200m), the
NHK Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), the Victoria Mile (Gr
1, 1600m) and the Japanese Oaks, the Yushun
Himba (Gr 1, 2400m) - will be run without
crowds, with the situation to be reassessed in
late May. The Tokyo Yushun, which dates back
to 1932, was run in secret in 1944 by directive of
the Tojo war cabinet.

Craven and Ascot breeze-up dates alteredThe Tattersalls group have issued revised dates
for the Craven and Ascot Breeze Up Sale, with
a contingency plan for an amended format
for the fixture if required due to the Covid-19
crisis. The Goresbridge Breeze Up has also been
given a new date on the calendar. The Craven
and Ascot Breeze Up sales will take place
in Newmarket on June 23. The Goresbridge
Breeze Up Sale will be moved to July 24. Should
the British government guidelines disallow the
breeze up in the conventional format prior to
the sale in Newmarket, breezes could take place
well in advance of June 23. The contingency
breeze would take place on the week beginning
June 8. The breeze would take place for British-
based horses at Newmarket’s ‘Watered Gallop’,
adjacent to the Rowley Mile. A location has yet
to be established for Irish-based horses.
Addeybb arrives back homeStar of the Sydney autumn Addeybb (Pivotal)
has arrived back at Newmarket after his
successful campaign down under. The
William Haggas-trained Addeybb won the
Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Queen
Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in the space of
three weeks, beating runaway Tancred Stakes
(Gr 1, 2400m) winner Verry Elleegant (Zed)
into second both times. Equine flights were
temporarily halted due to the coronavirus
pandemic, but Addeybb was able to return
to the UK when they resumed this week. His
travelling companion Young Rascal (Intello),
himself a winner of the N E Manion Cup (G3,
2400m), has remained in Australia, joining
trainer Archie Alexander.

Zac Purton made sure he gained
some benefit from Joao Moreira’s
absence at Happy Valley on
Wednesday night with a double
that took him to within one of his great rival at
the top of the Hong Kong jockeys’ premiership.
Moreira bagged a three-timer last weekend
but a one-meeting suspension forced him out
of the evening’s action.
The running tally in the head-to-head
stands at 104-103 going into a Group 1
showdown at Sha Tin on Sunday when Purton
will ride Beauty Generation (Road To Rock)
against Moreira’s Waikuku (Harbour Watch)
in the FWD Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m),
Exultant (Teofilo) against the Brazilian’s Time
Warp (Archipenko) in the FWD QEII Cup (Gr 1,
2000m) and Aethero (Sebring) in opposition to
Hot King Prawn (Denman) in the Chairman’s
Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m).
Purton returned drenched and mud-
spattered after the Caspar Fownes-trained
Tangmere (Frankel) gave him his second win
in section two of the Class 4 Marigold Handicap
(1650m), the going having changed to good to
yielding just prior thanks to incessant rain.
“The fast pace and wet track really helped
this horse, it was a good effort,” he said of the
Frankel five-year-old.
The three-time champion jockey kicked off
his double in race two, section two of the Class
4 Jonquil Handicap (1200m), on the Richard
Gibson-trained Hero Time (Mint Lane).
“He did a good job. He had a tough run and
it was a solid effort,” Purton said.
Moore’s Amigo makes it twoPurton was out of luck aboard 1.8 favourite
Dancing Fighter (Zoustar) in the Class 3 Crocus
Handicap (1200m). The Caspar Fownes-trained
top-weight missed the break for the second
time in as many starts and could only run on for
third behind the Derek Leung-ridden Beauty
Amigo (Kodiac).
A two-time Listed winner in Ireland, the
five-year-old relished the underfoot conditions
to seal a double for trainer John Moore.
“He’s been a work in progress and when
Derek got off him he said he just loved the
ground – there was plenty of cushion in the
track – and the fast pace enabled him to settle
in behind and hit the line well,” Moore said.
Vagner Borges flew the gate and was never
headed on Moore’s We The South (Your Song) in
the Class 4 Iris Handicap (1000m). That gave the
Brazilian his fourth Hong Kong win and first for the
stable – the three-year-old gelding, a barrier trial
‘winner’ at the Gold Coast pre-import, returned at
28/1 for his first win at the fourth attempt.
“He’s been showing this great initial speed
and he only needed two things: to settle in the pre-
race parade and then to come back underneath
the rider and find a rhythm. Borges was able to get
him in that rhythm and he hit the line.
“He said to me he felt that if he could get
him to the fence and cuddle him, he’d be able
to kick and that’s what he did.”
Teetan strikes with Lightning
Karis Teetan teamed with Electric Lightning
(Not A Single Doubt) for a win in section one of
the Class 4 Marigold Handicap (1650m), two
years after their last successful pairing. The
Mauritian’s success on the six-year-old was his
second this term for the David Ferraris stable.
“I felt like last time he was hitting the line pretty
strongly for Derek (Leung), he came from a long way
off and I just wanted to have him in a better position
tonight and keep him rolling – that’s how I won on
him before and it’s how Dougie (Whyte) won on
him, just getting him going,” Teetan said.
Electric Lightning boxed to the lead and had
to dig deep to repel the late charge of the top-
weight King’s Man (Iffraaj) under Neil Callan.
“All credit to David Ferraris, the horse was
in good shape and I’m appreciative that I got to
pick up the ride,” Teetan added.
Vincent Ho had to work hard for his 50th
win of the campaign – the first half-century of
his career. The rider drove the Tony Cruz-trained
Happy Sebring (Sebring) from off the pace to
secure a battling length win over Vincy (Elzaam)
in the Class 3 Heather Handicap (2200m).
Chad Schofield nailed another victory
to maintain his run of at least one win at the
last nine race meetings. Destine Jewellery (I
Am Invincible) became his 12th score in that
stretch – the John Size-trained four-year-old
opened his career account at the ninth try.
Ricky Yiu clocked up another win to aid his
bid for a first trainer’s championship as Allied
Agility (Star Witness) took the last race, the
Class 3 Cornflower Handicap (1000m), to take
him five clear at the top of the table.
Antoine Hamelin drove the four-year-old wide
down the stands’ side rail to edge the Purton-ridden
Larson (Better Than Ready) by a short-head. The
Frenchman has bagged at least one win at each of
his first four Hong Kong race meetings.
Jack Wong made use of the inside gate
to lead from start to finish aboard Great
Son (Danerich) in the opening Class 5 Tulip
Handicap (1200m). The Paul O’Sullivan-trained
galloper did just enough to hold the challenge
of Show Mission (Showcasing) by a short-head.
Wong took a spill and went to hospital for
an examination after his mount Galaxy Emperor
(Verrazano) looked to have clipped heels in race
six. He was diagnosed yesterday with a fracture to
his left foot and also a rib fracture.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

For all of Chris Waller’s domination of
Sydney racing over the last decade,
one “weakness” - or potentially
a strength, given the longevity of
many of his horses - is his record in Sydney’s
juvenile features.
Waller has only had five runners in the
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), with
Hungry Heart (Frankel) giving the trainer his
best result this year when she finished fifth to
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt).
The ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) and the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) are also yet to be won by Sydney’s eight-
time champion trainer, with just one solitary
placing in each race: Love And Kisses (Encosta
De Lago) finished third to Sebring (More Than
Ready) in the 2008 Sires, while Fast And Sexy
(Fastnet Rock) filled the same spot behind
Helmet (Exceed And Excel) in the Champagne
Stakes in 2011.
For maiden watchers, though, now is the
time to be keeping a watchful eye on any Waller-
trained two-year-olds that head to the races.
The period between late April and the end
of the season is when Waller generally steps
out his most promising horses. The likes of
Winx (Street Cry), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s
Choice), Funstar (Adelaide), Press Statement
(Hinchinbrook), Preferment (Zabeel) and
Zoustar (Northern Meteor) all debuted late in
their two-year-old season; others, like Zousain
(Zoustar), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and
Pressday (Domesday) avoided the Sydney
features and were targeted towards stakes
success in the winter.
Time will tell if Sauvestre (Hinchinbrook)
- presumably named after French architect
Stephen Sauvestre, one of the designers
responsible for the Eiffel Tower - is able to
join that group. On the strength of his maiden
win at Canterbury on Wednesday, though, he
appears a colt bound for bigger and better
races.
Given a pearler of a ride by Brenton Avdulla,
Sauvestre enjoyed a box-seat run from gate one,
tracking the free-wheeling Inveigle (Medaglia
d’Oro) throughout. Upon straightening,
Inveigle gave a strong kick and looked destined

for victory, with Sauvestre pulling out of his
slipstream and giving chase resolutely.
Inveigle kept finding, drawing well clear
of the rest of the field, but Sauvestre - despite
racing greenly - went with him. The Aquis
Farm debutant made ground with every
stride, stretching out magnificently. Showing
a tremendous will to win, Sauvestre grabbed
Inveigle right on the line to win by a nose, with
six lengths back to Switch Play (Shamexpress)
in third.
It was visually a performance that appeared
very impressive and Waller’s representative
Charlie Duckworth confirmed that the
shortened J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) may be on
the colt’s agenda.
"It was a fantastic win today,” Duckworth said.
“He has always promised plenty to us but has
taken a bit of time to come to hand. As you know,
at this time of year it is very important for these
two-year-old colts to step up and it is great to see
that there is now a JJ Atkins to go ahead.
“It is obviously a race that can be targeted
with a colt like this. It was great to get the win
out of the way on the first time of asking. It will
be interesting to see where he goes."
By the late Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock),
Sauvestre is the fourth living foal out of the
unraced Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Dezign,
herself a blueblood. She has also produced
stakes-placed The Chairman (High Chaparral),
city winner Excellent Design (Exceed And
Excel) and Nimalee (So You Think), a winner of
four of her six starts.
Dezign’s dam Elegant Fashion (Danewin)
was a top filly in Australia, winning three
Group 2 races and finishing second in the AJC
Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). However, it was
in Hong Kong where she really made her mark,
becoming the only filly to win the Hong Kong
Derby (Listed, 2000m) in the modern era, while
she was placed in three international Group 1
races and four local Group 1 races in her time
in the city.
Elegant Fashion, who died in 2018, produced
the Group 1-placed Star Fashion (Street Cry)
among five foals to race. The family traces back
to influential broodmare Highclere (Queen’s
Hussar), who is Sauvestre’s fourth dam.
Bred by Cressfield, who bought Dezign
privately after she was withdrawn from the 2008
Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sauvestre
was offered at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale. He was purchased for
$500,000 by Aquis Farm.
