If the March 14 FLORIDA TODAY Corporate 5K was an actual corporation, you might be checking out their stock. Since the event’s inception in 2011, the Running Zone Foundation race has enjoyed growth of 25 and 31 percent respectively in 2012 and 2013. And, based on participant feedback, the upward trend will continue. “People are already putting teams together for next year’s race and we’ve had four companies offer to host the event,” said Laura Spedick, Running Zone Founda-tion event manager. “That’s what we really want - people getting excited about getting healthy.” Running Zone offers companies and their employees a free 8-week training pro-gram to help them prepare to walk or run the 3.1-mile race and then provides finishers’ shirts and a huge post-race St. Patty’s Day-themed party afterward complete with a live band and green beer. Mike Acosta, Viera Pizza CEO, has witnessed first-hand how employees sharing a common fitness goal can boost both com-pany morale and the bottom line.

For three years now, Acosta has encouraged and supported his employees to participate in the Corporate 5K. And for each of those three years, Acosta has earned the top spot in the CEO category. Although the CEO Champion is one of the few individual awards presented at the team-oriented event, Acosta made sure his team members were with him to accept that award as well as this year’s third place award for corporate teams with less than 99 employees. “We train together as a team,” he said. “They put in just as much if not more work than I do. This event has been a first 5K for some and some have caught the running bug and continued.” “With everything in life, you need a good team behind you – you can’t go it alone.” The camaraderie and healthy lifestyle that have come about since that first Corpo-rate 5K have been a game-changer for the Viera Pizza team. “Running has provided us a whole new

set of clientele,” said Acosta, who opened a second Viera Pizza location last year. “We show that you can be fit, healthy and still enjoy your pizza.” The sport also provided a new vehicle for the company to give back to the community. “We used what we knew about racing and put together the inaugural Eat My Crust 5K last year to raise money for the Viera High school athletic department,” said Acosta. “We wanted to help promote athleticism in our

youth.” Acosta and his crew were able to donate a whopping $9,000 to the school and last month the Brevard Public School System named Viera Pizza the 2013 Business Partner of the Year. “Without that first Corporate 5K, we’d never be where we are now,” he said. “The running community is so welcoming and sup-portive.”

Intersil team members pose for a photo or two before the start of the March 14 Corporate 5K. The 3.1-mile race and St. Patty’s Day-themed post-race party was hosted by the company on their beautiful Palm Bay Campus. Intersil won the first place corporate team award in the ‘100 to 999 employees’ division.

When University of Colorado (Boulder) student David Kilgore realized that Brevard Zoo’s Monkey Madness 3K would take place during a trip to his Palm Bay home, the for-mer Holy Trinity two-time 1,600-meter state champ (4:26, 4:29) and 5,000-meter indoor All-American (14:50.59), signed right up. “I ran this race when I was younger and wanted to do well in it when I got older,” said the integrative physiology major. “I also want-ed to hang out and have some fun with people I know.” Kilgore did well on both counts. First, he blazed through the multi-terrain 1.8-mile course in 9:11 breaking the 2008 course record of 9:15 set by former Holy Trinity teammate and state champion, Kyle Cooke. “I wasn’t so worried about the time,” said Kilgore, who was surprised that he had broken the record. “I had raced a 3K the week

before in 8:23 and knew this race wouldn’t be as fast.” Kilgore also got to help celebrate the 50th birthday of his former Holy Trinity coach, Melbourne’s Doug Butler, who won the 50-54 age group and finished 15th overall in the field of more than 1,000 participants. Because the popular coach turned 50 on the same day as Monkey Madness, Running Zone Foundation had “Happy 50th Birthday, Coach Butler” printed on the back of the race shirts. “I was stunned,” said Butler about his reaction when he saw the birthday sentiment on the shirts. “That was very flattering that Denise (Piercy, Running Zone) and Michelle (Smurl, Brevard Zoo) and all involved would do that. It doesn’t happen very often but I was speechless.”

Palm Bay’s David Kilgore is all smiles as he takes the overall top spot in the Brevard Zoo’s Monkey Madness 3K on March 2. Kilgore’s finish him of 9:11 broke the previous record of 9:15 set by Kyle Cooke in 2008. Both men were Holy Trinity runners and state champions.continues on page 9

As part of the post-race festivities and awards ceremony, the huge crowd of runners and walkers sang “Happy Birthday” to Butler and then stood in line for a piece of the huge

monkey adorned birthday cake. “It was very overwhelming,” said Butler of the running community’s response to his birthday. “Great group of people who I am honored to be friends with. That’s what life is about – not how many trophies you win or how fast you are, but the relationships you build.” In the women’s race, Melbourne Beaches Angela Cobb made it four for four, taking the top spot in 10:49. Melbourne’s Beth Whalen, who has steadily been closing the pace gap on Cobb, placed second in 10:51 and Whalen’s training partner, Palm Bay’s Kim Hunger earned third place in 11:21. The Brevard Zoo’s Monkey Madness 3K was number five in the seven-race 2012-13 Running Zone Foundation Race Series. Those who have been fleet of feet this season in at least four of the Series events are eligible to share in a piece of the prize pie worth $10,000. Currently, Melbourne’s Peter Clusener – the 2010-11 Series champ - is leading the overall men’s race and Cobb, last year’s overall female victor, is setting herself up for a second title. Coming up next in the Series is the Pirate Plunder 2 Miler that kicks off at 6:30 p.m. from Meg O’Malley’s. Check out all

the race information and special amenities offered at http://www.runningzone.com/series/news/1612

Coach Doug Butler will always remember his 50th birthday that fell on Brevard Zoo’s Mon-key Madness 3K race day on March 2. Race organizers printed “Happy 50th Birthday Coach Butler” on the back of the race shirts and then presented him with a Monkey birth-day cake at the post-race party and awards ceremony. Butler won his new age group and finished 15th overall in the field of more than 1,000 participants.

Melbourne’s Michelle stanton is all smiles after winning the grand Monkey Madness 3K give-a-way that included two 1-day tickets to Walt Disney World and one hotel night stay for two!

Running is probably the most natural ac-tivity in humans. Shortly after a child begins to walk, he begins to run. Toddlers don’t walk anywhere, they run! Perhaps those of us adults who run are actually trying to connect with our inner children? Enough psycho-babble! The real purpose of this article is to review some of the current recommendations regarding children’s sports, particularly running. According to statistics from the Ameri-can Academy of Pediatrics, some 30 million children in this country are involved in sports. Of these, 3-11%, or 3.5 million children, will suffer some type of sports injury in a given year. Although 50% of these injuries are clas-sified as “traumatic” injuries, the other 50% are considered to be “overuse” injuries. Most running injuries are of this type. These injuries result from a series of cumulative micro-trau-mas, rather than a single major trauma, that cause damage to bones, tendons, or muscles. There has been much recent controversy regarding levels of children’s participation in sports from the standpoint of injury risk. Injury rates are increasing as more and more children participate in sports and do so at increasingly competitive levels. Fortunately, running seems to be one of the safest sports.

The top seven sports for childhood injuries are, in order of descending injury frequency, basketball, football, baseball, soccer, hockey, gymnastics, and volleyball. These statistics, from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, are encouraging for the parents of runners due to running’s relative low rate of injuries. The level of a child’s participation in sports is best determined by his “physical “age rather than his “chronologic” age. Physical aging of a child is classified by the Tanner Body Index. This index is based on physical development as it relates to changes of pu-berty. There are four Stages: I (prepubescent); II (early pubescent); III (mid-pubescent); and IV (post-pubescent). Running is highly recommended for children in Stages I and II (roughly under age 11). It poses little risk for musculoskeletal injuries at this age, and it can help to develop cardiovascular fitness. Indeed, these are the ages when running should be strongly encour-aged, as 37% of children in this age group are obese and only 25%of children in this group get adequate daily exercise. A love of running that begins in early childhood can lead to a lifetime dedication to fitness.

When a child enters Stage III (12 - 15 years in males and 10-13 in females), injuries related to growth spurts begin to appear. During growth spurts, long bones grow asymmetri-cally, causing imbalances of muscles and tendons. These muscles and tendons become functionally “shortened” until they accommo-date to bone growth. Joint motion becomes restricted, and pain in muscles, joints, and tendons can occur. Three conditions that are often seen in this age group are calcaneal apophysitis, Achilles tendinitis, and pronation syndrome. Calcaneal apophysitis is an irrita-tion of the secondary growth area (apophysis) of the calcaneus, or heel bone. It is character-ized by pain on the sides and back of the heel. It generally responds to a short course of rest. Achilles tendinitis is characterized by pain in the Achilles tendon, aggravated by activ-ity. It is managed with stretching, rest, and sometimes with physical therapy. Pronation syndrome in the young runner is characterized by a flattening of the arch with weight bearing. Although this condition is usually hereditary in etiology, it often does not become painful until early pre-teen years. This condition is usually treated with orthotic therapy. Running is certainly safe in Stage III children, but prop-er stretching and proper shoes are essential for the prevention of injuries. Stage IV children are prepubescent, and their running injuries are more typical of adult injury patterns. At this age, many children are

involved in competitive running. Stress fractures, tendinitis, and shin splints are the most common injuries seen in this age group. Injury prevention in Stage IV children involves the same factors as with adults: proper stretching, proper shoes, and sensible training techniques regarding increases in distance and speed. Although youth sports have many benefits, including fitness, learning teamwork, goal setting, etc., the primary reason for a child to participate in a sport is to have fun. Running can be a very fun activity for children, and can be a sport that they can continue for a lifetime. Encourage your children to run!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in the on-line Making a Differ-ence Day contest! Last month we shared how Melbourne Central Catholic and St. Joseph Catholic School had put together a 5K and post-race dinner to raise money for former physical education teacher and cross-country coach, Jason Whitworth, who had been stricken by ALS, a degenerative and fatal disease. (the story can be found on page 10 at http://issuu.com/runningzonefoundation/docs/0313rznl_r2) The project was one of five finalists eligible to win $10,000 for their charity of choice and the Whitworths hoped that a vic-tory could help provide a voice in the fight against the degenerative disease. “We really want to raise awareness about ALS,” said Whitworth’s wife, Gayle, last month. “I had a grandmother and aunt who had breast cancer. There are so many organizations to help and I support that. But no one knows about ALS or how it affects the whole family. We’d want the money directed toward research. Diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s have lots of drugs to fight them but ALS only have one that that only extends life two or three months.” Thanks to an outpouring of concern and

people being will to vote, USA Weekend and the Gannett Foundation will now be donat-ing $10,000 to the ALS Association Florida Chapter in Tampa to support research. According to Florida Today the Brevard Catholic schools garnered more online votes than the four other USA Weekend contest nominees during the 10 day voting stretch. The magazine will feature the winner in their April 12-13 edition. USA Weekend is in-cluded in Sunday editions of the paper.

Thank You for making a Differenceby Patti Sponsler

Gayle and Jason Whitworth were over-joyed to learn that the Jason’s Run 5K project won the USA Weekend Make A Difference Day All-Start Award. $10,000 will be donated to the ALs Association Florida Chapter for medical research.

Despite their apparent leanness, too many active people are discontent with their body fat. All too often, I hear seemingly lean athletes express extreme frustration with their inability to lose undesired bumps and bulges:Am I the only runner who has ever gained weight when training for a marathon???Why does my husband lose weight when he starts going to the gym and I don't?For all the exercise I do, I should be pencil-thin. Why can't I simply lose a few pounds?Clearly, weight loss is not simple and often includes debunking a few myths. Perhaps this article will offer some insights that will lead to success with your weight loss efforts.

myth: You must exercise in order to lose body fat. To lose body fat, you must create a calo-rie deficit. You can create that deficit by1) exercising, which improves your overall health and fitness, or2) eating fewer calories. Even injured athletes can lose fat, despite a lack of exercise. The complaint “I gained weight when I was injured because I couldn't exercise” could more correctly be stated “I gained weight because I mindlessly overate for comfort and fun.” Adding on exercise does not equate to losing body fat. In a 16-week study, untrained women (ages 18 to 34) built up to 40 minutes

of hard cardio or weight lifting three days a week. They were told to not change their diet, and they saw no changes in body fatness. Creating a calorie deficit by eating less food seems to be more effective than simply adding on exercise to try to lose weight. Athletes who complain they “eat like a bird” but fail to lose body fat may simply be under-reporting their food intake. A survey of female marathoners indicated the fatter runners under-reported their food intake more than the leaner ones. Were they oblivious to how much they actually consumed? Or were they too sedentary in the non-exercise hours of their day?

myth: If you train for a marathon or triathlon, surely your body fat will melt away.Wishful thinking. If you are an endurance ath-lete who complains, “For all the exercise I do, I should be pencil-thin,” take a look at your 24-hour energy expenditure. Do you put most of your energy into exercising, but then tend to be quite sedentary the rest of the day as you recover from your tough workouts? Male endurance athletes who reported a seemingly low calorie intake did less spontaneous activ-ity than their peers in the non-exercise parts of their day. You need to keep taking the stairs instead of the elevators, no matter how much you train. Again, you should eat according to

your whole day's activity level, not according to how hard you trained that day.

myth: The more you exercise, the more fat you will lose. Often, the more you exercise, the hun-grier you get and 1) the more you will eat, or 2) the more you believe you “deserve” to eat for having survived the killer workout. Unfor-tunately, rewarding yourself with a 600-calo-rie cinnamon roll can quickly erase in a few minutes the 600-calorie deficit you generated during your workout. The effects of exercise on weight loss are complex and unclear—and depend on the 24-hour picture. We know among people (ages 56-78) who participated in a vigorous walking program, their daily energy needs remained about the same despite adding an hour of exercise. How could that be? The participants napped more and were 62% less active the rest of their day. Be sure to pay attention to your whole day's activity level. One hour of exercise does not compensate for a sedentary lifestyle

myth: You should exercise six days a week to lose weight. Research suggests exercising four times a week might be better for weight control than six times a week. A study with sedentary women (ages 60 to 74) who built up to exer-cising for 40 minutes of cardio and weights suggests those who did four workouts a week burned about 225 additional calories in the other parts of their day because they felt ener-gized. The group that trained six times a week complained the workouts not only took up too much time, but also left them feeling tired and droopy. They burned about 200 fewer calories in the non-exercise parts of their day. Yes, they were ages 60 to 74, but the info might also relate to you?

myth: Couples who exercise together, lose fat together. Not always. In a 16-month study looking at exercise for weight loss, the men lost 11.5 pounds and the women maintained weight,

Why Can’t I simply lose a Few pounds? Dieting myths and Gender Differencesby Nancy Clark, MS, RD

even though they did the same amount of exercise. In another study, men who did an

18-month marathon training program reported eating about 500 more calories per day and lost about five pounds of fat. The women reported eating only 60 more calories, despite having added on 50 miles per week of run-ning. They lost only two pounds. What's going on here? Well, a husband who adds on exercise will lose more weight than his wife if he's heftier and thereby burns more calories during the same workout. But, speaking in terms of evolution, Nature seems protective of women's role as child bearer, and wants women to maintain adequate body fat for nourishing healthy babies. Hence, women are more energy efficient. Obesity researchers at NY's Columbia University sug-gest a pound of weight loss in men equates to a deficit of about 2,500 calories, while women need a 3,500-calorie deficit. No wonder women have a tougher time losing weight then do men....

The bottom line If you are exercising to lose weight, I en-courage you to separate exercise and weight.

Yes, you should exercise for health, fitness, stress relief, and most importantly, for enjoy-ment. (After all, the E in exercise stands for enjoyment!) If you exercise primarily to burn off calories, exercise will become punishment for having excess body fat. You'll eventually quit exercising—and that’s a bad idea. Instead of focusing on exercise as the key to fat loss, pay more attention to your calorie intake. Knocking off just 100 calories a day from your evening snacks can theoreti-cally result in 10 pounds a year of fat loss. One less cookie a day seems simpler than hours of sweating...? Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD (Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics) counsels casual and competitive athletes in her private prac-tice in the Boston-area (617-795-1875). Her Sports Nutrition Guidebook, Food Guide for Marathoners and Cyclist's Food Guide all offer additional weight management information. The books are available via www.nancyclarkrd.com. No wonder it seems harder for women to lose weight then men. Obesity researchers at NY's Co-lumbia University suggest a pound of weight loss in men equates to a deficit of about 2,500 calo-ries, while women need a 3,500-calorie deficit.

March really does come in like a lion when it comes to Florida racing. With sometimes multiple race choices each weekend, many runners and walkers are hitting some of their fastest race times. And several multisport race directors have already dusted off their swim buoys and set the courses for early-season racing. While it is easy for everyone to keep up with local race results through the Running Zone’s and Space Coast Runners websites, we want to use Beyond Brevard’s Borders to recognize the accomplishments of our locals at out-of-town events and also hope, that by reading about your fellow athlete’s accom-plishments, you’ll find encouragement to play longer and/or harder. mar. 3: orange Blossom Half-mara-thon, Tavares, Fl

Kimberly Prosser is showing plenty of symp-toms from the running bug that she said bit her. Less than 18 months ago, the 45-year-old Brevard County Emergency Management Director crossed the finish line of her first 5K in 43:29. By Jan. 2013 she had whittled her time south to a 25:01 PR. After dropping her half-marathon time from 2:16:07 in Oct. 2012 to 2:03:47 in Jan., she was hoping to get closer to the two-hour mark at the Orange Blossom Half-Marathon in Tavares on Mar. 3. “Harry (Prosser’s husband) had run the course last year,” she said. “It was a fast course; flat and along a lake – kind of like River Road.”

Wearing hand warmers in her gloves dur-ing the frosty, windy miles, Prosser did drop her time to 2:03:09 – a personal best but still slower than expected. “We thought the course was a little long,” she said. “We all had at least 13.4 on our Garmins. Our goal was to break two this year – it would have been close.” Two days after the event, race manage-ment apologized on Facebook and admitted the course had indeed been long due to a miscommunication on where a turn-around sign was to be located. Prosser took it all in stride, however. “I’ll just keep working on it and hope to break two at Minneola,” she said referring to the Lake Minneola half-marathon and 12K on April 20 in Clermont.” Congrats to all our local Orange Blos-som Half-Marathon finishers including: Ben Buchanan, 40, Melbourne, 3rd 40-44, 1:38:57; Christine Hetzel, 32, Cocoa, 2:29:41; Bruce Klima, 33, Viera, 2:04:48; Robin Mill-er, 33, Melbourne Beach, 2nd OA, 1:35:44; Harry Prosser, 44, Rockledge, 1:43:19; Kim-berly Prosser, 45, Rockledge, 3rd 45-49, PR, 2:03:09; Nancy Wingo, 59, Rockledge, 1st 55-59, 2:03:28.

mar 3: long play Trail races Withla-coochee state Forest, Nobleton, Fl

The 33 1/3 Long Play Trail Race may seem like an odd name unless you’re old enough to remember vinyl records or associate the race’s name with its calendar date of 3.3.13.

Rockledge’s Kim Prosser took third in the 45-49 age group and ran a personal best of 2:03:09 at the chilly Orange Blossom Half-Marathon on Mar. 3 in Tavares.

Withlacoochee state Forest in Nobleton offered a frosty morning and smoldering logs to those participating in the Long Play 33.3-miler or Half Marathon trail races on Mar. 3. The chilly runs of various distances through the Withlacoochee State Forest attracted about a dozen locals who have always known or are just discovering the joys of running off-road. “Trails are different,” said Merritt Is-land’s Nancy Buonanni who signed on for the 33.3-mile event-her longest to date. “You can walk a little bit; there isn’t as much pressure and you can enjoy the scenery. I am hooked.” Buonanni joked that the Long Play race was “Mother Nature’s Warrior Dash” as runners had to jump over smoking logs in a portion of woods where a controlled burn was still smoldering. While most road races have volunteers telling you where to turn, athletes on the Withlacoochee course had to look for orange tags in the trees to keep them on course and most ended up running a loop short or a loop long. Buonanni, Merritt Island’s cross-country coach and Brevard County Coach of the Year, was one of several who went the extra few miles. “I found out my Garmin battery only lasts six hours,” she laughed. “I finished 36 miles in 6:53 so those last 53 minutes were hard.” Congratulations to all of Brevard’s off-road warriors including33.3 miles +/-: Cyndi Bergs, 42, Merritt Island, 1st 40-44, 6:01:49; Nancy Buonanni, Merritt Island, 2nd 50-54, 6:53:57; Linda Cowart, Cocoa, 1st 50-54, 6:01:49; Matt Mahoney, Melbourne, 3rd 55-59, 6:51:14; Jim Schroeder, Melbourne Beach, 1st 65-69, 7:59:13; Christy Tagye, Cocoa, 2nd 40-44, 6:02:04; Half-Marathon: Bill Buonanni, 52,

march 9: Gate river run 15K, Jacksonville, Fl

There are a host of reasons why the iconic Gate River Run is the largest 15K in the Unit-ed States. Of this year’s 17,000+ finishers, 134 drove north from Brevard including our fastest race couple Andy Dutra: PR 59:48 and his lovely wife, Tracy ‘T-Siz’ Dutra, who took second in the 40-44 age group in 1:01:21. Here are some of the reasons we love this race:• USA 15K Championship – rub elbows with some of the country’s best runners. Past win-ners include Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit, Arturo Barrios, Grete Waitz, Ed Eyestone, Lynn Jennings, Todd Williams, Deena Drossin Kas-

tor, Meb Keflezighi, Colleen DeReuck, Ryan Shay and Jennifer Rhines.*Equalizer bonus: elite women receive a 6:35 head start on the elite men. Whoever hits the tape first wins an additional bonus. Flagstaff’s Janet Cherobon-Bawcom again crossed the line first (49:44) this year, earning $5K in ad-dition to the $12K for top female ($80K total prize money this year). Hanover’s Ben True unseated three-peat champ, Mo Trafeh, with his 43:38 win, to take home $12,000. • Corral starts: Top 5,000 are seeded based on qualifying times from other races 5K to mara-thon. Those in the corrals enjoy their own port-a-potties; bag check and water station while waiting for the 8:30 a.m. start.• Streakers: Race management takes care of the few who have now run each of the 36 Gate River Runs. Melbourne’s own Gary Castner is one of them!• Top ten awards: finish in the top ten percent of the field and receive something special

Bib numbers 1 through 300 were reserved for elite athletes at the Mar. 9 Gate River Run 15K in Jacksonville. Apparently, with bib #142, Doug Nichols wasn’t elite enough to use the super elite port-a-potties. The Melbourne runner fessed up to sneaking in anyway.

at the finish line. For the past few years, the awards have been running caps embroidered with the ‘top ten finisher’ logo.• Undeniably cool race shirts and finishers’ medals.• Incredible course support: Closed roads; 12 live bands; plentiful aid stations and port-o-lets plus incredible spectator sport.• Mile 2: Main Street Bridge: With the crowds still thick, you barely realize you’re climbing.• Mile 4: San Marco’s picturesque streets: Their residents are out in droves offering high fives; bratwurst; beer; mimosas and orange slices.• Mile 6: The St. Nicholas area: added later in the event’s history, takes you off Atlantic Blvd. and the residents along the way are starting to get in step with their San Marco neighbors to offer a good time to the athletes.• Mile 8: The drum beats at the base of the infamous “Green Monster” bridge: Runners climb 186 feet in about one-half mile. Stereo speakers line the bridge to help rock the ath-letes along. Best place to take in the view of the Jacksonville skyline!• Mile 9: Almost there: the pace clock rolls your time on the down ramp to Duval Street and the Stadium finish line. Don’t for get to smile for the JumboTron.• Post-race party: Free beer. Enough said. Ok, also kids’ runs, expo is still open, live band, awesome people watching…Congrats to all of our local Gate River Run 15K finishers including: Julie Abner, 35,

march 9, Dances with Dirt Green swamp, Dade City, Fl

The Shagalicious Go Gos were a vision of loveliness amongst the field of dirty, sweaty athletes competing in the March 9 Dances with Dirt 50-mile trail relay. “Autumn (Evans) has been trying to bring the (Green Swamp) theme level up to that of Dances with Dirt in Hell (Michigan) where everyone participates in a theme,” said Barbara Krause about the decision to go all out on this year on their costume coordina-tion. “We realized that sexy women were

winning the theme award every time so we knew with a hetero male judge we would have to exploit ourselves. I am a huge fan of Austin Powers and we thought ‘what hetero man can’t appreciate go go girls’?” The team of five – which also included Julie Hannah, Jennifer Ogburn and Lisa Petrillo – worked hard to find the grooviest 60’s outfits. Kathy Bills helped them compose a routine they could perform along the course to the 60s play list they built to play on a wireless stereo speaker. “The outfits were amazingly easy to run in,” said Krause. “They were made with real cheap fabric so they were light and inexpensive.” As no gaggle of go go girls would be complete without a man of mystery by their side, the ladies also carried a life-size card-board replica of Austin Powers. “We had to be totally committed to play-ing it out on the course,” Krause said. “People were asking for photos to be taken with us and we were getting people to dance with us.” And true to their prediction, the hetero male judges showed their appreciation for the

Shagalicous Go Gos by awarding them top spot in the team theme results and free entry to next year’s race. Congratulations to all our local Dances with Dirt athletes including:

march 17: sarasota Half-marathon, sarasota While training for the Ironman Texas 70.3 coming up on April 7, Melbourne’s Brad Daszynski wanted to throw in something a little different and the idea of running the Sarasota half-marathon relay offered a wel-come respite. “Running a half-marathon relay is a nice change from the norm,” said the DRS Tactical Systems Software Engineer. “It’s fun, not too stressful and the presence of a teammate adds that camaraderie factor. You get to cheer each other on and cross the finish line together.” Daszynski had teamed up with Sarasota’s Emily Hall under the moniker ‘Hehe-You Said Fartlek’ against several of their Sarasota buddies. “It was fun to meet up with them, banter about what paced we’d be able to hold on our respective legs and have some ‘friendly’ competition,” he said. "Good running form is the single most important thing I have learned in 30 years at Playmakers. I question why it took us so long to learn it."

Curt MunsonOwner of Playmakers, Okemos, MI

"Our stores have been teaching Good Form Running since February. The feedback and testimonials have been overwhelming. We have customers relating how they are running further and faster, and most importantly many have had incredible breakthroughs overcoming pain."

Chris Lampen-CrowellOwner Gazelle Sports, Grand Rapids, MI

"I couldn't believe what a difference GFR made for me. I couldn't run 2 miles without knee pain- one week before a scheduled marathon. After GFR, I was able to run the San Antonio Rock n' Roll Marathon. That's when I knew we had to bring this to our customers and friends."
