AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner

The standards are based on 9 common beliefs that recognize the importance of skills that lead to

productive behavior and provide points of connection with other educators.

•Reading is a window to the world.

•Inquiry provides a framework for learning.

Ethical behavior in the use of information must be taught.

Technology skills are crucial to future employment needs.

Equitable access is a key component for education.

The definition of information literacy has become more complex as resources and technologies have changed.

The continuing expansion of information demands that all individuals acquire the thinking skills that will enable them to learn on their own.

Learning has a social context

School libraries are essential to the development of learning skills.

Process

How do we infuse the AASL Standards, NETS-S, and 21st Century Skills district curriculums?

-Include as an active part of curriculum planning in all content areas-recognize that digital tools and the information process aid learning but the goal should be based on content learning first-make sure there is a clear understanding of what the standards mean and provide examples-professional development should focus on the standards in practice
