  • Project objectives:

    1. Standardization of a method for biometric evaluation of local bee (A.m. carpatica) with references for other European honeybee races (2018).

    2. Optimization and standardization of rearing queens and drones methods, with applicability in breeding apiaries (2015-2016).

    3. Optimization of technology for queen instrumental insemination (2017).

  • Objective no. 1: Standardization of a method for biometric evaluation of local bee (A.m. carpatica) with references for other European honeybee races (2018).

    • The use of DrawWing method developed by Adam Tofilsky (Polish method)

    • The biometric analyses by this system is based on the following stages:

    • Collection of forewing in samples of minimum 20 bees/apiary, in Eppendorf tubes;

    • Scanning the collected wings by the specific device, storing and codding them for a better identification;

    • Automatic measurements by DrawWingPro.exe, according to the references (photo no. 1)

    • Manual correction of the errors;

    • Classification of analysed samples by IdentiFly program – in the phylogenetic lineages and races of A. mellifera.

    Photo. no. 1. The system of points references used to make

    automatic measurements for geometric analysis in honeybees by

    DrawWing program.

  • • The references samples collected from Romania in the period 1982-1997:

    • 102 samples in 28 locations (counties) totalling 3491 processed wings out of 3533 scanned.

    Photo. no. 2. Romania map where the references (older) samples location is marked (1982-1997 samples).

    Photo. no. 3. Romania map where the analysed (newer) samples location is marked (2016 samples).

    • The analysed samples collected in 2016:

    • 64 samples in 32 locations (counties) totalling 1800 processed wings out of 1827 scanned.

    Objective no 1: Standardization of a method for biometric evaluation of local bee (A.m. carpatica) with references for other European honeybee races (2018).

  • • The graphic representation of the distribution of honeybee samples analysed by IdentiFly program, in order to classify the reference samples (photo no 4) and the analysed samples (photo no 5) in the frame of geographical races registered in the system.

    • Details with all the wings samples.

    • A large variability of points positioning can be seen, this fact conducting to the idea that this programme can be used only with scientific purpose in order to find out the population average

    Photo. no. 4 Photo. no. 5

    Objective no. 1: Standardization of a method for biometric evaluation of local bee (A.m. carpatica) with references for other European honeybee races (2018).

  • • The graphic representation of the distribution of honeybee samples AVERAGE (the black point in the carnica circle) analysed by IdentiFly program, in order to classify the reference samples (photo no 6) and the analysed samples (photo no 7), in the frame of geographical races registered in the system.

    • This result show that both reference samples and analysed samples averages are different which show that the Romanian bee population is a distinct race, as its average is not overlapping on the other populations averages.

    Objective no. 1: Standardization of a method for biometric evaluation of local bee (A.m. carpatica) with references for other European honeybee races (2018).

  • Conclusions:• The DrawWing/Identifly programs represent a relative rapid method to classify the honeybee populations in

    Romania and other surrounding populations, in the phylogenetic and races distribution.

    • The present study , confirm the researches of classic morphometry and molecular biology which show significant differences of Romanian bee population as compared with other honeybee races spread in the studied area, justifying the taxonomic registering as a distinct population in the geographic races distribution.

    • By this discrimination it is completely justified the use of name A.m. carpatica, firstly published at international level by Foti N. 1965.

    • This study is confirming once more time the necessity for specific measures to conserve and improve the race A.m. carpatica, as a standalone geographic race which is different as compared with A.m. carnica or other races from Central and South-East Europe.

    • Classification of honeybees’ samples by this program is relevant especially at the level of population, by collecting and processing a high number of samples, with scientific purposes in large areas discrimination studies.

    • At present, the application of this method need more studies, and cannot be generalized in the beekeeping practices to discriminate samples of honeybees which come from beekeepers at their request. Generally, all the known methods, including the molecular ones are relevant on large numbers of samples.

    • The researches in this field should continue by international cooperation in order to use comparative approaches on more samples from different regions or countries in Europe.

  • Evolution of crude protein level in bee’s body collected from colonies with different level of development in the winter bees’ formation and early in spring
