You’re lying in bed at 6:00 a.m. and not quite sure you have the energy to get up and exercise. But you’re training partner won’t have someone to run or walk with if you’re not there. So you roll out of bed and then proceed to have one of the best morning exercise rou-tines you’ve ever had. And even if it’s not a great workout, you have someone to keep you company and to chat with along the way.

Having someone to talk with, some-one to hold you accountable and vice versa, are just some of the benefits of having a training partner. Running Zone has a several ways to help you find a training partner:

By joining the Gecko Club you have secure access to the Zippy Geck face-book. page. You can find other Gecko Club members who may need a train-ing partner.

By coming out to our fun run/walks. Running Zone Foundation has 3 fun

runs and walks per week and soon to add a 4th. There is always a chance to meet someone new who goes your same pace!

By signing up for a training camp. There are many great camps with know-ledgeable coaches in our area. Set Goals Not Limits, Space Coast Half Marathon Training Camp, Your Best Tri, Beach-side Tri Sport, Coach Bernie, Team In Training, etc. Signing up enables you to try something new and step out of your box and meet new people with similar goals.

Kyle Cooke’s sixteen minute and 33 second victory at the August 13 I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K was a “rust-buster” for the for-mer Holy Trinity cross country state champion. “I haven’t raced since April so I was rusty,” said Cooke, who runs for Columbia University where he is majoring in Political Science and Economics. “I finished summer school on Thursday and came home yesterday. I wasn’t happy with my time but given the extra ten degrees in temperature here, it was fine.” Cooke was glad for the chance to blow some cobwebs off his legs, as he’ll be returning to New York and ramping up his mileage for Columbia’s upcoming cross-country season. “One of the goals is to win back the Ivy League championship,” said Cooke, who was part of the 2009 team that snatched the victory from Princeton by one point. “We won it in my sophomore year and it would be nice to get it back during my senior year.” With Cooke camped out in New York and Firecracker 5K winner, James Post attending the University of North Florida, the field is still wide open for the overall win in the Running Zone Foundation Race Series and a chunk of the $10,000 prize purse. And that bodes well for second place Pizza 5K finisher, Michael Fisher, who zipped across the line five seconds behind Cooke in 16:38. The 19-year-old West Melbourne resident, who placed third overall at the Firecracker 5K, is now leading the men’s side of the Series with a total of 170 points. Things could be a bit tighter for the top Series spot in the ladies Series race. Indialantic’s Angela Cobb, who

placed second to Jessica Crate at the Firecracker 5K, turned the tables on the Satellite Beach elite athlete when she nailed the Pizza victory in 17:49; fifteen seconds ahead of her “twice a week” training partner. “I thought we were together until the half-way point,” said Cobb, who is coming back to racing after giving birth to her daughter, Savan-nah, eighteen months ago. “At the half-way point Jessica surged a little and then I caught up. After that she fell back a bit. I don’t think she was feeling too good.” Cobb credited Crate with the goal she had set going into the race. “She thought I should shoot for a sub-17:50,” said Cobb, who had run a 17:52 at the Firecracker 5K and whose personal best 5K is 17:24. “I did it and, hopefully, my times will keep coming down to get

me back to where I was.” The two women, who are close in age – Crate is 26; Cobb, 28 – and athletic aptitude, are now tied in the Series with 100 points each. Although no overall time records were set this year, the race itself regis-tered a whopping 1,055 walkers and runners, many taking their first shot at the 3.1-mile distance that started and finished at The Avenue of Viera. After being cheered in by family, friends and pint-sized cheerleaders, participants were then free to indulge in a slice or more of the 300-plus pizzas freshly baked by Chris Coneen and his crew at Pizza Gallery and Grill. The restaurant’s beautiful court-yard served as the staging area for the awards and pizza brunch that also muffins, pastries, and fresh fruits. Palm Bay’s Kim Blake earned more than a huge sense of accom-plishment, a tasty post-race feast and the proudly worn race shirt after finishing her first 5K. The 47-year-old Harris fitness camp participant was the winner in the random drawing that included two NFL tickets to any Florida game and a night’s hotel stay. “My boyfriend and I are going to see the Jaguars and the Colts in Jack-sonville on New Year’s Day,” said Blake, who grew up in Baltimore and has been a lifelong Colts fan. “ I grew up watching the Colts.” With a great first taste of racing, Blake will be back to future Running Zone Foundation Series events. “I came and I survived,” she laughed. “It was a nice first experi-ence and there were lots of friendly people there. I’m sad to say that I have a previous commitment and won’t be able to do the next race but I’m looking forward to doing the other events after that.” Complete I Run for Pizza Foot-ball Kickoff 5K results are available at http://www.runningzone.com/

When Jessica Crate was uncharacter-istically beaten in the women’s race at the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K on August 13, people naturally wanted to know more about Angela Cobb, the Indialantic athlete who beat her. While it may have seemed like Cobb was new on the scene, the 28-year-old Georgia native actually moved to Brevard more than three years ago. “I had picked up surfing in college and had then wanted to move here,” she reflected in a soft southern drawl. “A friend said he could get me a job here so I packed up and drove down.” Before ever being enticed by the ocean, however, Cobb had fallen in love with running at an early age. “I wasn’t home-schooled but I went to a church-group school,” she said. “There were no athletics so I started running because my mom ran. We lived in the country so there was really nothing else to do.” Traveling south to Jacksonville with her mom to race the Gate River Run 15K each spring, Cobb began to envision crossing her first marathon finish line. At the tender age of 17, Cobb ran the now defunct 2001 Gulf Beaches Marathon in Clearwater with a winning age group time of 3:47:41. “Running sort of came natural to me without a lot of training so I started to do more road racing,” she said. “My mom emailed some of the college coaches with

my times and I had some scholarship offers. I started at Valdosta State and finished my last year-and-a-half at Valdosta state. They had an excellent running program.” Although waves and work stole most of her time after moving to Indialantic, Cobb became familiar with the local roads by run-ning them and participating in - and often winning - a sporadic race. With the birth of her daughter, Savan-nah, in March 2010, Cobb began to spend more time on the roads than in the water. “Running is something I can do with her,” said Cobb. “And running with her in the stroller is making me stronger.” By February of this year, Cobb was fast enough to take second overall in the Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon in 1:20:49, beating Crate by almost two minutes. Cobb’s commitment to racing began again in earnest when she signed up for all seven of the Running Zone Race Series events, placing second to Crate in the July 4 Firecracker 5K and then beating her at the Pizza Run. Cobb is hoping to whittle her 5K time back down near her personal best of 17:24. “I have to thank Long Doggers,” she said of the Indialantic establishment where she works. “They have been helping me out and allowing me the flexibility and time to be with my daughter and train during the day while my boyfriend, her father, works.”

The spelling of her first name is as unique as she is. Kathrine Switzer– that’s Kathrine without an “e” in the middle – will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker at this year’s Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon festivi-ties on Nov. 26-27 in Cocoa Village. It seems fitting that the women who busted down road racing’s gender barriers would be on hand to help the event celebrate its fortieth birthday. After all, it was K. Switzer – wearing bib #261 – who was attacked during the 1967 Boston Marathon by race director, Jock Semple, for dar-ing to run the distance supposedly too daunting for the fairer sex. Nearby male runners who came to Swtizer’s aid allowed the then 20-year-old Syracuse University junior to break away from Semple

and run on to become the first official female finisher on the famed course. And that might have been the end of it had a photographer on the media truck not caught the scuffle on film. The photo of the incident flashed around the globe to become one of

Time-Life’s “100 Photographs that Changed the World.”’ Switzer then went on to run an-other 38 marathons and, after winning the 1974 New York City Marathon,

Many of us have areas of our lives that we wish we could change. Often, however, we feel overwhelmed by the effort it would take to make the changes and choose, instead, to sit in our so-called comfort zone. It really isn’t comfortable, though, because there is that inner whisper continu-ally reminding us that we do have the ability to make changes if only we commit to put in the effort. Running Zone Racing Team member Andy Dutra lived more than two decades of his life as the ‘big kid’. Enduring cruel taunting through school and, in early adulthood, being unable to do something as simple as climb a flight of stairs without panting uncomfortably, Dutra began making a series of small changes that opened the doors to an incredible new life. If you were to meet the confident, caring, funny and fit Ph.D candidate today, you’d be hard-pressed to guess that Dutra’s life had ever been less than anything successful. We hope that his candidness in this interview will provide hope, motivation and encouragement to all of us working to overcome personal challenges.

What inspired you to begin the jour-ney to fitness? When I was a sophomore at the University of Maine, I had a sec-ond floor dorm room. At this time, I topped out the scale at close to 240 – maybe even 250 - pounds and physical activity was at the back of my mind. I was always the big kid growing up, and taunting was

a common occurrence. In order to deal with this, I would eat. It was a battle everyday to walk up a single flight of stairs without being winded and sweaty. One day I decided that I’d had enough, and decided to make a life change. It took about another year of frustration and pitfalls before I finally found a plan and stuck to it. Running became my new addiction. It started with only a quarter-mile a day, but evolved into a mile, and then continued from there.

How did you go about changing things for yourself? I tried every fad diet out there at first, but soon realized that it just wasn’t enough; nor are ANY of them healthy or effective for the long-term. I had always gone to the gym, but was never serious about what I was doing. I soon gradually adapted a solely plant-based, whole food diet, and began to workout and run on a regular basis. It was very difficult at first, but then it became second na-ture. It was all baby steps – that is the secret to make any lifestyle change permanent. I knew that if I made any sudden alterations to my lifestyle, I would be less likely to adhere to my new goals. I look back at my life five years ago, and I can’t believe the things I used to eat and put into my body. Run-ning and a healthy lifestyle are now permanent components of who I am. It has been awesome to find someone special (Tracy SImso) who has ALL that same goals and lifestyle as I do. My active lifestyle and healthy eat-

ing became contagious, and both my parents have changed their entire lives to better incorporate healthier nutrition and daily physical activity.

What got you interested and started in running? I always thought that running was really cool (for lack of a better word). It really proves what the human body is able to accomplish. I bought a pair of running shoes and got started. Running became my new addiction. It started with only a quarter-mile a day, but evolved into a mile, and then continued from there. When I started running, I did it everyday. I soon learned that in order to improve I needed to start running smarter. After reading a number of books and

Andy Dutra and Tracy Simso cross the windy and wet Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half-Mara-thon finish line on Aug. 7, 2011. The couple finished in 1:32:48 with Tracy taking first in her age group. Inspired by the changes their son has made in his own life, Dutra’s parents, Marty and Linda Dutra, from Middletown, RI, also completed the event - their first distance of 13.1 miles.

led the charge that allowed the wom-en’s marathon to become part of the Olympic games in 1984. Thanks, in large part, to Switzer’s efforts, close to 50 percent of the par-ticipants lining up to begin the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon on Nov. 27 will be women - quite an increase from the lone female who graced the event’s inaugural starting line. “Forty years ago I said that one day, women’s running would become as popular and as publicizable as

men’s,” said Switzer who, at 64, still runs marathons. “That day has come, and it is profoundly exciting that it has happened in my lifetime.” If you’re a woman who loves to run or a man who loves a female runner, you’ll want to meet Switzer on Nov. 26 at Running Zone between 10 a.m. and noon or at the Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon Health and Fitness Expo at the Ken-nedy Space Center Visitor Complex that afternoon where she will also be signing and selling copies of her book

Marathon Woman. That evening Swit-zer will be the keynote speaker at the pre-race dinner at the Apollo/Saturn V Center. She will also be presenting awards on race day. In addition to being an integral part of marathon weekend, Switzer will also be posting comments and answering athletes’ questions each Friday on the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon Facebook page. Complete information and regis-tration about the event are available at www.spacecoastmarathon.com.

journals I began to understand the necessity of speed-work, long runs, recovery runs, hill workouts, repeats, etc. Trial and error became a new training component, as I was trying to determine what combination of work-out and types were most effective for me to achieve my goals. Running is now in my blood forever, and I cannot imagine a lifestyle without running. How/why did you get into racing? I have always been a competitive person, and racing seemed like a natu-ral transition for me. It was a nice transition from my weekly running routine. I always enjoy the social and

communal aspects that are associated with racing. I’ve never been one to race for the hardware - even though it is nice, but I see racing as internal challenge to be the very best version of you. The competitive component has helpful to push me to reach new milestones that I didn’t know were possible.

do you take your fitness for granted? I take nothing for granted. I have worked very hard to get where I am today, and I understand that it could be taken away in an instant. In this manner, I give everything I’ve got whenever I race or train. From not being able to conquer a flight of stairs, to now look forward to a multi-tude of fall marathons - both full and half-marathons. I am just grateful to be running and healthy.

How (if at all) has becoming fit changed your outlook on life and/or how you react towards others? There are two camps of people in this world, those who take the eleva-tor and those who take the stairs.

Growing up I was always taking the elevator - and the easy path in life - but now the stairs are much more appealing. I had learned that NOTH-ING is impossible, and those things in life that are truly worth it require a great deal of hard work and persever-ance. This sense of diligence and de-termination has spilled over into my everyday life. I have begun to pursue a Ph. D in Science Education, and always try to do the very best in what-ever I do. Every person faces hard-ships and pitfalls, but these obstacles are temporary and can only make us stronger. Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people is es-sential to having a healthy mental and physical lifestyle. Six years later, and close to 100 pounds lighter, I am an entirely new person and for the first time in 27 years I am finally beginning to feel comfortable in my own skin. My journey to fitness has compelled me to pursue a profession as a Personal

Trainer. Through this job, I am able to inspire people to reach their fit-ness goals and realize that anything is possible. I’ve had clients say that they will never be able to run a mile, let alone a 5K, but seeing them cross that finish line with a huge smile on their face is extremely rewarding. It makes all the hours of planning work-outs and time spent in the gym worth it!!! I am very understanding towards those people who are willing to try their best to live a healthy lifestyle, and try to encourage/motivate every-one to make small changes in their lives to better their future.

Current goals? I would like to finish a sub-18 minute 5K this season, and I am working very hard to achieve this goal. Also, I hope to finish a sub-1:28 half-marathon. As far as the mara-thon is concerned, I would like to fin-ish the Amica Newport Rhode Island without burning out near the end. In this future, Tracy and I are discussing the possibility of completing a half- or full Ironman.

What are your most memorable runs and/or races? My favorite thus far would be the 2010 Space Coast Half Marathon. It was my first half-marathon, and I love that course. Seeing Tracy at the finish line cheering me on was extremely en-couraging and rewarding. My finishing time was faster than I expected, and I just enjoyed the entire day! Even though my first marathon (Publix A1A Ft. Lauderdale Marathon) didn’t go exactly as planned, I enjoyed the race and looked forward to success-fully completing this distance. Tracy and I recently completed the wet and windy Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half- Marathon, and we were able to finish hand-in-hand which will always be a very special and memorable moment.

On being part of the running Zone racing team: Being asked to be on the Run-ning Zone Racing Team is one of my greatest honors. Being a non-athletic child, and always being picked last in gym class, an invitation to the RZ Racing Team was wicked awesome. I am very grateful to the entire Run-ning Zone family for inviting me to be a part of their racing team. They are an amazing group of runners and friends. The team aspect allows us to consistently encourage each other to do better as we strive to reach our goals. I am proud to wear the jersey at every race.

Other sports? I was always a surfer growing up in Newport, Rhode Island and contin-ue to surf whenever I get the chance and we have waves. I have recently begun to cycle and swim as part of triathlon training, and like the cross-training aspect that both sports offer.

What brought you down here from rI? I came to Melbourne, Florida from Newport, Rhode Island to begin the Science Education doctorate program at the Florida Institute of Technology. After completing both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Maine, I was ready for some warmer weather and water. Running in New England pres-ents its own slew of challenges, and I was definitely ready for a change.

undergrad in? I received a Bachelor of Sci-ence from the University of Maine at Machias in Marine Biology in 2006. I then attended the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, and procured a Masters of Science in Marine Biology.

Ph.d? I am presently attending the Flor-ida Institute of Technology here in

Melbourne, Florida working towards a Ph. D in Science education. I hope to focus my research on some compo-nent of fitness and achievement.

Occupation: I am presently a Personal Trainer, Facility Supervisor, and Group Fit-ness Instructor at the Clemente Center at the Florida Institute of Technology. Also, I am an Instructor at the Florida Institute of Technology teaching two sections of an introductory collegiate Survey of Science course. I enjoy both of these jobs and hope to be able continue with both for many years to come. Each is rewarding in its own manner.

On balancing work/school/family/home while staying fit: Balancing work/school/family/home is a tricky task, and involves early morning workouts. I have learn to become effective with me time management, and applied this both my scholastic and athletic life. Tracy has been very supportive and under-standing, and her motivation keeps me going.

Andy Dutra: Becoming Less and Morecontinued from page 14

As the fit and fast Andy Dutra crosses the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K finish line for third in the 25-29 age group, no one would ever guess that he was 100 pounds heavier in college and had difficulty walking up a flight of stairs.

Yes. GFR has had an incredibly positive response and success rate. We believe the reason for

that is the fact that GFR simply encourages you to move your body the way it was designed.

since i’m changing my technique, will my muscles be sore?

You will very likely experience some soreness. Chances are you have been under-working

some of the key running muscles. However if the soreness persists past a few runs, you need

to reassess your mechanics.

how long does it take to master Gfr?

Every individual is unique. If you run every day or if you are naturally in-tune with your body,

changes can come within a few days. For some it takes six months, even a year. “Mastering”

GFR requires practice, reassessment, and more practice.
