Steps Toward the Cross
“Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your hearts, with fasting, with weeping, and with sorrow; tear your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, very patient, full of faithful love, and ready to forgive. Who knows whether he will have a change of heart and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offer-ing and a drink offering for the LORD your God?”
Joel 2:12-14 CEB
As we approach the season of Lent and ultimately Easter, my prayer is we will take a serious journey; Steps Toward the Cross. Lent is not pri-marily a time to give up something but rather taking upon ourselves the intension and receptivity to God’s grace so that we may worthily partici-pate in the mystery of God-with-us.1 Below I have listed some disciplines and practices that if you choose, will bring you closer to the Cross and the God-in-us. May your journey be a sacred one.
1. Concerning my prayer life, each day I will commit to...2. Concerning Worship... Concerning Holy Week, I’ll commit to...3. Concerning Fasting, I’ll commit to...4. Concerning reading the Bible, I’ll commit to...5. Concerning confession...6. Concerning Holy Communion, I will try to be prepared to receive...7. Concerning bad habits, I’ll watch and change this Lent... 8. Concerning my health...9. Concerning my neighbor...10. One spiritual goal I want to commit to once Lent has passed is...
Prayer: Lord help me to be successful in this task I am about to under-take. May it be for the growth of my soul and the improvement of my spiritual life. Help me to keep all the commitments I have made. Amen.

March 19 The Pearl that Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi at Diane's 4850 Black Oak Trail
Afghan-American Nadia Hashimi’s literary debut novel is a searing tale of powerlessness, fate, and the freedom to control one’s own fate that combines the cultural flavor and emotional resonance of the works of Khaled Hosseini, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Lisa See. In Kabul, 2007, with a drug-ad-dicted father and no brothers,
Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age. As a son, she can attend school, go to the market, and chaperone her older sisters. But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusu-al custom. A century earlier, her great-great grandmother, Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life the same
way. Crisscrossing in time, The Pearl the Broke Its Shell interweaves the tales of these two women separated by a century who share similar des-tinies. But what will happen once Rahima is of marriageable age? Will Shekiba always live as a man? And if Rahima cannot adapt to life as a bride, how will she survive?

Who gets the donationsfrom the white baskets
on Communion Sunday? Thanks to continued congrega-tional support of donations to the white baskets, we are able to help many organizations in Rockford who serve the disadvantaged. One of these organizations is Rock House Kids, located in Rockford’s inner city. They serve at-risk chil-dren ages 6 to 18 who need a safe, warm, and nurturing environment. Their motto is: Help a child today and you won’t have to repair an adult tomorrow. Rock House Kids’ mission is to share God’s love with at risk chil-dren through biblical principals and spiritual and physical solutions. Thank you for your continued support. Local Missions Committee

Central to the Christian faith is a man who denies all our pre-conceived notions about what God should look like. Joining his movement will
mean coming to terms with the real Jesus, the rebel Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. The rebel Jesus came with a renegade gospel to start a revo-lution. You and I are invited to be a part. In Renegade Gospel, pastor and author Mike Slaughter presents Jesus and his challenging message to inspire us during Lent, Easter, and through the year. Read the red letters and discover Jesus all over again.

Health & Wellness Update From our Parish Nurse... Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health concern. One out of three Americans is at risk for developing kidney disease. CKD often goes undetected until it is very advanced. Very simple blood and urine tests can diagnosis CKD in early stages, and the progres-sion of CKD can be slowed or even stopped with proper treatment. Regular testing is important for everyone, but more so for individu-als at risk. The four main risk factors for kidney disease are: diabetes (self or family), high blood pressure (self or family), cardiovascular disease (self or family), and family history of kidney disease or diabetes or high blood pressure. Additional risk factors include: having the heritage of being African American, Na-tive American, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander, being obese, having a low birth weight, prolonged use of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen as painkillers, lupus, and other autoimmune disorders, chronic urinary tract infections, history of kidney stones, and being over the age of sixty. Listed are six functions that our kidneys perform: regulate the body’s fluid levels, filter wastes & toxins from the blood, release hor-mones that regulate blood pressure, activate vitamin D to help maintain healthy bones, release the hormone that directs the production of red blood cells, and help to keep blood minerals in balance (sodium, phos-
phorus, potassium). Most people with early chronic kidney disease have no symptoms, which is why regular testing is critical. Eight possible symptoms that one should pay attention to and report to their healthcare provider are: increased fatigue and weakness, difficult, painful uri-nation, pink or dark urine which can be a sign of blood in the urine, increased thirst, increased need to urinate (more so at night), puffy eyes, swollen face, hands, abdomen, ankles, or feet. There are four simple tests your healthcare provider will want to perform for preventative measures. First, monitor blood pressure. High blood pressure can damage small blood vessels called glomeruli in the kidneys. High blood pres-sure is the second-leading cause of kidney failure after diabetes. A reading below 130/80 is better if you have chronic kidney disease, and below 120/80 is best. Second, check for protein in urine. Traces of a type of protein, albumin, in urine (albuminuria) is an early sign of CKD. Persistent amounts of albumin and other proteins in the urine (proteinuria) indicate kidney damage. Third, have a blood (serum) creatinine level drawn. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine, which is a waste product from muscle activi-ty, out of the blood. When kidney function is reduced, creatinine levels will rise.
Fourth is the glomerular filtra-tion rate (GFR), which is the most sensitive and accurate gauge of kidney function. Blood creatinine levels are used in a calculation based on age, race, and gender. Levels less than sixty for three months indicate chronic kidney disease. Listed below are ways we can make changes to improve our health. Lower high blood pressure by carefully following the instruc-tions from your provider, reduce salt intake, and keep sugar levels under control by having a balanced diet. For example, studies have shown that drinking two or more colas a day, diet or regular, is linked to a higher risk of developing CKD. Drink alcohol only in moderation. Exercise regularly, stay hydrated by drinking water, quit smoking, avoid long term use of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen, monitor your cholesterol levels and follow your providers’ instructions for improved levels. Keep your health appointments and don’t forget to keep up with flu/pneumonia shots. Also, make sure your vaccinations are up to date along with your fami-ly medical history records. Last but not least, don’t forget to be your own advocate and remem-ber to ask your healthcare provider questions, especially if they are new to you and your medical history. Special attention should be paid to procedures that require contrast dyes or medical preparations.

Warm weather, longer days and things beginning to sprout in our yards means that spring is
just around the corner and the Garden Bazaar is coming. New annuals this year are Sun
Impatiens Rose, Grape -Lantana, Orange Geraniums and a hanging basket with red and white
Ivy Geraniums. Perennials include Bee Balm in 2 colors, Dianthus, and different colors of
Astilbe, Phlox, Echinacea and a dark blue in Clematis. Look for other surprises when you pick up
your preorders.
The profits from this year’s Garden Bazaar will go towards a new water heater (the old one is
leaking) the cost for replacement is between $10,000 to $15,000. (Sorry I don’t have an exact
cost, yet.)
There will be no supplemental funds from Thrivent this year because their supplemental
program ended September 30, 2016.
Please pass out the order forms to your friends and family members.
Thanks for all your help.
