DESCRIPTION

Stop (Red)This control is used to terminate any cycle. It is alsoused for scrolling through other functions.

Sterilizer Features

PrinterThis feature (available on some models) is athermal printer that record's each cycle'sperformance. See page 40 for more information.

Pressure MonitorThe pressure monitor indicates the pressure insidethe chamber. This monitor's readings can be foundon the display as each cycle is running.

Door SecurityWhile the chamber is under pressure, the door isheld securely closed with three separate lockingsystems. First, there is a locking handle that youmust tighten to hold the door fully closed. Thelocking handle turns clockwise to close andcounterclockwise to open. Second, there is apressure actuated locking pin which automaticallysecures the door, preventing it from beinginadvertently opened while there is pressure in thechamber. Finally, there is a backup catch which willprevent the door from opening fully even if there isa small amount of pressure in the chamber. Yourelease this catch with a lever which is located inthe lower left side of the door. To fully open thedoor, pull the door release lever toward you.

15

Door SwitchActuated by the door, the door switch preventsoperation of the sterilizer if the door is not fullyclosed.

Pressure Relief ValveThis valve protects the coded vessel frompressures exceeding the pressure rating of thevessel. The valve opens and releases steam in theevent that pressure in the vessel exceeds 45 PSIG(310 kPa). The pressure line is located in the backof the unit. An access hole is located in the backpanel to allow you to periodically check relief valveoperation.

Reservoir DrainA drain assembly is provided to empty thereservoir. The reservoir drain assembly and plugare located at the lower right of the chamberopening on the front of the sterilizer (as you facethe unit). The drain assembly attaches to the drainconnector so a hose can be attached for drainingthe sterilizer reservoir into a container.

Trays and Tray RackA rack for the inside of the sterilizer is provided tohold the instrument trays. The rack slides out of thechamber to allow periodic cleaning of the chamberand rack.

Three large trays and one small tray can beplaced into the rack or the rack can be used withonly one or two trays or no trays. Tall items can besterilized by removing both trays and placing theobjects on the bottom surface of the rack. Onelarge and one small tray are provided with the unit.See "Loading the Sterilizer Chamber" on page 31 ofthis manual.

Loading the Sterilizer Chamber

Loading Guidelines1. When processing wrapped goods, fabrics

and dressings, always place items in oneof the three upper positions in thechamber. Processing items in the bottomposition could possibly result in wet packsand unsterile goods.

2. Do not exceed the specified loads for acycle:Unwrapped Goods - no more than 14 lbsWrapped Goods - no more than 14 lbs inno more than 12 small cassettes or 4 largecassettesPacks - no more than 2.8 lbs and no morethan 14 towelsLiquids - flasks filled no more than 75%full.

3. Do not overload the sterilizer. Steampenetrates best with loosely packed loads.

4. Do not allow packs or wrappings to touchchamber walls or one another.

5. Leave adequate space between trays toallow steam circulation.

6. Do not stack trays on top of one another.

7. Use a process monitor in each load. Wealso recommend that you use a biologicalindicator at weekly intervals. An indicatorcontaining Bacillus stearothermophilus isthe proper indicator for steam sterilizers.

STERILIZATION PROCEDURES

WarningUse only self-venting,automatic sealing stopperswhen processing liquids ormedia. Use of otherstoppers or seals, or lack ofstoppers, will create thepossibility of burns or injuryfrom boiling liquids andexploding flasks.

If media is processed, bottles and tubes shouldcontain no more than 3/4 thetotal volume of thecontainer. When processingwater bottles and test tubes, the bottles and tubes shouldcontain no more than 3/4 thetotal volume of thecontainer. Chamber shouldbe cleaned daily whenprocessing media.

Sterilized liquids are fornon-clinical applications.

CautionPacks must be centered inthe chamber. Do not allowpacks to touch the sterilizerchamber's walls. Allowingpacks to touch the sterilizerchamber's walls may createan overheat condition.

32

Handling Sterilized Materials

Loads may be removed from the sterilizer at theend of the drying cycle. (Liquids may be removed atthe end of the sterilization cycle.) Unwrapped itemsshould be used immediately. Any unwrapped itemsnot used immediately cannot be considered sterileafter removal from the sterilizer chamber.

Date all wrapped packages and packs prior tostorage. Check the integrity of all wrappingmaterials prior to opening and using wrapped orpacked items; if the wrapping materials are openedor torn, the instruments must be consideredpotentially unsterile and should be re-sterilized priorto use. Re-sterilize all wrapped packages andpacks after one month in storage.

STERILIZATION PROCEDURES

WarningSterilizer and trays will behot after cycle is run. Alwayswear protective gloves andapron when removing aprocessed load. Protectivegloves and apron shouldalso be worn when reloadingsterilizer following previousoperation.

Open door slowly at the endof a liquid sterilization cycle.Do not allow hot bottles tobe jolted. This can causebottle explosions. Do notmove bottles if any boiling orbubbling is present.

Allow bottles to cool beforeattempting to move themfrom sterilizer shelf or tray(s)to the storage area.

Recommended Monitoring

All functions of a sterilizer should be monitoredto provide maximum assurance of properperformance.

Process Monitoring

For assurance that minimum sterilizingconditions have been achieved, werecommend the use of a process monitor witheach cycle and within each package. Thissmall process monitoring device will provideimmediate indication of exposure totemperature and of time in the presence ofhumidity (steam).

TraysPlace a process monitor in the center of eachwrapped or unwrapped tray of loose items.

Wrapped InstrumentsPlace a process monitor inside each packagewith an instrument.

Wrapped Packages of InstrumentsPlace a process monitor in each package.

34

Biological Indicators

Process monitors do not by themselves provesterilization has occurred. Biological indicatorscomposed of spores of standard organisms areconsidered the most reliable means of verifyingsterilization. A biological indicator functions bytesting the sterilizer's ability to kill test organisms ofa known high resistance. Indicators containingBacillus stearothermophilus should be used forsteam sterilizers. The Joint Commission onAccreditation of Hospitals recommends thatbiological indicators be used at least weekly tocheck the effectiveness of your steam sterilizer'ssterilization cycle.

When testing the effectiveness of a sterilizationcycle, use the appropriate "worst case" test loaddescribed for the cycle in this section:

Unwrapped InstrumentsPlace 100 instruments on a perforated tray linedwith a 100% cotton surgical towel. Place abiological indicator in the center of the test tray.Place the test tray in the center rack of the sterilizerchamber. Prepare additional trays in the samemanner without biological indicators to bring thetotal sterilization load to 14 lbs (6.4 kg).

Wrapped InstrumentsLoad a small cassette with 6 instruments. Place twobiological indicators inside the cassette. Wrap thecassette with two layers of appropriate wrapping.Seal with autoclave tape. Prepare eight other smallcassettes in the same manner without the biologicalindicators. Place the cassette with the biologicalmonitor upright in the center of a tray. Fill the traywith the rest of the cassettes. Place the tray in thecenter rack of the sterilizer chamber.

RECOMMENDED MONITORING

NoteWhen using a biologicalindicator for a 135°Ccycle, the user must besure that it has beenvalidated for use at135°C. We recommendusing theBarnstead|ThermolyneBiological Indicator (part# AY759X1) for this typeof cycle. If any otherBiological Indicator isused, the user mustensure that it has beenvalidated for a 135°Ccycle.

NoteRefer to themanufactuerer's recom-mendations for proper useof biological indicators.

During the cycle, the printer will print the elapsedtime, the current chamber temperature and thecurrent chamber pressure at one minute intervals, along with a status notation.

When the sterilizer chamber achieves thetemperature set by the cycle parameters, the printerwill immediately print a record line, regardless ofthe time since the last record was printed. Thestatus notation will change from "Heatup" to "Exp",indicating that the load is being exposed to thetemperature set forth in the cycle parameters. Theprinter will continue to print record lines at oneminute increments, starting one minute after therecord line printed at the start of the exposurephase but still showing the total elapsed time for thecycle.

When the sterilizer has achieved the timecondition set in the cycle parameters, the printer willprint "Vent" in the cycle status column, indicatingthat the sterilizer is venting.

At the end of the vent phase, the printer will print"Venting Cycle Completed" and instructions forstarting the drying cycle. There is no printout duringthe drying cycle.

Printer Record Storage

In addition to being heat-sensitive, the paper tape isalso light sensitive and will darken if left exposed tolight for an extended length of time. To ensure thelong-term legibility of your records, it isimportant that you keep your printed tapes in adry, cool, dark place.

Maintenance

Daily Maintenance

Cleaning Door GasketThe door gasket and the mating surface should bewiped clean each day with a clean, damp cloth. Donot use abrasive cleaners on the gasket or matingsurface.

The gasket should be examined for cracks anddamage that could result in a poor pressure seal. Ifreplacement is necessary, refer to GasketReplacement under the When Required heading ofthis Maintenance section.

Cleaning After Liquid LoadsBiological media tends to boil at a higher rate thanother liquids during venting. This causes media tobe spattered inside the chamber. Therefore, thechamber must be cleaned daily when you aresterilizing media. Clean as follows:

1. Allow unit to cool.

2. Wipe out chamber and door with a clean, damp cloth.

Weekly Maintenance(More often if necessary.)

Cleaning Chamber, Trays and RackAt least once a week, the trays and tray rack shouldbe removed from the sterilizer chamber. The trays, tray rack and chamber should be thoroughlycleaned to remove any deposits from the surfaces.

WarningRefer servicing to qualifiedpersonnel.

Never use a wire brush, steelwool, abrasive material, orchloride-containing productsto clean door and chamberassembly.

"Caution: Hot Surface. AvoidContact." Ensure that thesterilizer is cool beforecleaning to avoid burns.

CautionFailure to keep the interior ofthe stainless steel chamberfree of mineral deposits anddebris can cause prematurefailure of the sterilizer.

WarningTo prevent collection ofmineral deposits andcorrosion of chambercomponents, use distilled ordeionized water only asspecified. Clean chamberafter each use if sterilizingsaline solutions.

Page 50: Sterilemax Table Top Steam Sterilizer - Cole-Parmer · 2016-11-15 · This Barnstead Tabletop steam sterilizer has been designed for use in medical and dental offices, university

50

Clean the trays, rack and chamber (especially thebottom of the chamber) with appropriate anti-biological cleaners. Wipe all residue from thesurfaces with a dampened, lint-free cloth.

Monthly Maintenance

Pressure Relief Valve CheckTo ensure that the pressure relief valve isfunctioning properly, you must have a qualifiedperson check the valve each month.

The pressure relief valve is located on thepressure line in the back of the unit and is accessedthrough a round access hole in the back panel. Asuitable tool (screwdriver, rod, etc.) will be neededto test the pressure valve.

1. Run a sterilize cycle at 135°C (275°F)without a load in the chamber.

2. Allow the pressure in the chamber toreach 30 psi (206 kPa).

3. Insert a suitable tool through the accesshole and push the lever on the pressurerelief valve. Push the valve lever awayfrom the valve to open the valve. Hold thevalve open for 3 seconds. Steam shoulddischarge freely.

4. Release the valve lever. The steamdischarge should cease entirely.

5. After checking the valve, turn the sterilizeroff by pressing "Stop" to preventoverheating.

If the valve malfunctions, the valve must bereplaced.

MAINTENANCE

WarningPressurized steam will bedischarged when the reliefvalve is opened. To preventburns, place a steam barrier(such as a rolled towel)around the opening in theback of the unit. To preventburns, wear gloves or use anextension device if itbecomes necessary tooperate the pull ring.
