Material properties

SSR2 standing seam roof and cladding panels

are comprised of an outer skin profiled from

0.7mm Galvalloy treated steel sheets, grade

S220GD to BS EN 10346:2009. The sheets are

treated with a 200 μ plastisol coating on the

exposed face and a 10 μ polyester coating on

the reverse face.

The lightweight steel is approximately 7 x lighterthan conventional roof tiles, its ease of useallows safe and efficient handling on site andgreatly reduces build times, with an averageSSR2 roof taking approx 10 hours to install.

Coating properties

Extensive research with leading paint companieshas lead to the development of the mostadvanced and unique pre-treatment primer andtopcoat formulation for SSR2 standing seam roofand cladding, designed to ensure maximumdurability during a buildings lifetime.

A robust thick coating provides colour longevityand its flexible adhesion helps to avoid damageduring fabrication and installation. Developedwith a unique metallic coated substrate affordedby Tata Steel Colorcoat® the unique coatingformulation uses special pigments to provideadvanced UV resistance and ensure the productretains its prominent colour, all contributing tothe lasting durability of the product.

Product Guarantees

The unique coating and manufacture of CatnicSSR2 standing seam roof and cladding providesa certified 25-year coastal, or 40-year inlandweatherproof assurance guarantee, togetherwith a 15 year System Guarantee.*

Impact resistance

SSR2 standing seam panels used in both roofand cladding application, will have adequateresistance against hard and soft body impact incombination with the standard wood boardbuild up. Panels have been engineered forimpact resistance in accordance with MOAT 43:UEAtc Directives for impact testing opaquevertical building components, and Part 2.2.1:Impact from large soft bodies and MOAT 43:UEAtc Directives for impact testing opaquevertical building components. Part 2.2.2: Hardbody impacts.

Condensation risk

All roof systems are prone to the risk ofcondensation; this can arise as either interstitialcondensation within the roof construction orsurface condensation at areas of thermal bridges.

Simple measures can be taken to preventcondensation forming between the panels andunderlying substrate, thus minimising the risk ofwater vapour reaching the OSB board:

• Vapour control layer in the roof constructionproviding an adequate seal around the ceiling

• Breather membrane in the roof constructionto allow the air to circulate freely

• Adequate insulation level meeting current U-values

Lightning risk

The Catnic SSR2 standing seam roof is no morelikely to be struck by lightning than any otherroofing material; it is the building shape andposition relative to other buildings that has mostinfluence over a lightning strike. Metal roofs aregenerally safer than other roofs in a lightning storm.

There is no specific requirement for the CatnicSSR2 standing seam roof to have a lightningconductor but as with most buildings any risk oflightning striking the building should be coveredduring the design of the building by a suitablyqualified person. The risk assessment wouldnormally be carried out in line BS EN 62305.

APPLICATIONS ANDINSTALLATION Wind speed and fixing guidance.

SSR2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Applications and Installation

APPLICATIONS ANDINSTALLATION

The installation of SSR2 standing seam roof 514mm and 305mm panelswhen installed at a pitch between 5-450 are dependant* on:

• Location • Storey height

• Wall height • Roof pitch

A structural engineer should complete a wind uplift calculation for yourspecific location before making any final decisions. The table below is forgeneral guidance only:

Guidance notes• When building over 3 storey's or in exposed locations the structural

engineer should complete a wind uplift calculation and provide Catnicwith details so the best fixing solutions can be designed.

• Fixings along the eaves, verge and Mono Ridge backing plates requirefitting at 200mm fixing centres. Same principle applies to walls.

• Fixing into the panel nailing strip must be at 180mm centres.

• SSR2 standing seam profile is fixed to 18mm OSB 3, WBP or Marine Plyboard. (15mm board is used for SIP panels) for other board types ordimensions please contact Catnic Technical service on 02920 337900.

For advice and technical assistance with wind speed or fixingpositions please contact Catnic on 02920 337900 or [email protected]

Load Span TablesAll load span information is based on the boarded structure on standard600mm or 400mm centres, and a structural engineer should be consultedprior to the specification and build to verify these calculations.

MaintenanceFor complete peace of mind SSR2 standing seam roof and cladding hasbeen designed to require little or no maintenance. The long-standingperformance of Tata Steel Colorcoat® pre-finished steel has beenrecognised by the BBA who state that the“coating and metal treatment will protect fora period in excess of 40 years in normal urban, suburban and rural environments”.

Installation trainingFull training for all installers is available free of charge, and recommendedfor anyone using this product for the first time.

Installation guidanceComprehensive installation and specification guides are available fromCatnic on request. For those unfamiliar with metal roofing systems wehave outlined the basic procedures and processes.

Before you begin ensure roof dimensions are checked against thedrawings for accuracy and squareness, together with the ridge, eaves andverge dimensions.

The eaves, verge and ridge backing plates (monopitch) should be in placebefore installing the panels (see Figure 1).

Working from the right-hand end of the roof (as viewed from groundlevel), the first panel is installed with the upturned rib in line with the walledge and its nail strip on the left (see Figure 2).

The next panel is clipped onto the first and secured to the roof at thepredetermined fixing centres, ensuring its rib is parallel with that of thefirst. Subsequent panels are similarly fitted.

To allow for thermal movement, the fixings should be of the correct size, located centrally in the nail strip holes with adequate clearance, andshould not bear too tightly against the plate.

Once the penultimate panel has been installed, the left hand end panelcan be fitted to suit the roof edge, and the verge detail completed.

To minimise thermal expansion in hot, sunny weather, the panels shouldbe protected from direct sunlight until ready for use. Conversely, wheninstalling in cold weather, the panels may be ‘stretched’ against thepreviously installed panel rib before fixing down.

When installing in hot weather, adequate clearance should be providedbetween the folded panel edge. This will allow for contraction due tosubsequent decrease in ambient temperature.

ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCECatnic’s SSR2 standing seam roof and cladding has been designed to meet allthe requirements of external surfaces and walls as set out in ApprovedDocument B1.

SSR2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Acoustic Performance

The built up nature of SSR2 standing seam roofand cladding allows greater flexibility todeliver acoustic solutions for residential andcommercial.

The structure of a building’s walls and roof canbe engineered to modify the level of soundenergy according to the clients acousticrequirements. Where special considerations are

essential, architects / specifiers will address theneeds to control the internal acoustics orreverberation of a building with input from anacoustic engineer.

Acoustic considerationsA number of factors need to be addressed when identifying the acousticrequirements of a building (See figure 1).

1. Airborne transmissionAirborne noise is typically generated from external sources andincreasingly prevalent to residential buildings in close proximity to heavytraffic, industrial units, and schools (See figure 2).

2. Impact transmissionImpact noise from rain and in particular driving rain needs to beconsidered on both roof and cladding elements of the buildings design.

3. Internal noise reverberationAs sound waves are reflected and absorbed sound clarity and overall noiselevels will be directly affected within the building.

4. Flanking transmissionA more complex transmission of sound, where sound vibrationstransmitted from one source are transmitted to other rooms in thebuilding from elements of the building structure (See figure 3).

Modifying building acoustics can be easily addressed in multiple ways:

• Reflected back into the building

• Absorbed within the structure

• Transmitted through the structure

Guidance given is based on genericsystem performances. The actualperformance of a roof / wallconstruction will vary dependant onnumerous factors and build type.Specifiers should refer to their buildingcontrol officer or architect to providedetailed advice and performancefigures for a given specification.

Figure 1. Acoustic performance considerations in buildings

Figure 2. Acoustic performance factors

Figure 3. Direct and flanking transmission between areas

Increasing acoustic performanceIncorporating a high density of insulation withinthe roof or cladding build up, together with adense board layer such as plasterboard orcement particle boards will greatly improveacoustic performance by adding a layer of massto the construction. This can also aid thereduction coupling between the internal andexternal surfaces.

Increasing the thickness and/or density of theboard layer will increase the sound absorptionand reduce the overall level of soundtransmission. The additional mass of the denseboard layer will also reduce the rain impact noisetransmitted through the structure (See figure 5).

A single skin construction has relatively lowmass and the internal surface is directly coupledwith the external surface. Therefore airbornetransmission will incur very little energyabsorption and the majority of sound reductionwill be due to internal reflection.

Consideration also needs to be given toelements within the roof or cladding structuresuch as glazing, which may reduce performance.

SAFE STORAGE ANDHANDLING All products should be used in accordance with their specific instructions toprevent failure. Please ensure all items ordered are delivered beforecommencing installation work.

Storage• Store panels in close proximity to the

building where they are to be installed.

• All products should be stored in a clean anddry environment on a firm even surface, clearof the ground on timber bearers spaced nomore than 900mm apart.

• If indoor storage is not available cover all sheetswith a waterproof covering, which should besupported on a scaffolding frame, leavingsufficient room on all sides for air to circulate.

• Incline the stacks so that any rain water thatpenetrates the covering will drain off.

• If stacked or bundle products do become wet, then separate and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

• Inspect the sheets at regular intervals tocheck for any leaks in the covering.

Handling• Gloves should be worn to avoid injury from

any sharp edges.

• When being moved by hand, the panelsshould be turned and carried on their edgeusing appropriate personal protectiveequipment, and where possible, the panelsshould be lifted manually onto the roof insingle sheets.

• The product should be handled inaccordance with the Manual HandlingOperations Regulations 1992 (as amendedversion). The panels should be lifted from thestack rather than dragged across it.

• Sheets should be handled carefully to avoidany damage, and where possible only liftsingle sheets manually onto the roof.

• If sheets have to be hoisted into positionensure edges are protected and that pressureacross the sheet does not distort it. Use onlyropes and slings for hoisting, never chains.

• Do not drag material over rough surfaces orfixed sheets.

• Bulk sheets should be moved or lifted with afork-lift truck with appropriate length forks.

• Long sheets should be moved using a liftingbeam with suitable slings and spreaders.

• Remove all packaging and wrapping withcare and discard safely and responsibly.

• When working on the roof, soft-soled shoesmust be worn. The soles should be checkedfor any sharp objects that could damage thepanel or cause injury.

Application• Do not use damaged goods.

• Alignment and tolerance of the buildingstructure should be carried out prior toinstallation to ensure it is within thespecification given. If not the panels may not fit.

• Do not drag tools over sheets, and protectfrom swarf.

Cutting• All panel and fabrication cutting must be

completed away from the roof to eliminatethe risk of transferring swarf onto the panel.

• All exposed edges should be burred andprotected with touch-up paint.

• For cut-outs, openings and cuts that are notstraight use a Jigsaw or reciprocating saw.

• We recommend a circular saw producing a‘cold’ cut using a fine tooth metal blade forlong straight cuts.

Delivery• The profiled panels are normally delivered to

site in pre-specified lengths according to thedimensions of the roof on which they are tobe installed and are palleted in packs of 6 or 4depending on length and weight.

• Delivery is normally by lorry and unloadingcarried out by crane or moffet. The site musthave adequate access and a suitable surfacefor this traffic.

• During transport, the panels must be suitablyrestrained to prevent abrasion and theiredges and corners protected againstdamage.

Disposal• When disposing of any Catnic products or
