Introduction to Armaseam

4 Alumasc Technical Helpline 01744 648400

Alumasc Armaseam is a standing seam metal roofing system based on the tried

and tested principle of zip-up roofing.

It is maintenance free, totally weatherproof with no penetrative fixings, and will

provide outstanding performance for the life of the building.

Armaseam panels are roll formed from continuous strip coil to

any required length, and then mechanically seamed

together onto secret-fixed clips. The result is

an integral roof covering that has no

joints or end laps and makes

rainwater penetration

virtually

impossible.Armaseam panels are available instandard widths of 300mm and 400mm,and can be supplied in different metalgauges to suit load spans and siteconditions. Seam height is standard at65mm.

Armaseam panels are fixed onto specialhalters or fixing clips. These may be ina variety of materials, but each clipincorporates a thermal barrier toreduce cold bridging. The clips aretypically fixed along each line ofpurlins, or may be fixed to the crownsof structural metal decking.

Alumasc Armaseam roofing is held in placeon the roof by special clips or halters thatare secured to the main structure. Thepanels are snap-laid onto the clips and thenseamed together by means of a special handoperated seaming tool.

Once the fixing clip set-out iscomplete, the Armaseam panels arelaid. Each panel engages with itsneighbour, and the top seam ismechanically sealed, or ‘zipped’, usinga special seaming tool to create acompletely weathertight skin.

Aesthetic appeal is assured by thechoice of two panel widths, productionin a variety of materials, and a widerange of finishes and applied colours.Curved roof panels can also be formed.

Based on proven technology, thousandsof square metres of Armaseam roofinghave been installed successfullythroughout the UK and overseas.

Armaseam panels are manufactured ina choice of 300 and 400mm widths, with a standard 65mm seam height.

Alumasc Armaseam roofing is extremelyflexible in application. The rigid profiledesign gives each panel span capability.Consequently, continuous support – afeature of more traditional longstripstyle roofs – is not required.

The Armaseam system does not rely onmastics or sealants to ensure weather-tightness. However, the closed seamdoes permit any moisture trappedwithin the construction to vent throughto the outside atmosphere, effectivelyallowing the system to breathe. Acapillary groove rolled into the lap ofthe panel prevents moisture beingdrawn through the seam.

System ComponentsThe Armaseam panel is complementedby a range of special components andaccessories which are designed tomaximise the performance of the panelsystem and facilitate its installation.

All components and fasteners are non-ferrous to reduce corrosion risk andincrease life expectancy.

For Armaseam in aluminium, zinc andstainless steel, standard fixing clips aresupplied in aluminium. The Armaseampanel in copper is installed using afibreglass clip which eliminates the riskof bi-metallic reaction – brass clips arealso available.

For full details on all systemcomponents, consult the ArmaseamTechnical Manual, or Alumasc TechnicalServices.

Thermal movementThe Armaseam system is designed topermit the thermal movement ofpanels which will occur, especially onlarger roofs. Aluminium panels, forexample, will typically expand by 1mmper metre of roof panel. The colourand finish of the roof may cause thisfigure to vary, with dark coloursattaining higher temperatures. However, the panel movement isaccommodated by the panel slidingover the head of the fixing clip.

The thermal movement is controlled bythe introduction of a ‘fixed point’ inthe system where the Armaseam panelis rivetted or bolted to the fixing clip. This would normally be at the ridge, allowing movement in each direction tothe eaves. In some cases the roofdesign may suggest that the fixed pointbe set elsewhere, for example, wherethere is a penetration through the roof.In this situation, thermal movementmay be allowed to occur in twodirections away from the fixed point –see the diagrams on the right.

CurvesTo allow the architect additional designopportunities, Armaseam panels can becurved. Both convex and concave formscan be created, or a combination ofthe two.

All Armaseam panels have some naturalcurvature which varies according to thegauge of material chosen and the metalitself. For example, in the case ofaluminium:

Gauge Minimum radiusConvex Concave

0.8mm 36 metre 40 metre

0.9mm 40 metre 45 metre

1.2mm 45 metre 50 metre

The natural curving ability of eachpanel can be developed usingmachinery, with variations againaccording to the type of metal andgauge. Contact Alumasc TechnicalServices for details.

All Armaseam panels can be crimpcurved in convex form down to a 1.5mradius.

InsulationArmaseam roofs can be insulated tosatisfy project requirement andDocument L2. The new guidelines laiddown by the BRE are designed toimprove the thermal performance of allbuildings, with a minimum standard U-value laid down. By working closelywith supply partners and specialistconsultants, Alumasc have modelledworkable solutions for the Armaseamroof itself, and perimeter details.

The thermal efficiency of theconstruction can be calculated bycomputer modelling and demonstratedby physical or ‘hot box’ testing.

The adjacent computer image showshow heat is dissipated by an aluminiumfixing clip in its typical position withinthe panel seam.

For further information on U-valuescontact Alumasc Technical Services.

The typical Armaseam roofincorporates mineral wool insulationbetween a metal liner and theArmaseam panel, to produce asandwich construction. Connection ofthe outer panel back to structure is viaa fixing clip and spacer bar assembly,or by extended fixing clips (as shown).

Heat loss through the system can becontrolled by using thermal breaks toeliminate metal to metal contactwithin the roof construction. The levelof insulation will determine the overallU-value of the system.

Vapour controlAlumasc recommend the incorporationof a vapour control membrane withinthe Armaseam roof build-up to restrictthe movement of water vapour frominside the building into theconstruction. This membrane shouldalways be installed on the warm side ofthe insulation layer. Particularattention should be given to detailingat the perimeter and aroundpenetrations to ensure vapour-tightnessis maintained.

AcousticsThe Armaseam roof system can betailored to satisfy acoustic designrequirements.

To improve the sound resistance ofthe roof, rigid mineral insulation slabor board is used to provide additionalmass.

Perforated liner profiles used inconjunction with slab insulationassist in reducing echo orreverberation within the building.

Armaseam in mill finish aluminium is

offered in either plain or stucco

embossed form. Newly produced, the

metal has a very bright appearance.

However, exposure to the atmosphere

quickly encourages an oxide patina to

form which protects the metal from

longer term attack. The fully

developed patina colours to a matt

decoration and little long term

maintenance.

Aluminium is the most abundant metalin the earth’s crust. It has been usedfor decades as a building material andits lightness and strength make it aperfect choice for roofing.

Armaseam is manufactured fromaluminum coil in alloys from the 3000series. These typically contain over 90%aluminium, but also significantpercentages of manganese andmagnesium. The resultant metal isformable, strong and corrosionresistant.

Aluminium can be fully re-cycled, andat a much lower cost than primaryproduction from bauxite. However, world demand for the metal meansthat mill supply can only include some

Paint FinishesPainting aluminium may increase thelife expectancy of the Armaseampanel, but will also ensure continuityof colour across the roof.

Alumasc use recognised internationalsuppliers of pre-painted aluminiumstrip, which is then profiled into therequired Armaseam panel. Forquantities of 500 square metres ormore, Armaseam can be offered in anycolour in PVDF or ARS coatings. Smallerquantities may be available from stockor by special arrangement.

Alternatively, Armaseam panels can beoffered in polyester powder finish. Thismore costly method is used to colour coat Aluminium coil coating paint line

Copper is a natural material that hasbeen used for centuries to clad buildingexteriors. With a virtually indefinitedesign life, it is extremely durable andresistant to corrosion even inaggressive environmental conditions.

Alumasc Armaseam panels in copperare manufactured to the samedimensions as Armaseam aluminium - inwidths of 300 and 400mm. The copperused is C106 alloy, accurately temperedto produce high strength coil strip idealfor rollforming.

Copper requires no decoration, maintenance or cleaning and isdimensionally stable over time.

Zinc

Armaseam in Zinc

13Alumasc Technical Helpline 01744 648400

Zinc is a naturally self-protecting non-ferrous metal. Newly rolled it has abright metallic appearance, which overtimes develops an attractive light greypatina. It does not rust and has anexceptional resistance to corrosion.Zinc also has excellent creepresistance, permitting roofs to be laidover large areas and in conditions ofhigh temperature change. It can bereadily shaped and worked, and solends itself perfectly to themanufacture of Armaseam panels.

Armaseam zinc panels can be suppliedwith a natural bright finish, orchemically treated to replicate anatural patina in two options - lightgrey ‘quartz zinc’, or slate grey‘anthra zinc’.

Zinc is a soft metal that lacks the spancapability of harder metals. Armaseamzinc panels therefore require someform of support during installation, usually in the form of semi-rigidinsulation. Please contact AlumascTechnical Services for advice ondetailing.

Zinc is especially vulnerable to attackfrom condensation which might form onthe underside of the Armaseam panel. The panel should either be laid on aventilating layer, such as polypropylene‘delta’ blanket, or treated with apolyurethane coating to prevent attackfrom occurring.

Stainless steel offers a combination ofaesthetic and practical benefits. It isvisually striking - reflecting light andsurrounding colour - non-corroding, andfire resistant.

Armaseam in stainless steel ismanufactured from 304 and 316 gradesteel, the latter being ideal foraggressive industrial or marineapplications. Whatever the grade, thematerial is available in a variety offinishes. Please contact Alumasc fordetails.

Stainless steel Armaseam panels can beinstalled onto aluminium fixing clips, but for extended life expectancy, special stainless steel clips areavailable.

To ensure complete watertightness, orcreate features, Armaseam panels instainless steel can be welded to thesame detail as aluminium panels.

The excellent span capability ofArmaseam means that panels can beinstalled in an unsupported or ‘singleskin’ form to create an open canopy,or an over-roof, perhaps as part of theAlumasc FTP ‘flat to pitched’ system.Panels may be straight or curved.

Armaseam sample panel with anti-drumming mat

In the case of an over-roof whereventilation may be limited and therisk of condensation is increased, theapplication of an anti-condensationmembrane to the underside of theArmaseam panel may be considered. This is a factory-applied self adhesiveblanket which can absorb largeamounts of condensate and hold ituntil the humidity level changes andthe blanket dries out. The roof voidtherefore remains free of the threat ofdripping condensate and the problemsassociated with it.

With insulated double skin constructions, the timpanic effect of rain drumming onmetal can largely be controlled bycompressing the Armaseam panel ontoan insulation layer. However, with singleskin constructions alternative methodsof control must be used. The applicationof an anti-drumming mat onto theunderside of the Armaseam panel assistsby dulling the noise from rain or hail. The blanket may be of fire-retardentfoam or bitumen-based and is factoryapplied to reduce installation time onsite. Alumasc’s technical team are ableto advise on the material appropriatefor each project.
